Any Piets in the Greenville/Spartanburg SC area?

I'll be in Greenville until Wed evening and would enjoy a visit while I'm in the
      area.....

On a somewhat related note...I'm scheduled to do some consulting in Illinois...just
south of Brodhead, across the state line...now why couldn't they schedule
that LAST WEEK!?!?!?! Sometimes life just ain't fair... :-)

      Dan,

I looked N8031 over and I think it's great. This is just my opinion,
but I think you should do a thorough preflight, maybe get a couple
more knowledgeable people to go over the plane too, and then go fly!
Life if really short, and the time that we have to fly is much, much
      shorter.

As to your list, I comment on the items below:

      >- replace exhaust pipes - they're soft steel and starting to rust

Everything in life is perpetually "starting to rust". Wait until
there's a hole, then patch it. Rinse, repeat. If they get really
knarly (like, in 10 years), maybe replace, but replace with mild
steel. In my limited experience, stainless cracks easier. I've had
two pipes depart the airplane (!), and they were professionally
      welded.

      >- re-rotate the tires. Tres rotated them on the hubs, then replaced the
      > bungees which brought the gear back in and they need to be rotated
      > back.

Sure, something to do on a rainy day.

      >- the finish has hairline cracks over the turtledeck stringers and there

      > long before I need to consider rejuvenating or recovering (I realize
      > that a punch test should really be performed...)?

Punch test should be done at the annual condition inspection
regardless of paint condition. Rejuvenator worked for me, can be
played around with next rainy day.

      >- I was able to put my finger between the spar and the fabric - is that
      > normal? Shouldn't the fabric be glued to the spar?

      It's not on mine.

      >- There are some bubbles on the leading edge and wrinkles above the ribs
      > on the trailing edge, near the center of the plane. Not sure what
      > these are signs of...

      Me either. Send us pix.

      >- The elevator should be rebuilt - it's pretty warped. Sounds like a
      > good winter job.

It just flew further than most Piets ever have. Maybe that warp
provides perfect rigging? :) Also, do you mean one or both of the
elevators, or do you mean the horizontal stabilizer? If it's the
stab, maybe the warp can be handled by adjusting the flying wires.

      >- The static port needs to be put somewhere on the side of the plane,
      > not at the top of the jury strut even with the bottom of the wing.

Static port? What's that? Try removing the port line into the
      altimeter, replacing with a plastic screw plug (hardware store item;
sorry, can't remember thread stats) that you've drilled a tiny hole
      in.

      >- Whoever built it really liked welding. The diagonal cabanes are
      > welded to the upright cabanes - there's no chance of just moving the

      > fittings are welded, too - no pivoting is allowed.

The cabanes welds are a potential positive safety feature - see
archives. The lift struts being welded seems strange. Please send pix.

      >- Gap seals on the ailerons, rudder, and elevators. This is a
      > no-brainer.

Yep. We're still running the same "translucent" duct tape we
installed three years ago. Another rainy day project. BTW, does the
rudder really need it? I don't know; what are other's experiences?

Plans call for a pretty fine gauge (don't have them in front of me)
hardwire, which is less strong and vibration resistant than 1/16th aircraft
cable. Anything larger than 1/16th is (in my humble opinion) overkill and
extra weight where you do NOT want it. Two cables per angle with a combined
breaking strength of over 1,000lbs has proven adequete on many flying Piets
to be more than adequete to keep that wooden tail structure together. They
are much stronger than the structure they are bracing.

      Shad,

I really enjoyed flying along with you. It always is exciting when flying with
others, especially those with Piets. I'm glad you were able to make a dash for
home when you needed to. That crazy weather kinda messed up plans, but that's
half the fun. We made it to Wakeman, OH and my wife and kids came and picked
us up. Getting up for work at 5:30 am Thursday after getting home at about
1:00 am was a little tough. Frank and I hitched a ride in a 172 to Wakeman,
OH yesterday to pick up our planes. The flight home was really great. We stopped
in to see Don Helmick in Valley City. What a treat to see him.

By the way, I'm really impressed with that Piet of you and your dad's. Not only
does it look fantastic, it really performs. How about on the leg to Plymouth,
IN when I was leading our group and after a while you just decided enough of
this slow flight and you pulled on ahead of me. Within a few minutes you were
out of sight! Quite a performer!

What a great trip! Thanks to all who added to it!!!

I recently bought 1/16 turnbuckles for the tail section but I noticed
at Brodhead that most (if not everyone) is using 3/32 - or at least that
is what it looked like. I can't recall who, but someone on here had
recommended 1/16 based on a previous archive search. Any comments on
1/16 vs. 3/32 - obviously the 3/32 is stronger but the 1/16 is rated at
around 700 lbs each - should be plenty strong.

        turnbuckles

I recently bought 1/16 turnbuckles for the tail section but I
noticed at Brodhead that most (if not everyone) is using 3/32 - or at lea
      st
that is what it looked like. I can't recall who=2C but someone on here h
      ad
recommended 1/16 based on a previous archive search. Any comments on
1/16 vs. 3/32 - obviously the 3/32 is stronger but the 1/16 is rated at a
      round
700 lbs each - should be plenty strong.

I didn't get the pleasure of meeting you at Brodhead but I just want to say

could share some info on how that was done.

Andrew; I believe Doc Mosher ran the Rewey gear leg jig
details and notes in the BPA Newsletter one or two issues
ago. If you don't get the newsletter, then I believe
Rewey still sells his packet of assorted Piet ideas and
details. If you don't want to buy the whole packet of
details, let me know and I'll see if I can get you just
the one page with the gear leg jig details but Rewey's
stuff is well worth the few bucks he charges for it.

WAY cool pictures! I marvel at how some people just have an eye for
photo composition and placement. I posess the antidote to such skill,
and love to see others work like this. It was even worth viewing
overmy very slow iPhone connection as we are camping this weekend and
I don't have my superfast connection. Still, some things are worth
waiting for :-) and these were worth the download time :-)

And while on the subject of props a question about prop leading edge
treatments. You can do nothing with the leading edge, add tape, have epoxy
added, or add a metal leading edge (and maybe other things). At Oshkosh I
talked to the people at Culver props who said they will tape a leading edge
but most they sell have no treatment at all. They recommended against adding
the epoxy leading edge because if it comes loose it can only be repaired by
the prop manufacturer. I received a new Tennessee prop with the epoxy
      treatment two weeks ago.

      Does anyone have any opinions?

I take it the plane that ended up with a broken crank is the one with the model
A engine that also had the broken mag mount earlier? I have not been following
the Piets progress long enough to know if that has been an issue like it apparently
has been with the Corvair from time to time.I believe I saw one of the
planes at Brodhead with a Model A running some type of metal blade adjustable
prop.I wonder if they're not better off with a light wood prop like the Corvair
or if they run better with a heavy one to act as a flywheel.Raymond

| Subject: | compression struts-- need some help, pls |

I have a some wing-building questions that center around the compression struts
      in the wings.

      1. How long are these struts? On the surface, this sounds dumb, but please bear
with me. For instance, the minimum distance between the front and rear spars
is the distance across the ribs. If made exactly to plans, that distance is
27 5/8", except as adjusted for the ply thicknesses added to the spars on both
ends and middle. So do you make the compression struts EXACTLY according to
that ADJUSTED rib dimension? My real question here is, if you do so, both all
the ribs and the several compression struts will be in compression. Is that
what you want? Or do you make the compression struts just a few thousandths
longer, so you can still slightly slide the ribs around until they are glued
      or nailed? Does it matter?

      2. The answer to that might well be interrelated to this question. What are the
sequences-- first, second, third-- gluing the compression struts, lightly tensioning
the drag/anti-drag wires, nailing the ribs, final tensioning the wires?

[Perhaps you need to know that for my wing layout I am using a flat table with
three "piers" on it. The piers hold the struts up. The spars look like a bridge
span sitting on the three piers. This is a method I borrowed from a posting
on "biplaneforum.com," as demonstrated to me by my friend here John Nunn, the
forum's founder(?), moderator, and webmaster, on his Skybolt wings. Thus I
have some flexibility in sequence. I have made the piers a little longer than
the 27 5/8" rib dimension FOR NOW, so that the ribs move on smoothly, but I
can adjust this to accommodate the intelligence you impart to me.]

      3. It seems strange that with all the gusseting we do elsewhere--to increase gluing
area and to triangulate attach points-- that the compression struts are
just butt-glued to the spars. IMO, in some ways these are the most important
sticks on the plane, after the longerons. Haven't you added glue blocks or a
light gusset, or made a U-pocket for the struts?

      Thanks,
      Tim in central TX

| Subject: | Tensioning cables without turnbuckles |

I really missed being at Brodhead this year to ask a few more questions. Here's
      one.

Gee, I know I will need over 20 turnbuckles, but some of you have avoided using
some turnbuckles in some cases. Let's take the empnnage as a case in point.
I get it that I can lightly bend the HStab down and release it after installing
a lower cable, and then put the final tension on with the upper cable and a
turnbuckle. But some of you proudly show that you have no turnbuckles on the
      empennage. Howudodat?

I know the trick of motorcycle chain links and making some with a little tighter
or looser hole spacings, but how do you tension things to slip the MC links
on, remove your "trick," and still have tension?

I would like not only to do this on the empennage (for a slicker install), but
for all my seatbelt and shoulder harness cables that run toward the tail, avoiding
      a few more turnbuckles.

I have thought of using a removable turnbuckle, but where do you grab the cable
with it, without marring the cable or the eyelet? And what else do you hook
it up to, to get your tension? Am I way off? Inquiring minds want to know.

      Your thoughts, please.

      Tim in central TX

Glad you liked the movie John, one of the producers told me that during the week
a young kid came up and told him that after watching the movie he and his dad
had decided to build a Pietenpol.

Here's an article from 'Airventure Today' about the Piet and it's journey:

      http://www.airventure.org/news/2009/090728_cup_racer.html

I think the guys that finished 2nd in the Turbine Legend in that pic were
'gypped'. They spent all that money, and they probably only had around an
hour and a half of enjoyment out of that race. Tres and his buddy had more
than 6 hours of fun with their humble Piet. Definitely more fun for the
      money!

      Shad,

Amen to that. Kurt has constructed a beautiful, clean example of the design.
We didn't get any good flying clips of her, but we do have this vid of a
startup and taxi from Sat. evening:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3keT-TQouTQ

And for whatever reason I didn't get a good full-on shot, I guess 'cause
Kurt came in a bit later. You can see pics of his Piet from last year on
WestCoastPiet (as always, thank you Chris!). However Jess took this shot
down the side of his Piet which I think is pretty neat:

Your Piet looked very nice this year as well, and it was great to see her in
the air. We look forward to joining you in the skies next year! Have a good
      night,
