Subject: Pietenpol-List: Winter Nap
Group, Well today was the bitter sweet day of puting the Pietenpol down for
the long winter nap. I re-arranged the hanger for the winter storage of the
piet, so I can get my tractors out for snow plowing, and pulling dumb-dumbs
out of the ditch if I happen to be around. As I put the piet in the corner
of the hanger I thought about all the joy it gave me the past 12 months.
Early this year I spent several hrs removing the heads for a cracked exaust
pipe, and the other for spark plug threaded inserts. I spent a few hrs
changing the fly wheel and fabricating spacers for a new ring gear
instalation, just a couple weeks before Brodhead. I thought about all the
knowlage I have gained working and flying this home-built flying machine.
All of the scarry, interesting, and rewarding moments of this airplane's
history were revisited in my mind. From the 1st failed attempt to brodhead
to my 1st OSH arrival. I have learned persivierance and disipline from
learning how to keep a experimental, auto engine flying, and staying safe,
and enjoying the experiance it provides. I have learned much about working
with my father, and gained knowlage from listening to what he tells me, and
not comprimising on anything questionable. The most memerable experiance
this year of 2009 was the flight from Brodhead to Waupun WI. I was living a
boyhood fantasy of a real Dawn Patrol from an open cockpit, with 7 other
pilots, probably living the same fantasy in there own minds. Now done
flying the Piet for the winter, I stand at my shop door in my hanger,
looking out from the warm shop, and I am still amazed that my father built
damn near every piece on that airplane. Then I look up at all the pieces I
have made on my little biplane, and hope that some day they all come
togeather and carry me from the surrly bonds of earth, just as the Pietenpol
my Father built just a few years ago.
Happy Building, (and flying to those of you down south, or with pavement or
skis)

Really well-written Shad and not only did you hit upon the romanticism of o
ur kind of open cockpit barnstorming
type flying but you shared how significantly building, flying, and maintain
ing your Pietenpol and engine have
given you a motherload of outstanding educational experiences and knowledge
that you can pass along to others
who follow your footsteps. Sharing the project and flying with your Dad
and the connection it forged between you
two is something that cannot be compared to even the price of a pound of pl
atinum. Very few have experienced
the journey that you and your Dad have. Don Emch and his father come to m
ind and I know they share the same
appreciations for what you've gone thru. It isn't just about building and
flying your own airplane---it takes on an
entire life of it's own and provides an education degree that no college or
university course listing can ever offer.

Some have the misfortune of being born here (like my wife). I made
the choice to marry a Yankee, so I wound up here by default - our
daughter is the only child of an only child - it was either move
close to the grandparents or have my mother in law camped at our
house six months a year - what would you do in that
circumstances? :). Earlier this week I was in Raleigh for a few
days consulting with a customer - nice & warm, sunny, and real
barbeque - there definitely some things I sure miss about the South
(not the hurricanes though).

Mikee-
I, too, have saved some personal correspondence from Tony
Bingelis. His handwriting, unlike his drawings, was not
the best ;o) I have two copies of "Sportplane Builder"-
one of which is autographed.
As you may know, Tony lived right here in central Texas
and was one of the motivating factors behind what used to
be called SWRFI... the Southwest Regional [EAA] Fly-In.
Our own EAA chapter's number, 35, indicates how far back
we go in this area... and much of it due to people like
Tony.

Subject: | Re: Winter Nap nope BUILDAPALOOZA 09 and 10 |
All a matter of perspective, anyone that has a yard in the north knows the
warm months are filled with work, hot sweaty long and arduous endless hour
s
and days yard work and more yard work. As a Piet builder I can't wait for
winter and the colder months marking the end of another yard year. As
disappointing as it may sound, no work can be done outside. Leaving only
one
option and It begins on Black Friday. While others are out spending hard
earned credit balances on stuff no one really needs or wants under sky's
of
florescent malls and ceilings adorned in artificial ornamentations pushing
and
shoving their way through, the magic time begins. Black Friday marks the
opening and ramp up to the ultimate time of the year.
Here is where the planning and ordering of parts, bits and pieces of
hardware, shackles, clips and turnbuckles all come together is a synergist
ic
orchestra of BUILDAPALOOZA 09 &10. That's right fans. I get a chance to
build
my airplane with little of no intervention from the yard work and honey
doo
list. Mine all mine build time from morning to night every weekend its me
in the shop building my dream ship. Its me John Recine AKA Mr. Peabody an
d I
am building my "Waybak Machine" that will transport me and my guest
(grandson Luca) AKA Sherman in the forward pit back to the Golden Age of
Aviation, the date is 1930 and we are cruising across the farm fields and
lush
pastures of the countryside of Lancaster Pennsylvania headed towards the
Midwestern heartland in the "Waybak Machine" just as the barnstormed did
in the
Golden Age.
Who can complain about that? From winter to spring when the yard awakens
again and buildapalooza dwindles down to a whimper making way once again
for the yard. And until the yard is in full swing and the shop goes dark
once
again for these rotten months of summer and only Brodhead to look forward
to. How can any builder complain about winter. That's like a farmer who
complains about making hay while the sun shines that's just not part of
the
vocabulary. Building the Piet and hopefully flying the Waybak Machine is
the
most fun and joy anyone can ever have with their cloths on, (except for
that day at Markle's, another story).
Nope, not me I not trading the snow, ice and cold for a 95 degree day with
99% humidity and hoping the lawn mower will blow up or run out of gas as
the endless chore of fighting the yard continues, that you can have. I wo
uld
much rather build my Piet in the solitude of winters short days, long
nights and quieted complaints of the yard, grass and extraneous activitie
s, dogs
and distractions.
I am builder hear me saw and sniff my dust I am happy to see the beginning
of BUILDAPALOOZA and don't forget to Smile son!

Neat story Shad... especially about the dawn patrol. That must have been something.
I don't have a flying machine yet, but I hear ya on the cold part. It was 20*
here last night, and expected to be around the same tonight. I've been eating
kerosene fumes all week in order to keep working on my wings. Tomorrow morning
ought to be memorable (I'm sure I'll look back on these days of BUILDING even
after I'm flying)... turn the key on a frost covered lock to open the doors,
carry in my thermos of coffee, fire up the heater and wait 5-10 minutes for
the fluorescent light to get bright enough to see what I'm doing.
It's not so bad though... this is Oklahoma. Although winter may very well have
arrived (I blaming Markle for bringing it), it could very well be 60* next week,
or Christmas day, or 3 weekends in January. Ha ha!

Ah, Mr. Peabody, his pet boy Sherman and their glorious "Wayback Machine."
Those were the days when cartoons actually moved something besides their
mouths and the stories even had a point to them. I could wax nostalgic (if
I knew how) about those glorious days sitting in front of the B&W screen
half filled with "snow" and wait for that final glib play on words from
the fabulous Mr. Peabody: "Haven't you ever heard of Chicken catch a
Tory?"
I just caught a recent reference to those glorious days from a modern
cartoonist, Mark Parisi (Off The Mark) where Mr. Peabody tells Sherman:
"Set the Wayback Machine back to my puppy days so I can pummel you
senseless for planning to get me fixed."
Aahh! You young whippersnappers just don't understand fine humor.
Sorry! absolutely nothing to do with my stalled Pietenpol project so.. .

Hey Ryan. You must have looked at the steel gauge conversion chart rather than
the temperature chart. You have to throw a "-" in front of your Celsius temperature

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Winter Nap
Group, Well today was the bitter sweet day of puting the Pietenpol down for the
long winter nap. I re-arranged the hanger for the winter storage of the piet,
so I can get my tractors out for snow plowing, and pulling dumb-dumbs out of
the ditch if I happen to be around. As I put the piet in the corner of the hanger
I thought about all the joy it gave me the past 12 months. Early this year
I spent several hrs removing the heads for a cracked exaust pipe, and the other
for spark plug threaded inserts. I spent a few hrs changing the fly wheel
and fabricating spacers for a new ring gear instalation, just a couple weeks
before Brodhead. I thought about all the knowlage I have gained working and
flying this home-built flying machine. All of the scarry, interesting, and rewarding
moments of this airplane's history were revisited in my mind. From the
1st failed attempt to brodhead to my 1st OSH arrival. I have learned persivierance
and disipline from learning how to keep a experimental, auto engine flying,
and staying safe, and enjoying the experiance it provides. I have learned
much about working with my father, and gained knowlage from listening to what
he tells me, and not comprimising on anything questionable. The most memerable
experiance this year of 2009 was the flight from Brodhead to Waupun WI.
I was living a boyhood fantasy of a real Dawn Patrol from an open cockpit, with
7 other pilots, probably living the same fantasy in there own minds. Now
done flying the Piet for the winter, I stand at my shop door in my hanger, looking
out from the warm shop, and I am still amazed that my father built damn near
every piece on that airplane. Then I look up at all the pieces I have made
on my little biplane, and hope that some day they all come togeather and carry
me from the surrly bonds of earth, just as the Pietenpol my Father built just
a few years ago.
Happy Building, (and flying to those of you down south, or with pavement or skis)
Shad

All this talk about putting the fine machines away for the winter!! I flew

smooth air and no bugs on the prop. It's supposed to hit 30 degrees on Sat.

Re covering the fuse what is the consensus for reinforcing tapes over the top stringers?
Tapes on stringers before covering
Tapes over stringers after covering or
No tapes at all

Two blocks of poplar with T-88 glued as shown in front of the
rudder bar to prevent the rudder from hitting either elevator.
My FAA inspector wanted to see control stops (Bingelis warns of
this in his books plus it just makes good sense)
on all of my controls.

Subject: | Air Camper plans question |
All,
Am planning to order the Pietenpol Air Camper plans along with the long fuselage
and three piece wing supplements, should I also order the builders manual and
rib template supplements?
My reason for asking on the later two is Ive read the rib template was a bit out
of true and that so many of the old magazine articles covering Mr. Pietenpols
Air Camper builds are carried on line.
Ive already noticed the CAD drawings here as well as other material so I want
to make an informed choice of what to order/purchase initially.
Regards & Happy Holidays

I'm not having much luck finding vintage pieces for my piet instrument panel
(to replace the paper versions); altimeter, airspeed indicator, slip
indicators. Meanwhile, I'm making my own of the later. Anyone have any
leads, or any they want to sell to make room in their garages?

Subject: | Re: Air Camper plans question |
Joe,
The potential exists for the rib template to not be dimensionally correct,
but the one received when we ordered our plans was perfect. Measure the
distance between the front and rear spars on your print, and if it is
correct (27 3/4" if I recall) then you should be fine (you can check
dimensions at other stations along the rib if you want to see if it is
*perfect*). And if it isn't dimensionally sound then you still have a nice
big print of your Piet rib to decorate your shop with, for only $20. :P
The meat of the builder's manual is the text from the Flying and Glider
manual articles about the Air Camper, Sky Scout, and Ford engine
conversions. However there is also a section where Mr. Pietenpol describes
all the changes he made when converting for the Corvair (airframe and
engine), and a number of pages of building hints, suggestions, and answers
to frequently asked questions. I already had the EAA reprints of the F&G
manuals when I ordered the plans, but I'm glad we purchased a copy of the
'Builder's Manual'.
The rib template saves you the time of lofting the rib dimensions onto your
jig, and also gives you full size templates for all of the gussets. The
'Builder's Manual' makes a nice addition to the plans package, and does hav
e
some good information. All in all I think it's $57 worth of good stuff that
you won't kick yourself for purchasing, especially after you spend many
thousands of dollars more on building your Piet.

I have a collection in my shop that I have yet to verify, unfortunately
only the DG is ancient the other are either nos or hand me downs. I will not
be willing to part with any until I get my panel figured out and populated
to suit my needs. Once I get past that part I can make the leftovers
available just nothing right now.

I just kept watching ebay, and went to the fly market at SNF and OSH. Not
that I have vintage instruments in mine (although the front seat altimeter
is WWII vintage, as well as the front seat compass).

Roger that Jack, sounds like a great reason to return to SNF/BH/OSH!!
John, thanks, same here. Got a bunch of old (WWII) gages, heavy and most inop.
I didn't realize how quick I would be working on the instrument panel, now it's
on hold until I know what I'll have.
I wonder if Matt would consider adding a separate "classified page" on this list.
Our similar boat forum page has one and it is very active. Would be a good
way to share/swap pieces and parts.

Caveat Emptor - I'm not sure a GN-1 motor mount will work with a regular
ole Pietenpol. I know the motor mount for my A-65 is quite a bit longer
than 11 3/4 inches. Probably more like 16":

Winter ? ? All this type of weather does for those that are reluctant to get their
nose red, is make a person dream, and dream you will.I too have kept all those
memories, from the 60'S to the present. Allen Rudolf's was my first Piet
to fly, and he introduced me to Mr Pietenpol, and Vi. The early 40s started me
flying and you all will never forget all your moments in that first flight
of your Pietenpol.
After returning from Oshkosh, I got my well healed Piet back in the air with a
spare prop. and a few more hours, The ski season is here and as well as cooler
weather, Warm water in the Ford allows a smooth start, with the radiator covered
80 % the balance of heat is directed to the front cockpit, this makes for
winter Piet excitements.

Thank's for the information Ryan. I hadn't thought about the "rib print" on the
shop wall, that one made me grin. I've already laid out space in my basement
to do the rib's and tail feathers. Time will tell on a pole barn or work shop.
