Hi Oscar, Since I have a battery to power the radio, transponder, intercom and Ah-Oooooga horn, it made sense to use a pump system. So for smoke, I press a button on the instrument panel which energizes a windshield washer pump on the firewall, injecting smoke oil into a port welded onto the exhaust stack of the # 1 cylinder. The only thing unique about my system is the tank. I used an outboard motor portable fuel tank (3.5 gallons), with the typical outboard quick disconnect fuel line and squeeze primer bulb. That way, when I need to carry a passenger, I can just disconnect the line and pull the tank out of the front cockpit. Installing it is simple - fill the tank with smoke oil, close the cap, position the tank on the front floorboard between the rudder pedals and secure with a bungee cord, open the vent, connect the quick disconnect, give the primer bulb a couple of squeezes and you're ready to go. For smoke oil I took a tip from a recent Sport Aviation article on skywriting and burn used automatic transmission fluid. I tried to buy some Texaco Canopus 13 oil like the big boys (Sean D Tucker and Mike Cuy) use, but you have to buy it by the 55 gallon drum, for $582 a drum. Used ATF oil is free. And as you can see from the video, it makes nice thick smoke. From: "taildrags" Jack; your experience parallels mine. I investigated purchase of the Texaco product since I can purchase oil at bulk rates, but I wondered what I would ever do with 55 gal. of the stuff. My thought at the time was that I could decant it out from the drum into 5 gal. containers and then sell those to other smokers. Much easier to deal with that quantity. BTW, Shell now also has airshow smoke oil available http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/AeroshellSmokeOil.pdf , but probably no better price than the Canopus oil. You sure can't beat used ATF; that's a good source. My kids are all adult now but I took them to Oshkosh when they were young. We flew in in a Mooney and camped under the wing. We had to keep them on a leash to be sure they didn't wander where they should not be. My daughter still talks about some of our trips as being real high points of her growing up. I hope I have the chance to take my grand kids or my partners grand kids up in the GN-1. I don't know, however, some of the younger generation parents are pretty protective. At the Pietenpol flyin none the less, grandpa used to have the quansenhut (sp?) hanger up there for many years too, really hoping to make it next year Sent from my iPhone On Jul 16, 2010, at 6:06 PM, "coxwelljon" wrote: > > Great stories. I know at one time Doc had a printed list. John Hoffman had a great list with pictures until the HACKERS hit it. If we need one I would be willing to post some sort of form in Excel or Word format on my site, which could be downloaded, filled in then emailed back to me. Again, if I can figure it out I could post the updated listing on my site. Or maybe we would want to keep it less public and I could email it to anyone that requested it. Your thoughts? A-75 Run-On From: "ldmill" Guys, Had something new happen tonight on the GN-1 I purchased last month. I flew for about 1-3/4 hour, it was about 82 degree's out. When I landed and shut the engine off - it just sat their and "dieseled" on me. I don't have a fuel mixture cutoff installed on this plane - and it takes about 4-5 minutes of idling before it will shut down after fuel valve shutoff - so I sat and played with the throttle and occasionally flipped one or both mags on/off again (to see if I had a P-lead issue). I didn't hear any difference in engine dieseling or run during this play around period. It would almost shut off - just not quite... When I was finally able to get it to quit after about 4 minutes or so (I think it finally ran out of fuel), I chocked the wheels, made sure mags were off, and tried to hand prop it. The bugger tried to start on me. I run premium BP auto fuel (no ethanol mix). If memory serves me, I've got the Marvel MA3 on it (still learning this stuff). I've got about 8.5 hours on this plane now, this is the first I've seen this happen. Any comments on troubleshooting, I'd sure appreciate it.
