My faith in aviators and experimenters has been restored! After posting an email about how I had loaned one of my cast aluminum Air Camper Corvair valve covers to Gary Gower down in Guadalajara and never hearing back from him, last night I DID hear back from him and was offered a complete explanation of what happened with the valve cover and that it is still in his hands, safe and sound. My apologies to Gary and to the aviation community for casting doubt on the good character of any one of us who builds, flies, and dreams. I have every confidence that I will be getting my valve cover back. I have found very, very few "bad apples" in experimental aviation. To the contrary, I am continually surprised when complete strangers offer me parts, materials, and assistance of every type... many times at no cost. Gary is just another one of "us", and I apologize for any negative comment that I may have made about his character or honesty. Now to find someone who can source these cast covers for us and turn out an equally nice, non-porous, lightweight, and affordable casting... From: Dale Mccleskey Getting ready for my first trip to Brodhead, and first cross country in 24 years for that matter, though I've got a150 hours on N7035N. The first flight in 2004 was so out of trim I'd have crashed it, but I did have the sense to have a friend test fly it. Since then I've been tweaking wing washout, vertical stabilizer, elevator shims, etc. It's been flying really well but to hold a heading for hours I decided I'd better break down and put on a rudder trim tab (hate to add the ounce back there).... Put on said trim tab last night and took it for a hop. Proved two things. 1. The rudder trim tab really works, and 2. It would work much better if I had bent it the right direction. Oh blessed dyslexia. This evening I try again. My right leg would have probably fallen off with that first setting. No thanks. Are you sure that they don't also include the rib capstrip and perhaps some plywood or something? I haven't studied the Wicks package, so I can't make a fair comparison. I can say this... except for one problem that I found, which Aircraft Spruce promptly took care of, the AS&S wood package is excellent stuff. I've had several compliments on the materials. As for pre-cut... I think I'd prefer the rough lengths as it allows me to cut/sand to my dimensions for a snug fit, plus I get little drop pieces for use elsewhere. Again, I can't speak to the Wicks package since I don't know what all they include, but for the money, the AS&S stuff is hard to beat, unless of course you have proper materials locally. --------------- I just took a look at Wicks... they have their packages split up differently. The wing kit does include capstrip for ribs (approx. $150 from AS&S), but the materials are not pre-cut to length. In fact, the spars are full length (28'), so they will have to be cut a couple of times in order to build. I'm not sure what the best deal is... but given the price comparison (almost double), I think you would be happy with the AS&S package. Some may argue that scrounging up boards and cutting your own material is the way to go... and several have done that for a few hundred bucks, but if you don't have the proper materials available then it is kind of hard to do that. -------- Mark Chouinard Finishing up Wings - Working on Center Section Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=304904#304904 ________________________________ Message 16 ____________________________________ Time: 08:05:45 AM PST US From: "Gary Boothe" Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Cloudcars Prop Beautiful, Tom! Cosmetically it looks similar to Jeff Boatright's prop, with the darker stain and white tips. I am out of town for business, so I can't send pics now. I will be back on Sunday and can provide them then. It's a brand new, never been used prop....we just don't have a need for it now, and it's an expensive wall hanging. :P If anyone coming to Brodhead is interested we can bring it with. I think we would be asking upper $700s for it....I'll have to check and see what exactly we paid for it. If there is no expressed interest I don't think we'll try to fit it in the car. Talk about a short-legged airplane though! The originals, with stubby retracts, sit pretty low to the ground. Anyway, if you think there is something homely about short legs, perhaps you need to revisit a short-legged airplane, like this one: http://www.krnet.org/ Just scroll down a tad to see Joe Horton's Corvair-powered KR2-S, and a fine complement to it. For a really beautiful LONG-legged KR2-S, my all-time favorite is Jeff Scott's C85-powered one, here: http://jscott.comlu.com/KR/KRmods.html Yes, Jeff's is considered to be a LONG-legged KR, one of only two with legs this long. do not archive Oscar Zuniga Air Camper NX41CC San Antonio, TX mailto: taildrags@hotmail.com website at http://www.flysquirrel.net _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy is not the too busy. I live in San Marcos (KHYI) and am starting my Air Camper project. Last fall I ordered my plans and this spring I rescued my power plant from a rusting '65 Monza south of Bastrop. Also last year I joined the Commemorative Air Force Centex Wing and Yellow Rose Squadron, which started my appreciation of vintage aircraft. It only took one ride in our Jap Kate to propel my love of flying! My Piet project first started out as a team effort with my brother who lives in Round Rock after he told me about Mr. Pietenpol and the Air Camper. I decided to go ahead and purchase the plans. Soon after we began looking for engines. Since then it appeared to me that what with work and being a family man and also donating time to the CAF that the Piet project was mine completely, oh darn .[Wink] Also being a member of the CAF, I have a great resource at my disposal what with our A&P and the skillful talents of our volunteers. Presently I've got my Corvair engine tore down and am in the gathering parts stage. My crank after getting cleaned up and checked for cracks is with a friend who owns a machine shop being modified with the safety shaft. Soon I plan to go shopping for spruce. Is the Air Camper kit that Aircraft Spruce sells a good buy or should I look elsewhere? I look forward to sharing my project with you all. If you have a good source of lumber, others will tell you how you can save a pile of bucks by cutting your own stock, but if you want a good quality package that includes most of the required wood materials, the Aircraft Spruce isn't a bad idea at all. The wood package does not include the required capstrip for building ribs or any of the plywood you will need. I think I've got a total of ~$1600 in all of my wood products, but it is good stuff, and I haven't had to go hunting for it. Perhaps someone else will chime in to inform you on which alternatives you might be able to find at the lumber yard. -------- Mark Chouinard Finishing up Wings - Working on Center Section Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=305021#305021 ________________________________ Message 71 ____________________________________ Time: 07:55:13 PM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Smoke On!
