Well Mike, a great first step. Not wanting to be too overbearing, however at the risk of being found out early on I will. Following your plans delivery and the long and arduous task of contemplation, study and decision making after pondering the question of " Now What?" and beginning the build process you need to meet up with us in Brodhead. Some of us had made our associations through this message board and later on got a chance to visit or meet in person through our business and related travels. The easy way is to just come to Brodhead. You'll get a chance to meet, greet, photograph to your hearts content and with a collection of great and interesting folks, and well if you have to, yes, you may even have to be exposed to Markle too! (a really great guy and at the brunt of most of my cheap and low intellect humor) But a really fantastic bunch of people all willing to help when you need them. For me its like Christmas in July or Mecca for the Piet builders. If you love aviation, airplanes, Pietenpols, meeting new friends and telling big lies with an occasional adult beverage Brodhead is the place to be. I attend in July and by August 1st I have plans in place for the next years trip. You never know you may be able to hop a ride, it has been know to happen and quite frequently. I would encourage everyone to attend, its just too great to miss. Never have truer words ever been spoken about Brodhead than: "You go the first time for the airplanes and you keep going back for the people". The first time it is all inspiring to see the great workmanship and to photograph so many inspiring works of art in hand made airplane but to meet the builders the personalities and even the builders of fame like televisions Michael Cuy of DVD and restoration fame, Frank Pavliga Barnstormer extraordinaire Doc Mosher indescribable leader and Dan Helsper keeper of the Bernard Pietenpol lost papers not to mention the inimitable John Hofmann. I could go on but you'll have to come and experience it for yourself, Brodhead is not a place its an adventure that only comes around once a year and well worth the price of admission. I hope to see you there, before you arrive I suggest you get familiar with The Great Waldo Pepper as you may run into to him or his likeness several times during the weekend share a laugh and an reply if you are able to muster one in time or in passing. Bill, Just a tip for future reference, as you progress with your project. The plans don't really provide many dimensions for gussets, but it may be helpful to know that the "extra" gusset material really doesn't do anything for you, other than add weight. When determining the size of a gusset like the one pictured, there's no need to go past the edges of the pieces being joined. See the red lines in the attached picture for reference. But, like others have said, in this case, just shift your capstrip over to the edge of your gusset. If you're very careful, you COULD trim away the excess gusset, but there's a very real risk of cutting into the Spruce sticks, and THAT would be a bad idea. Bill C. (not you... a Different Bill C.) Thanks to everyone. I would definitely like to come to Brodhead, but I'm not sure my finances can stand it this year. I have been doing A&P school for the last year and a half, and my wife is getting a little anxious about supporting us both now I'm out of school. I do have a Hajjimobile to make the Hajj to various Mecca locations, so I'm not ruling it out this year, yet. I also fly ultralight gliders at The Point of the Mountain in Utah, which is known worldwide as a Mecca for hang glider and paraglider pilots, which is why the Hajjimobile has its name. I've been lurking the list for several months now, and have figured out that being Markle-esque is sometimes necessary when you are associated with Pitenpol folks. You and I have a LOT in common! I love gliders/sailplanes and you have obviously done a lot of soaring in hang gliders. There is at least one paraglider on this list that just might be soaring the north shore (Hiwaii) as I type this.... There are several Pietenpols/Projects in the SLC area. Very nice people you'll want to get together with. Something we DON'T have in common is your piano playing...but that IS something I would definitely like to hear more about! :-) jm -----Original Message----- >From: GliderMike <glidermikeg@yahoo.com> >Sent: May 20, 2010 10:52 AM >To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com >Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: plans > > >Thanks to everyone. Mike: Welcome to the list. You will want to know that NOTHING you see on this list is bad information - - sometimes just slightly warped. By the way, let me encourage you to join the ranks of the Crank Snappin' Corvair Society (CS) and don't go haring off after one of those ancient A or B relics or, even worse, some unimaginative engine made for aircraft. You need something with Pizzaz and Mo Power! "Corvair" rules the Pietenpol skies and nothing can touch us - - nothing I tell you! (Sorry Honey I forgot to take my medication this morning. I'll be good.) Stinemetze N328X (one of these days) do not archive

Wouldn't it be better to go slightly wider than the red square, along the line of edge distance with rivets? When I did Airframe stuff in school, my class got screwed out of the stick and rag stuff, so I don't know. Our instructor had a composites project he thought was more important, so we got zip on stick and rag. I think I was the only one in the class that had any interest in stick and rag. I'll get plenty building my Piet. I would agree Bill added extra weight that doesn't get him anything but a couple of pounds of extra weight if he did that on the whole airframe. :D -------- Long flights, smooth air, and soft landings, GliderMike, aka Mike Glasgow Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=298403#298403
