Randy, go to your local hardware store, Home Depot or lawnmower shop, even
O'Rieleys auto parts has some lawn mower parts.
A 6 x 6.00 tube is a common lawn tractor size. Should cost around $8.00. Th

| Subject: | Corvair valve covers |

Well, well. My faith in aviators and experimenters
has been restored! After posting an email about how
I had loaned one of my cast aluminum Air Camper Corvair
valve covers to Gary Gower down in Guadalajara and
never hearing back from him, last night I DID hear
back from him and was offered a complete explanation
of what happened with the valve cover and that it
is still in his hands, safe and sound. My apologies
to Gary and to the aviation community for casting
doubt on the good character of any one of us who
builds, flies, and dreams. I have every confidence
that I will be getting my valve cover back.

I have found very, very few "bad apples" in experimental
aviation. To the contrary, I am continually surprised
when complete strangers offer me parts, materials,
and assistance of every type... many times at no cost.
Gary is just another one of "us", and I apologize for
any negative comment that I may have made about his
      character or honesty.

Now to find someone who can source these cast covers
for us and turn out an equally nice, non-porous,
      lightweight, and affordable casting...

| Subject: | dyslexia and trim tabs... |

Getting ready for my first trip to Brodhead, and first cross country
in 24 years for that matter, though I've got a150 hours on N7035N. The
first flight in 2004 was so out of trim I'd have crashed it, but I did
have the sense to have a friend test fly it. Since then I've been
tweaking wing washout, vertical stabilizer, elevator shims, etc. It's
been flying really well but to hold a heading for hours I decided I'd
better break down and put on a rudder trim tab (hate to add the ounce
      back there)....

Put on said trim tab last night and took it for a hop. Proved two
things. 1. The rudder trim tab really works, and 2. It would work much
better if I had bent it the right direction. Oh blessed dyslexia. This
evening I try again. My right leg would have probably fallen off with
      that first setting.

I've seen aircraft projects being trailered and a lot of the time they are being
towed tail first. Any reason or advantage to doing it that way?

I checked with both aircraft spruce and wicks on wood kits for the pietenpol.
There is $750 difference in price with wicks being higher. I am guessing it is
because aircraft spruce is fininshed on two sides and requires cutting to the
correct dimensions while wicks is already precut to the final dimensions? If
I have the money is this the best way to go?

      Mike,

FYI=85last year I stayed in Beloit, drove to Brodhead each day. First
      day I
tried to locate the airport by using my GPS query for
      =93airports=94=85and nothing
      came up for Brodhead!

It=92s such a sprawling metropolis, though, I drove around aimlessly for
      all
      of 10 minutes before I found =93Airport Road.=94 Being a mentally acute
      airplane

...depends on how many $$$ you want to save. I used locally acquired Poplar
and bought ALL of my wood (less plywood and hardwood) for less than $300.
Poplar is very pleasant smelling wood to spend hours cutting up...

I checked with both aircraft spruce and wicks on wood kits for the
pietenpol. There is $750 difference in price with wicks being higher. I am
guessing it is because aircraft spruce is fininshed on two sides and
requires cutting to the correct dimensions while wicks is already precut to
the final dimensions? If I have the money is this the best way to go?

I have been buying spruce for my Jungster over the past 5 years or so, and
I think wicks has better looking spruce.- However in the past year or two
wicks prices have gone up considerably highr than A.S.S.' prices.-

Last turn on the left at the South end of town and follow the paved road.
Just look for the new sign per the attached photo. (Obviously the

My gosh... $750 for cut lengths? No thanks. Are you sure that they don't also
include the rib capstrip and perhaps some plywood or something? I haven't studied
the Wicks package, so I can't make a fair comparison.

I can say this... except for one problem that I found, which Aircraft Spruce promptly
took care of, the AS&S wood package is excellent stuff. I've had several
compliments on the materials. As for pre-cut... I think I'd prefer the rough
lengths as it allows me to cut/sand to my dimensions for a snug fit, plus I
get little drop pieces for use elsewhere.

Again, I can't speak to the Wicks package since I don't know what all they include,
but for the money, the AS&S stuff is hard to beat, unless of course you have
      proper materials locally.

      ---------------

I just took a look at Wicks... they have their packages split up differently.
The wing kit does include capstrip for ribs (approx. $150 from AS&S), but the
materials are not pre-cut to length. In fact, the spars are full length (28'),
so they will have to be cut a couple of times in order to build.

I'm not sure what the best deal is... but given the price comparison (almost double),
I think you would be happy with the AS&S package. Some may argue that
scrounging up boards and cutting your own material is the way to go... and several
have done that for a few hundred bucks, but if you don't have the proper
materials available then it is kind of hard to do that.

I've done it both ways and wouldn't tow it tail-first again. I almost ruined my
rudder horn when the control lock got blasted off by a passing 18-wheeler and
the rudder kicked over hard. Only advantage I could see of towing tail-first
might be better visibility out the rear-view mirror of the tow vehicle, but
      that's hardly worth it.

The airplane was made to fly through the air nose-first, after all.

Don't do it the way Kevin did his... remember that the Corvair rotates opposite

You will want to be looking for the correct town, so make sure to keep
      an eye out for BRODhead.

Just do a Google Map search for "Brodhead Airport, Brodhead WI" and you
will find it. Map your route from there...

| Subject: | Re: Cloudcars Prop |

Speaking of Cloudcars props, we find ourselves in possession of one more than we
need. I was impressed by the prop on Gene from TN's Piet, so we ordered a scimitar
from Jay. We ended up selling the project and buying....Gene's Piet, so
now we have an extra prop. :P

The prop is for an A-65 (I think it would be suitable for an A-75 as well). Cosmetically
it looks similar to Jeff Boatright's prop, with the darker stain and
white tips. I am out of town for business, so I can't send pics now. I will be
back on Sunday and can provide them then. It's a brand new, never been used
prop....we just don't have a need for it now, and it's an expensive wall hanging.
      :P

If anyone coming to Brodhead is interested we can bring it with. I think we would
be asking upper $700s for it....I'll have to check and see what exactly we
paid for it. If there is no expressed interest I don't think we'll try to fit
it in the car. If anyone thinks they might be interested let me know, and I will
send you some pics when I get back home.

      Have a good day,

he made for you Ford guys, I asked for a "scimitar" shaped prop for a Corvair
which he had not attempted before. It took a little while to create the
new shape but here are the results as they came from the FedEx truck. I hope
to mount it on a friend's Corvair shortly to see how it turns for static RPM as
I don't have an engine mounted yet. The prop measures 69" and is stamped 30
      P. I know that a 30" pitch from one manufacturer doesn't always equate to a
30" pitch from a different source so am really curious how this prop will function.

Fly it on up here to McPherson, KS. and I'll be glad to help you mount it
on your bird for a try-out. It's a standard William Wynne hub which I
believe he calls an S.A.E. 1. I do know that the center hole still has to

There were a total of 4 showers last time I was there. The original 2 and 2

Unless they have upgraded the hot water you most likely will have a warm to
      cold shower.

And those modern xray systems (like I have to go through every week at the airport!)
even show a small piece of paper...I won't be able to hide a prop...

Hey wait...I'll be driving to Kansas...hmmmmmm

I can think of SO many different directions I could go with this and most would
get me in a LOT of trouble...ok, I'll control myself....

But I'm still.....Looking forward to BRODHEAD!!!!

jm-just ordered a new water cooled TIG torch so I can finish up my aluminum tank....

      Thanks Gary,

Well actually, let's not put it on the Corvair list until after it's been here
for a while...I would prefer it end up on a Piet....

And it's not black or gold...probably a pretty old one but hopefully age hasn't
      hurt it... :-)

It's bare aluminum. Maybe I'll just go ahead and take it to Brodhead and let someone
else figure out if it has any value or not. I just hate seeing it NOT
      get used....

This morning I finally got some videos (thanks to my wife, Karen) of the
smoke system I installed on my Pietenpol this spring. Check it out at:

I won't be bringing my Pietenpol to Brodhead this year, but instead will
bring Ryan Mueller's newly acquired Pietenpol that was owned by Gene
Pennington in Camden, Tennessee. Gene sold the Piet to Ryan in April and
has already bought a single-seat Kolb Slingshot so he can still fly "low and
      slow".

If the weather is good, one week from today I'll be chugging along somewhere
over acres of corn in Illinois, with Randy Bush and his Corvair powered
Pietenpol on my wingtip. I can hardly wait.

might smoke 'em, but only if I'm downwind from everyone... ya know, just
      to keep the mosquitos away.

      Way to GO Jack !

Now we have three smokin' Piets with General Smoke Chuck Gantzer, you, and
myself. I sure hope that Jeff Boatright is at the ready with his
video camera again (even tho your smoking Piet won't be there this year) to
capture and post some of the Brodhead action on YouTube like he
      did last year.

Thanks to Jeff and Jim M.'s video posts and a few others of you it got me t
hru a Cleveland winter without having to seek counseling or therapy.

Oddly enough, Tom, I'll be flying through KS on Monday (with God's permission,
of course). McPherson's a bit out of the way, though. Sure you can't just bring
it to Brodhead? I'm just thinkin'...

      It really is georgeous.

Okay Dan....that makes it official. You must be a decent guy. I brought two
      Lino (Actually they
are called Zino's) Shorty cigars to Brodhead but didn't puff on them til I was
      walking along the Fox
River near the dorms in Oshkosh one beautiful evening. I figured I would get
      booted out of Brodhead
if I smoked cigars AND played my accordion but on the up side of all that, there
      would have been few
skeeters and no mice nearby the place had that happened !

Unfortunately, I won't make Brodhead this year. My wife had some
medical issues starting in May that are now, thankfully, under
control. But, she's not traveling anywhere for a while and I'm not
      goin' if she ain't goin'.

Hopefully someone else can take videos and upload them daily. I'm sure
anybody's hand will be steadier than mine!

Would love to but... I spent all my traveling funds going to Chicago and
purchasing Ryan Mueller's Corvair engine. We took a side trip to Brodhead
on the way back just so I could vicariously participate in what you guys
will be experiencing in a few days.

One other possibility exists, however. I have a brother who lives in San
Antonio who I will need to visit one of these days. If you are not too
far off the I-35 route we might be able to make it a two-day trip with a
stopover in your vicinity. Again, just a possibility.

      Thanks,
      Tom Stinemetze

Oddly enough, Tom, I'll be flying through KS on Monday (with God's
permission, of course). McPherson's a bit out of the way, though. Sure
you can't just bring it to Brodhead? I'm just thinkin'...

Let's just say that it was in the $600 range. Price varies by options
chosen and I opted for: two different woods, scimitar shape with 30" pitch
(required new pattern), fiberglass tip protection, and pre-drilled hub. I
could also have had full leading edge protection and various tip paint
schemes. If you give Jay Anderson a call he will be glad to quote a
specific price and time frame to you based on what you want.

Nice, very nice! Will you be using a safety shaft? I'm sure a 66 X 33 is also
      possible?

This morning I finally got some videos (thanks to my wife, Karen) of the
smoke system I installed on my Pietenpol this spring. Check it out at:
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DTmKApOPyw

I won=99t be bringing my Pietenpol to Brodhead this year, but instea
d will bring Ryan Mueller=99s newly acquired Pietenpol that was owne
d by Gene Pennington in Camden, Tennessee. Gene sold the Piet to Ryan in
April and has already bought a single-seat Kolb Slingshot so he can still
       fly =9Clow and slow=9D.

If the weather is good, one week from today I=99ll be chugging along
somewhere over acres of corn in Illinois, with Randy Bush and his Corvair
powered Pietenpol on my wingtip. I can hardly wait.

I am lucky. My kid likes to fly. She has been up with Jack Phillps in his
Piet at Brodhead a couple of years back. She will be 15 next week so if
she wants she can get her chance. The Cub is back in good shape and we we
re up a couple of times this week. She likes to take the camera along so
here are a few pictures from Monday night. I am thinking of painting "IT
GIRL OF THE SKIES" next to the front seat. I swear last year she was just
       5. Time files. It is amazing how fast they grow.

As much as I love Piets, one of my original loves was
the KR2, and it still is. Talk about a short-legged
airplane though! The originals, with stubby retracts,
sit pretty low to the ground. Anyway, if you think
there is something homely about short legs, perhaps
you need to revisit a short-legged airplane, like this one:

      http://www.krnet.org/

Just scroll down a tad to see Joe Horton's Corvair-powered
KR2-S, and a fine complement to it.

      For a really beautiful LONG-legged KR2-S, my all-time
favorite is Jeff Scott's C85-powered one, here:

      http://jscott.comlu.com/KR/KRmods.html

Yes, Jeff's is considered to be a LONG-legged KR, one of
only two with legs this long.

| Subject: | Re: Piets in Texas |

Hi all, I'm new to the Pietenpol group. I live in San Marcos (KHYI) and am starting
my Air Camper project. Last fall I ordered my plans and this spring I rescued
my power plant from a rusting '65 Monza south of Bastrop. Also last year
I joined the Commemorative Air Force Centex Wing and Yellow Rose Squadron, which
started my appreciation of vintage aircraft. It only took one ride in our Jap
Kate to propel my love of flying!

My Piet project first started out as a team effort with my brother who lives in
Round Rock after he told me about Mr. Pietenpol and the Air Camper. I decided
to go ahead and purchase the plans. Soon after we began looking for engines.
Since then it appeared to me that what with work and being a family man and also
donating time to the CAF that the Piet project was mine completely, oh darn
.[Wink] Also being a member of the CAF, I have a great resource at my disposal
what with our A&P and the skillful talents of our volunteers.

Presently I've got my Corvair engine tore down and am in the gathering parts stage.
My crank after getting cleaned up and checked for cracks is with a friend
who owns a machine shop being modified with the safety shaft. Soon I plan to
go shopping for spruce. Is the Air Camper kit that Aircraft Spruce sells a good
buy or should I look elsewhere? I look forward to sharing my project with you
      all.

I'm happy with the quality of the Aircraft Spruce wood package. If you have a
good source of lumber, others will tell you how you can save a pile of bucks by
cutting your own stock, but if you want a good quality package that includes
most of the required wood materials, the Aircraft Spruce isn't a bad idea at
      all.

The wood package does not include the required capstrip for building ribs or any
of the plywood you will need. I think I've got a total of ~$1600 in all of
my wood products, but it is good stuff, and I haven't had to go hunting for it.

Perhaps someone else will chime in to inform you on which alternatives you might
be able to find at the lumber yard.

I talked with William Wynne at SnF and he knows the guy that makes the cast Air
