Buggy,
That garage sounds great; I'm utilizing a family room. It's also good to
have extra time in the winter. I made the commitment to work on mine daily,
even if it's only an hour. I can't believe the progress being made now. I
too wanted a starter and shopping for a 0200 currently. I'm shying away
from the 85 because parts are getting harder to find for them. Take Ryan's
advice, the archives are fantastic. Type in a search string and voila
instant gratification! You will find definite opinions on EVERYTHING. In
my opinion staying close the plans, using quality wood and staying with a
aircraft engine is the way to go.

Thanks for the replies guys, It's great to see that you are building! I
would like to build many different planes but raising two young girls (3&4
yrs old), takes alot of time and $$$!
Having plans in hand already, and always liking the pietenpol, I really want
to build one!!! I have a 28x48 garage to work in and have alot of time
during the winter months.
I would like to run an 65 or 85 in it, at least something with a starter and
gen/alt.
Are most guys building the 3 piece wing due to workspace restrictions or is
it just easier?
Who has the best quality/price on spruce & ply?
Extended fuse or not?
Sorry for all the questions all at once but I want to get a good game plan.
Thanks, Buggy.

For anybody contemplating carving their own prop, here is a link to a cool
site that has many examples of cool, old-time-looking prop shapes, along
with historical information on many early prop types.
www.woodenpropeller.com
I need help finding some information on how to apply brass prop tipping.
I have read verbal explanations on how to do this, but have never seen an
y photos showing anyone actually doing it. Is it just bent by hand, with
hammers etc., without pre-forming, against the prop? It would seem to me
that it would be very difficult to get it to lay flat against the wood fo
rming it this way. Can anybody help me find this info?

When my son Mike started our project 2 years ago I was not impressed but we
nt into it with him to have a father and son project. Well=2C there is som
ething about this Pietenpol thing that gets to you. A great network and th
e plane itself has a great reputation within the flying community. I have
since bought into the project as a partner.
We are building the long version=2C 3 piece wing from plans purchased from
the Pietenpol family. we did add the door to the front so an old guy (me)
can get into the front. We are building with spruce because we feel the d
ifference in weight and strength will pay for the difference in material co
st over the years. We did use poplar for the rear deck as I had a couple h
undred feet in stock and it is not really structural. Since I already ha
d poplar we could have done the whole thing in poplar but it is not quite a
s strong. Granted=2C the design is over built and it probably would be ple
nty strong.
We are using a rebuilt junk yard Corvair engine in order to have enough pow
er to lift 2 large guys at one time.
If you decide to go with a Piet you will have access to a lot of help.

e wants a four place so the kids can ride too but=2C there is no way to aff
ord such a thing. Have been coming back to the Pietenpol idea more often=2C
the kids are small yet so they both will fit in front cockpit. Or one at a
time. I have Grega plans that were given to me back in 02=2C not sure if I
want to use them or go with original plans. Any advice and/or suggestions
will be greatly appreciated! Thanks=2C Buggy.

Where are you? Freight and convenience are factors on the wood and plywood.

Hi Dan!
-
There is an excellent book of 1921 called The Airplane Propeller where you
can find some information about copper tipping, fabric sheathing and even p
igskin tipping! You can download this book here www.archive.org/details/air

When we were-in Oshkosh I took a couple of photos showing the metal tippi
ng (brass maybe?) on a Waco prop. You can see the cuts made to-form the m
etal properly.
Attached is a small drawing that can be useful to.

Hi Buggy
-
Humbly, I-think-you should build a Pietenpol.- I only see disadvantag
es in the Grega design.

Subject: | Sky Scout Project |
Early last year, Dad sold his Mooney and decided to devote his time to fini
shing our Piet.- It's been a while now and Dad misses having a fast plane
.- We already have one low and slow plane, so he wants to sell the Piet a
nd start on a faster project.-
-
Our plane is a Sky Scout with all the woodwork done.- The wings, ailerons
, fuse, and empenage are all built.- Most of the hinges and pulleys are t
here.- The control stick and torque stick are near complete.- The rudde
r pedals are built.- It is ready for landing gear, motor and mount, and m
ock up for covering.- There is a fiberglass cowl tank that I would be cau
tious about trusting unless you are going to use only ethanol free fuels.
- We aquired it from the son of the origional builder who was deceased.
- The son didn't know anything about the project, so we don't know what w
ood or glue was used.- The construction is beautiful and the builder was
very meticulous about most everything.- I have a set of plans that we bou
ght from the Pietenpol family with builder's manual.- I may also include
a set of 19 inch motorcycle wheels with lightweigth disk brakes and master
cylinders, a new air speed indicator, and a beautiful altimeter that is jus
t like
Papa Mikes if I recall correclty.-
-
The wings-and tail could be added to someones-Air Camper and knock a lo
t of time off of your build.-
-
Dad would like to get $1000 for everything.-- He would probably take $8
00 for the project minus wheels and instruments.- It is located in his ha
nger just south of Waxahachie Lake in TX.- If anyone wants to see it they
could land at KJWY and we will pick you up, or if you have good STOL capab
ilities, you could land at his 850ft grass strip.-
-
Email me off list and I can send pics.

If you're in Da UP, check out the EAA chapter in Iron Mountain. At least one guy
there has built a Pietenpol and they are a very active chapter, or were anyway.
I know it's a hike from Ironwood to IMT but I'm betting it'll be worth it.
Don't remember the chapter number. Good luck and welcome to the club.

Wow!!!! You guys are great!!!!!! Good to see all the replies!!!!!
I am in the U.P. of Mi. , lots of snow here, just got home from Eagle River Wi.
, watching world champion snowmobile oval racing!!! Great fun!!!!
#1. I am leaning more toward Pietenpol plans more than Grega's, One of my A&P
instructors gave them to me (Grega)when he chose the originals instead. (No offense
toward Grega)
#2. Poplar is abundant here where I live, never gave that enough thought, Thanks
for the suggestion.
#3. I need to do some more research on the Corvair engine, Could be cheaper than
65/85.
#4. I think there is one flying out of Marquette Mi. that I could look at, about
2.5 hrs away from home. Well worth the ride, as that is where I went to get
my A&P and Private pilot from. Would be great to see the old school again!!!!
#5. Have fun guys and keep building!!!!!!!!! Hope to join the ranks soon!!!!!!!
Buggy.
