Hello everyone. It has been a few years since I moved from the Dallas,
Texas area to South Texas......Corpus Christi. I finally got the GN-1
to its new home to nearby Ingleside.

This past Sunday I saw and later met the owner of a true Piet based in
Rockport. He and I would like to see who else in the South Texas area
      has a Piet/GN-1.

      Thanks in advance.

Being a metal worker, I know a little about this kind of thing.

The first thing to know is that you've got to keep annealing your brass by heating
it and quenching it (the opposite of ferrous metals). While you're working
it, it'll get hard pretty quick, and as soon as that starts, you've got to stop
      and anneal it again.

I've looked at a few tips and many seem to have made some judicious slices to help
with the sharper bends and filled them with solder later.

A negative mold might work, but I'd say start with some pretty thin brass and use
a positive shape of hard wood and use a light planishing hammer to just start
working it around the form. There are many metal forms available to help get
the shapes you need, and a metal working sandbag is very helpful.

I'm sure there are plenty of articles on the internet about sheet metal forming
      that would be very helpful.

Mike, depending upon how far south is "south TX," Oscar Zuniga in San Antonio,
and on this board, is certainly a great contact and his true Piet is a good model
      for you for comparison.

Bill Rewey sells a packet of stuff that includes one example. His $20 packet has
      a LOT of worthwhile stuff.

There are others here with similar stuff but I like to throw business his way since
he works so hard for the BPA.

I did the straight axle gear so I didn't keep much information on the other gear

I taught there for a year in the early 90's. The A&P program was actually started
in the late 80's and the first class graduated in 91, iirc. Since the school
was part of the Tech Ed department and located by the main campus (no runway),
they never could have a real flight school.

The program was started by a guy named Jim Dehlin, now retired, who lost both legs
mid-thigh in Vietnam. In spite of that, he was a DE and flew a Piper Comanche
on a SODA. An inspiring guy.

| Subject: | Off Topic - Rocket Racing League |

I sent this out via e-mail and facebook... but I just want to reach as many people
as I can... so I'm reposting it.

Last night at our EAA meeting, we visited with Jim Bridenstine (Tulsa Air and Space
Museum Director) and Shuttle Endeavor Mission Specialist (STS-113, Flight
Engineer), CDR John Harrington. Both spoke about the TASM Air Show/Rocket Racing
event that will be held on Saturday, March 13 at TASM (NW corner of Tulsa
International Airport). I know that I sent many of you a write up on the Rocket
Racing League nearly a year ago, but I cant possibly cover all the details
that were discussed last night. In brief, there should be several aircraft displays
and demonstrations, and they are planning to have jumbotrons placed where
spectators can enjoy a POV view of the race while it occurs in front of and
in the air above the crowd. This will be the first (and quite possibly the
last) rocket race in Tulsa. These things are very powerful and very loud mark
your calendars and invite your friends this ought to be an awesome event.

These fellows also gave us an update on their efforts to acquire a space shuttle for the Tulsa Air and Space Museum. Of the three that will be entering retirement, one is already spoken for (Enterprise - NASA). Two remain Endeavor and Atlantis. CDR Harrington would obviously like to see Endeavor land in Tulsa. Here is one of the videos that we watched at our meeting last night. http://www.landtheshuttle.com/ When you go to the link, you will have to click on the Media/Gallery link once there, click on Videos and play the default video that comes up. It is about 6 minutes long.

Felice Baldwin (wife of Dr. Guy Baldwin) visited with us about the need for volunteers
in order to get the Oklahoma air show circuit back up and running. Guy
was the coordinator and air boss at the Claremore Wings Over Oklahoma Air Show
up until the last event in 2005, and they were both instrumental in the Muskogee
air shows, which havent occurred for several years. For those that didnt
know him, Guy Baldwin was the Aviation Medical Examiner for most of us in the
Tulsa area he was killed in an accident in 2006. Im not sure what may be in
the works for the coming year, but Felice was generally trying to reach out for
suggestions and support (volunteers) in the event that we land a show in the
      coming season.

We had a really good program to start the year off right. Ill keep you posted
if I hear anything more on these or other aviation events.

      Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm out-of-luck for a while, though.
The digital archives span from 1953 - through Dec 2008, then skip Jan
      through Mar of 2009. Humph.

Or, I'll could poke around some friend's libraries to see if they have
      the article.

A gentlemen contacted me off the list and said that he was using Callair
wooden skis on his Chief. I suspect that's what the gent from La Sueur
has. They look like a dandy set of skis...

      Cheers,
      Dan

Did some verification with the GPS this weekend and my airspeed indicator

Although I am normally in South Texas, at the moment I'm sitting in Medford, Oregon
pondering the 30+ MPH winds that are howling through the Rogue Valley. We
lived here for nearly 10 years and are poised to being moving back here but
our doggone house in San Antonio won't sell.

Anyway, the Piet in Rockport/Aransas Pass that you're referring to is more than
likely the beautiful Ford "A"-powered Piet that belongs to Ron and Pat Hollmer.
I have only seen pictures of it but it's a very nice airplane. I've planned
to fly down there and get together with Ron ever since he moved down there,
not just to see him and the airplane but because our youngest son is a boat captain
and fishing guide in nearby Port Aransas and I've been promising him an
air tour of the area in my Piet. Maybe we can pull it together this spring??

I did mine by feel and sound. They should go "Thummm", not "Pinnnng", and
should all be close to the same pitch. However, make sure that in trying to
get the right tension on the wires that you don't shift the rigging of the
airplane. The wire's purpose is to maintain the geometry of the airplane.
As long as they are not slack they can do their job.

      Hey Kevin,

I've heard that you can use rubber grommets with washers to keep the lexan from
cracking. Let me know what hole size and I might be able to scrounge some up
      for you.

Well, this is a decision I've dreaded....

I'm selling my project. VERY close to "ready to cover" and the Model A engine
      runs great.

Fact is, Julia and I are having to make some sacrifices during these tough economic
times and the Piet (along with several other things we cherish) must go.

I put it on barnstormers and may also try eBay.

This list and my friends here are very important to me and I don't like getting
so off topic, so I won't take up any more time here for this subject.

      John,

Thanks for the update. Where is Needville?

We are located on the Gulf of Mexico, but can head
      inland and meet you guys.

Good luck on the GN-1 project. How far along are you?

I'll send pics of mine if you like.

      Take care.

        Hi Mike,

Jim Sury and I are building a GN-1 at Massamiliano airfield, 4TAO,
near Needville TX. Drop by some weekend if you get a chance, I'm also
building a hangar/apt. there. Jim finished his GN-1 several years ago.

      Oscar,

You are exactly right. It is Ron Hollmer whom I met last Sunday and his
      airplane
is BEAUTIFUL. With our traditional coastal winds, he handled the Piet
      with ease
      on take off and landing.

He does have a Ford engine and homemade wooden prop. The paint scheme
is eye catching. The spoke motorcycle tires and straight axle gear just
      add to
      the ambiance.

Please come down and let's have a Coastal Bend fly-in. Three Piets
      flying along
the Gulf Coast beachline would be a treat. Fishing would be an added
      bonus.

      Thanks Oscar.....

Although I am normally in South Texas, at the moment I'm sitting in
Medford, Oregon pondering the 30+ MPH winds that are howling through the
Rogue Valley. We lived here for nearly 10 years and are poised to being
moving back here but our doggone house in San Antonio won't sell.

Anyway, the Piet in Rockport/Aransas Pass that you're referring to is
more than likely the beautiful Ford "A"-powered Piet that belongs to Ron
and Pat Hollmer. I have only seen pictures of it but it's a very nice
airplane. I've planned to fly down there and get together with Ron ever
since he moved down there, not just to see him and the airplane but
because our youngest son is a boat captain and fishing guide in nearby
Port Aransas and I've been promising him an air tour of the area in my
Piet. Maybe we can pull it together this spring??

      Kevin,

We can meet in the middle somewhere. It would be just great to meet
and look over the planes and compare notes.

Maybe one day, we can have a Texas Piet fly-in, fun and
      fellowship.....and
of course good old Texas Bar-B-Que.

      Thanks Kevin for the note.

I don't have my latest edition of the BPA Newsletter (the one put out by Doc and
Dee Mosher) but there is a revised detail of the spring struts in it. I think
one or two of the tube sizes changed to allow them to slide inside one another
or something. 41CC flies with this type of spring strut and it works great.

Speaking of the Newsletter, if you don't already subscribe, you should do so.
It is a nice complement to the Matronics e-list in that Doc includes some good
correspondence and news from Piet owners and builders who are not on the Matronics
list or who don't do computers and webpages. Also good info on Piet-related
events, classified ads, tips and tricks, and some down-home stuff from builders
      and pilots.

Kevin; I guess I need to check the ASI on 41CC especially since my friend Mark Langford did it the "water manometer with plastic tubing and a ruler" way and showed how simple it is to calibrate your ASI. Details are on his website at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/airspeed_calibration/

However, 41CC seems to perform pretty much as others have described in cruise,
flare, landing, dive, and everything else and I'd be happy knowing my instrument
      is within 10% of actual.

And I hear what you're saying about headwinds. When my friend Charlie ferried
41CC from Shreveport to south Texas, he was flying into our typical southeast
prevailing breeze here and he sure got tired of sitting in that seat watching
vehicle traffic passing on Interstate 35 down below.
