Resorcinol glue is the only "certified" adhesive, i.e. approved by the FAA
for use on certified aircraft. Since you are building an experimental
aircraft you are not limited to just that adhesive. Epoxies are commonly
used, with T-88 and West Systems epoxies being popular. You could use
something like Raka epoxy, but that epoxy requires a very complicated
testing process for joint strength involving soaking, burning, smashing, and
tractor weights.....it's outlined in the archives. ;)
Resorcinol or epoxies both work well and strong, beautiful Piets have been
      built with both.

Join the EAA. Despite the arguable "watering down" of the organization over
the years they are still the go-to resource for homebuilders. Avail yourself
of the Tech Counselor program (there is at least one in Brodhead). There's a
fair amount of information on the website in the Members area, including the
entire Sport Aviation archives. Join a local EAA chapter; 431 at Brodhead is
      a good one.

Barnstormers.com can be a good free classified resource. We found a low-time
A-65 there for a decent price. Also, as mentioned above, join the local EAA
chapter. Attend meetings, get to know people and get known...many times
there is stuff available locally that you can find through word of mouth.
Don't rush into buying an engine just because it's available; make sure it's
a good buy. While the "want" may be great, the "need" is most likely quite a
ways off since you haven't even begun to build yet. Additionally, there are
a fair amount of A-65s in circulation...it's not like you're searching for a
Lenape Papoose to power your Piet. If you keep your eyes and ears open
you'll find a good candidate before you actually have the need for it.

Enjoy your honeymoon. If your flight to Italy happens to take you over New
Brunswick, Canada make sure and give a wave and shed a tear for a fellow
lover of the blue who's loved ones have tragically mixed up priorities....

      Welcome back Mike!

      To answer your questions:

Mike Cuy does still sell his videos.

Most guys seem to us T-88 epoxy. Some use West Systems but it is much
thinner and runs a lot. Resourcinol is a great old standby if you keep your
joints tight. There are certainly others but these seem to be the biggies

Call your local FAA office and track down your areas inspector and contact
him/her. They tend to be very helpful and appreciate advance contact. They
can send you their guidelines and paperwork. Basically however, keep lots
of documentation to prove you actually did the work yourself, and keep your
receipts to show what materials you used. I didn't have to show any of
these things, but each inspector is different. It really is a pretty simple
process. No inspection is required until you're finished.

There are a lot of engine parts on barnstormers.com and always ck out other
type websites like flybaby and luscombe etc.

      Good luck!

I had an A65 that I took off my Air Camper but I sold it
already. Stick around... they turn up from time to time.

Also, there is a 1/2 scale Air Camper under construction
here in central TX at the moment. I have pix and can
upload them to the file sharing page if anyone is interested.
Fuselage and tail feathers are complete, wing is under
construction. It will be painted identical to 41CC.

We build mounts for some pretty big planes and tig weld them. We stress
relieve them. We do it in a kind of dark place and bring the weldment to a
dull red color and then let it cool slow. It is best to keep it in any
fixure that you have other wise it could deform.

I asked asked a couple different PhD metallurgists working at the Lincoln
and Miller welding tents at Oshkosh and probably a dozen "expert" welders
(including the Sport Air workshop welding class instructor who welds for an
indy racing team in his spare time). Majority opinion - no need for it with
      TIG.

Best way to answer the question for yourself is to do multiple tests
welding identical parts with and without (kind of like gluing wood samples
to test your epoxy). And do destructive testing. I did this in welding class
to prove to myself stress relieving is not needed (and to prove my own
      welding capabilities to myself).

      Hello all,

I'm a long time fan of the Pete. I used to subscribe to the list over a
decade ago and dreamed about building one. In the meantime, life
intervened. But, this year, when a few Light Sports started showing up
at the local FBOs (finally!), I took up training again and decided I
would get my certificate this time no matter what (first flew when I was
14, so it's been a while coming). I'm about finished (just doing the
checkride rehearsals), and it's time to get serious about building my
own plane and so I subscribed to the list again and have been trying to
      recover all my old research.

I know there are a number of Petes in TX. One fella I knew was building
one near Taylor a decade ago. I was flying a few weeks ago out of KGTU
when I saw a brown one over by the pumps. I had my instructor with me,
and she was late for her next lesson, or I'd have pulled over and chased
the fella down and found out where he lived. I haven't seen him or it
      before or since.

KGTU is my home airport. If there are any Petes in the central TX area,
I'd love to hear from you. I know about Oscar, in SA, who is a frequent
and helpful contributor to the list. Anyone near Austin or Killeen?

      Hi Gang,

Here is a link to some photos of the new buildings near Puryear, TN. http:
      //s564.photobucket.com/albums/ss83/dhelsper/Tennessee%20Quonset%20Hut%20Co
nstruction%20July%202010/ You can see the airstrip in a few of the pics.
My family (myself, wife, and three sons and friend) did this construction
from 7/1 to 7/13. It was mass confusion at the beginning, but we got the
hang of it eventually. After we get settled down there (it may take some
time) I plan to host a Piet fly-in event. The airstrip is shown on the St
      . Louis Sectional as "Oliver".

Now I am home, and can get back to getting my Piet ready for Brodhead.

build process, that's brodhead and you're in luck if you can get to Wi or
Chicago by noon July 23 I can get ya a ride to Brodhead, that is if you're
serious about the build. If not we'll just sit around consuming adult

You may want to contact Mr. Brown, Earl Brown who is planning on doing
something similar. I am sure it will depend on timing and other logistical
issues, who's bringing the beer, what kind, bottle or can all that important

It was very nice to have met Mr. Brown, perhaps one day we shall get the

      Phil,
Kevin Purtee has his plane based at KGTU, in a hangar near the control tower.
This is likely NOT a good time for a visit, for he will be leaving at the end
of the week for WI. His is a good model for you, though, a classic and well
      done.
I have a project in my garage a couple exits south of the airport exit-- 4 miles
by air, 11 by ground-- off Hwy. 29 west of Georgetown. I'd be happy to show
      it to you.
There is a completed Piet at the Waco chapter's (EAA 59) hangar, McGregor (belonging
to Boyce Hardiman). You may whish to check out their Saturday breakfasts
and either fly up or drive to see it.
There is also a completed Piet I have never seen, belonging to Kevin McDonald,
as I recall, at Kittie Hill airport. He has begun flying it again after a long
      lapse, as I understand.
         Pls reply.
