Hi Oscar,
Since I have a battery to power the radio, transponder, intercom and
Ah-Oooooga horn, it made sense to use a pump system. So for smoke, I press
a button on the instrument panel which energizes a windshield washer pump on
the firewall, injecting smoke oil into a port welded onto the exhaust stack
of the # 1 cylinder.
The only thing unique about my system is the tank. I used an outboard motor
portable fuel tank (3.5 gallons), with the typical outboard quick disconnect
fuel line and squeeze primer bulb. That way, when I need to carry a
passenger, I can just disconnect the line and pull the tank out of the front
cockpit. Installing it is simple - fill the tank with smoke oil, close the
cap, position the tank on the front floorboard between the rudder pedals and
secure with a bungee cord, open the vent, connect the quick disconnect, give
the primer bulb a couple of squeezes and you're ready to go.
For smoke oil I took a tip from a recent Sport Aviation article on
skywriting and burn used automatic transmission fluid. I tried to buy some
Texaco Canopus 13 oil like the big boys (Sean D Tucker and Mike Cuy) use,
but you have to buy it by the 55 gallon drum, for $582 a drum. Used ATF oil
is free. And as you can see from the video, it makes nice thick smoke.

I have past copies of the extensively cross-referenced directory that Doc Mosher
published for a number of years. I don't know if he still does it but you might
ask before you duplicate his efforts. Not only did he have the entire FAA
database but also many international entries. The user could reference owners,
registration numbers, states/countries and probably a couple of other ways that
I've forgotten. It was a lot more inclusive than just asking for voluntary data
on the Matronics site.

Just a curiosity question.....Looking back at your notes, what did your uncovered

with center section, engine and prop. With the cast iron head, mine came in at
503#.

One of my finest memories of Brodhead '08 was sitting on the edge of the
runway Sat night as the sun went down, watching Pietenpols fly by with a
cold adult beverage in one hand and a fine Dominican Cigar in the
other. I was careful to be downwind of anybody that might object. A
truly sublime moment.

Jack; your experience parallels mine. I investigated purchase of the Texaco product
since I can purchase oil at bulk rates, but I wondered what I would ever
do with 55 gal. of the stuff. My thought at the time was that I could decant
it out from the drum into 5 gal. containers and then sell those to other smokers.
Much easier to deal with that quantity. BTW, Shell now also has airshow
smoke oil available
http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/AeroshellSmokeOil.pdf
, but probably no better price than the Canopus oil. You sure can't beat used
ATF; that's a good source. Here at my work, I could get practically unlimited
quantities of that.

Also it would help if you would add your info to your emails. That would be a

Don:
Boy can I relate to your story!! My little boy just turned six too=2C and
he loves to fly! On July 4th=2C his only request was to go flying in our T
ravel Air. Never done a long trip with him yet=2C though. He wanted to com
e to Brodhead last year=2C but I did not think he would be entertained enou
gh. He did come to Oshkosh. This year=2C I still do not think he is quite
old enough to appreciate Brodhead. Again=2C he is coming to Oshkosh. Nex
t year=2C though=2C our Pietenpol should be flying and I will probably be h
ard pressed to leave him behind . . . nor do I plan to!

I also would like to be included:
Jon Coxwell, Remsen NY (just inside the Adirondack Park). A still practicing architect
for too many years now trying to be an aeronautical engineer in my spare
time.
N594E GN-1 with some piet mods. I am building, rebuilding, modifying a project
I bought several years ago on e-bay. Projected bumped around from owner to
owner in Ontario and then traveled to Iowa. Where I picked it up and trailered
it back to NY. I estimate 75% complete with 75% to go. Just now starting to
make progress on new work rather than rebuilding. All woodwork is done, one
wing and tail featheres covered. Engine is a Corvair partly modified to Wynn's
standards, run for 5 hrs, but will need to be taken down and more mods made
to Wynn's new standards.

Larry,
Thanks for pointing that out. I like several others didn't look closely at the

Guess I should ask.

I hope to see and meet some of you at Brodhead. Weather is looking pretty good
so I think I will fire up my newly acquired Suzuki Burgman (scooter) and head
west for a 1000 mile (one way) adventure. This is the closest I can get to
a Piet flight right now. About the same speed but I will be dodging cars instead
of crows and sparrows. I hope to be at the field sometime Friday with my
list of questions and a camera.

Fly-I
Great stories. My kids are all adult now but I took them to Oshkosh when they
were young. We flew in in a Mooney and camped under the wing. We had to keep
them on a leash to be sure they didn't wander where they should not be. My daughter
still talks about some of our trips as being real high points of her growing
up. I hope I have the chance to take my grand kids or my partners grand
kids up in the GN-1. I don't know, however, some of the younger generation
parents are pretty protective.

Fly-I
I have many fond memories of brodhead fly-in's with my grandpa, made it to quite
a few in the late 80's early 90's, it's even where I "flew by myself" for the
first time! At the Pietenpol flyin none the less, grandpa used to have the quansenhut
(sp?) hanger up there for many years too, really hoping to make it next
year

Did I miss something about another list? I know at one time Doc had a
printed list. John Hoffman had a great list with pictures until the HACKERS
hit it. If we need one I would be willing to post some sort of form in
Excel or Word format on my site, which could be downloaded, filled in then
emailed back to me. Again, if I can figure it out I could post the updated
listing on my site. Or maybe we would want to keep it less public and I
could email it to anyone that requested it. Your thoughts?
Thanks,

Subject: | Cont. A-75 Run-On |
Guys,
Had something new happen tonight on the GN-1 I purchased last month. I flew for
about 1-3/4 hour, it was about 82 degree's out. When I landed and shut the engine
off - it just sat their and "dieseled" on me. I don't have a fuel mixture
cutoff installed on this plane - and it takes about 4-5 minutes of idling before
it will shut down after fuel valve shutoff - so I sat and played with the
throttle and occasionally flipped one or both mags on/off again (to see if I
had a P-lead issue). I didn't hear any difference in engine dieseling or run during
this play around period. It would almost shut off - just not quite...
When I was finally able to get it to quit after about 4 minutes or so (I think
it finally ran out of fuel), I chocked the wheels, made sure mags were off, and
tried to hand prop it. The bugger tried to start on me.
I run premium BP auto fuel (no ethanol mix).
If memory serves me, I've got the Marvel MA3 on it (still learning this stuff).
I've got about 8.5 hours on this plane now, this is the first I've seen this happen.
Any comments on troubleshooting, I'd sure appreciate it.
