Good People,
I personally have been dreaming about building and flying this airplane fo
r over 10 years. Now I am almost to the finish line, as is Jim Markle. I
know how it feels to go through all the trials in life that these 10 year
s have thrown in. I am very fortunate that I have been able to weather all
the storms (so far) and able to go on to the finish (hopefully). That is
why I think it is for a great cause to pledge a few bucks, so somebody el
se can see their dream come to fruition after all the years of work. If I
had to give up now, I would surely shrivel-up and die in my spirit.

Well put and well placed, thanks for that expression of support and
commitment, Dreamers, Lurkers and friends are all welcome to express their
commitment, comments and considerations. My apologies if I somehow neglected to
include or inadvertently did not invite anyone or group from their partic

Thanks Rod I appreciate your commitment and correction, no offence was

Thanks again for your contribution Rod!
We are sitting at 35 contributions, for a total of $2890. Almost halfway to
the goal on the first day! Now we just need to sustain the momentum.
Remember, you can donate to the cause by emailing us at
marklepietenpolfund@gmail.com with your pledged contribution. Also, you can
check the running total at: http://users.rcn.com/ryan.mueller/markle.htm.
Sorry it's not fancier; I have been updating the total as contributions come
in, so at least it's accurate. :P
Thank you everyone!

Mike,
Well said.and not forgetting that Markle is like the Good Will Ambassador of
this fine group.traveling around the country . grousing meals and drinks.I
mean.establishing great relationships everywhere he goes.all based on the
Pietenpol. Too bad for the Boys Down Under, and across the Pond, that his
employer doesn't have business there.
I suspect others feel as I do, that losing him as that ambassador would be a
loss to us all.

No Offence taken. I hope I didn't imply there was. Like Mike Cuy says this

The thing about not building yet and just being a lurker is that you guys w

Hey guys, I am ready to fly but my CHT says not to. On my taxi test at idle it
reads 300, but when I try increased RPM it goes up to 400 0r above. I have a corvair
with a warp drive prop. My cowling is square with two 5 inch inlet holes
with the proper exit amount. The warp drive hub takes the prop and pitch out
beyond the inlet cooling holes thereby not giving me enough cooling air on the
ground. Barry Davis told me that he heard of one builder with the same problem
and his fix was to make two tabs perpendicular to the blades to force air to
the cylinders on the ground. They would be balanced of course but my thought
would be to make a small prop shape to bolt on to the hub. It would be pitched
to the prop thereby forcing air through the cowling. I hope I am making sense
out of all this, so any thoughts from the group on this?`cheers, Gardiner Mason

Gardiner,
Might be a good question to post on the Corvair list, too, but are you sure
you have enough 'vent' at the bottom to exhaust the air? And equally sure
you have a good seal around your fairings? And...this is a longshot...but,
on my Aeronca Sedan, I had a CHT gauge that was just plain wrong. I finally
discovered it when I put the end in some boiling water...did you know that
water actually boils at 300deg? ;-0

Gardiner, It sounds like possibly an eronious reading of the cht.- I don'
t recall our cht's reading that high on the ground.- Are you using the st
ock corvair cht probe?, location?- And what are the ambient temps?- As
a reference, what oil cooler set up do you have, and is oil temp high.- I
f possible try doing some ground runs with the cowling off, I don't know if
you have the pressure cowl, or eyebrows, but see if it makes a difference.
- Do a vissual check of the heads and make sure you don't have any induct
ion leaks, at the head, or intake, detonation will ruin your day (not to me
ntion your engine, trust me, we learned the hard way!)- One easy way to c
heck (albeit not 100% accurate) for induction leaks is run the engine up to
full power and pull the carb heat on, and see if your rpm's drop off, if t
hey increase you are either way too lean or you have an induction leak lean
ing out your engine.- Any leak around a gasket down stream of the
cabarator will lean the mixture.- And finnaly double check the timing, i
f it is too far advanced it might increase the CHT.
-
Hope this gives you some usefull advise, at least hings to check foe,
Shad
-
P.S.- keep me informed, I will think some more about it=0A=0A=0A

I am sure you have checked both the sender and the gauge. What is your oil temperature
doing ? And did you clean out all the aluminum flashing from the heads
during the rebuild. Temperature seems very high if you are certain that air
is moving through the engine compartment. Double check ignition timing. What
carb are you using ?

Hello to the wonderful and very generous piet group. Ryan and I have been tallying
your pledges and man, it is overwhelming. We have had more than 46 people
commit to donations for Markle Mania and our grand total so far is $3,760. Our
highest donation so far has been $150, and we have had contributors from as far
away as Australia and South America. List-regulars, lurkers, family and friends
have all offer their contributions and they are all greatly appreciated.
Here are some websites that you can visit to get into the Markle Mania spirit:

Jess,
Thanks for the update. Hard to believe just 24 hours ago we had an idea and
now we are almost 2/3 there. I don't know where or how where we could ever
find a finer bunch of folks. I hope the spirit keeps the Markle O Mometer
rising to the goal. We are rapidly approaching the mark it would be great
to get to it by the closing of the market.
Markle a man of his word, has told me if we don't hit it by closing time
then its over, he's not willing or wanting to drag this on or out. Once its
done its done no going back and no regrets I agreed with him. So the time
table has been set we are 23 hours down and 2/3 there well almost.

I'm headed to bed for the night, so the Markle-Mometer will not be updated
any further until the morning. Please keep sending in your generous
contributions...we've made tremendous progress in just 24 hours, and now we
need to keep it up until we hit the finish line. I hope to be able to add in
a big bump to the total in the morning. Be creative...enlist others! Jess's
mother Mary is in for a share, and even one of Jess's co-workers threw in
$10 (she didn't give them a sales pitch, she was just telling the story of
what the group is trying to do and they wanted to help).
Have a good night everyone, and thank you all!
