I routed my rear spar. Both my spars are =BE=94 but the rear spar I
routed down
to =BD=94 thick in the middle. I calculated the weight savings and
confirmed it
by weighing the spars before and after. The weight savings was 1.89 lbs
just for the two rear spars. For a 1=94 spar the savings would be
substantial.

Subject: Re: Re: Pietenpol-List: 1/2" web
About a year ago when I priced it from both Wicks and Aircraft Spruce,
the
cost of the 1/2" center with four 1" x 1/4" capstrips was more than the
cost
of the solid spars, so I went solid and routed. Of course, the plywood
center web may be cheaper, I did not price that. One question I could
never
get a good answer to is how/where the proper splices would be (building
a
one-piece wing). I would think that they could be anywhere as long as
they
were staggered. Of course, this would not be a problem if building a
3-piece where all of the components could be full length without
splices. I
like the built-up spars, the examples on here are beautiful, but
cheaper
and more original won out.
Unfortunately, I did not weigh before and after routing, but I can tell
you
that the weight saving is substantial, not miniscule as some on here
have
suggested. Pietenpol says 25% and I think that is probably right. If
it is
wrong, it is low.

That bottom front piece just provides more surface to glue the bottom
of the firewall to. (Sorry about ending that sentence with a
preposition but I am too lazy right now to make it grammatically
correct).

N8031, empty weight 710, gross weight 1200.
Vx - 49mph (GPS)
Vy - 59mph (GPS)
Vne - 120mph (what the builder felt like putting down - he had it up to
140mph in the logs)
Vs - ?? (I should check, but I'm guessing it's about 35mph)
The best place to put the static and pitot is in clear flowing air away
from things like wings, struts, fuselage, etc. Jacks' is probably the
best place I've seen on a Piet, way out in the front of the wing away
from obstructions and things that could mess with the air pressures.
On glass gliders, since there's no engine to disrupt the flow of air
over the fuse, static ports are generally about 1/2 back, flush with the
side. The pitot is generally in the nose, though there are clear
warnings on such gliders like Schleicher ASK-21 that if you're going to
fly inverted, then you need to attach the extension tube to make sure
that the pitot is out in there in the clear air.

Clif,
I must have missed this discussion. It looks slick.
Is this the wiring on the "hot" side to your starter solenoid, and how you have
insulated the hot from the firewall, which may be intentionally "ground"?

Great question, I am also ready to remove my engine and start fuselage

The fabric on 41CC wraps around the front, under the metal firewall. I guess you
could cement the fabric to the sides without wrapping it "around the corner"
on the front though.

The fabric on our Piet also wraps. The overlap onto the front is
about four inches of fabric; the fabric does not cover the entire
surface of the front piece.

Subject: | Re: Elevator Control Horn Bending |
The "jig" I used and it worked perfectly, was a really long 1/2" drill bit. A
round bar would work just fine also. Also needed a vise but clamped the round
bar stock right along the edge to be bent over....with the bar offset enough
that one end extends past the bar and the other end is right over the center line
of the bar. As you ping the thin metal over the bar the "bent" part (that
joins to the other side) gradually has less and less "bend" and is almost flat
at one end.
This probably doesn't make much sense but if you're interested, I'll make a sketch
of how I formed the horns with just a round bar and about 3 minutes of "pinging"
with a small hammer.
Incredibly simple and far stronger than you can imagine....

got the standard two blocks of wood, which is always the most fun. Just wondering
if a bead roller is necessary to obtain a more accurate bend for welding?

Thanks. I looked at this battery and realized it's
completely sealed. "So what's going to leak?"
asked inner child. Ah, ha, said outer adult with
big smile on face.
Besides, there's NO place else to put it! :-)
I don't suppose you noticed the bolt with the ceramic
bit it goes through, upper left. That's Speed Queen drier
element part # RPT12 or #400-32-33. The negative
will attach to one of the oil filter bolts on the right and
then, engineside, wait a minute! I just realized. I'm
using steel braided aeroquip oil lines between engine and
filter. I don't have to wire the outside! :-) :-)

The front edges of the fabric if not glued to the firewall on mine at
least would be covered by the cowling.

Ending a sentence with a preposition is the kind of pedantry up with which I will
not put.
