Boy can I relate to your story!! My little boy just turned six too, and he
loves to fly! On July 4th, his only request was to go flying in our Travel
Air. Never done a long trip with him yet, though. He wanted to come to
Brodhead last year, but I did not think he would be entertained enough. He
did come to Oshkosh. This year, I still do not think he is quite old enough
to appreciate Brodhead. Again, he is coming to Oshkosh. Next year, though,
our Pietenpol should be flying and I will probably be hard pressed to leave
him behind . . . nor do I plan to!

Brodhead, my son, Ryan, then 5 years old, went out to the car, buckled
himself in and said he was not getting out. He was almost devastated that he
couldn't go. At six years old now, I still don't think he's quite old enough
for the very long ride in the front pit all the way to Brodhead (600 and
some odd miles, I think). So, since I promised him last year that he could
go with me this year, we are driving. My three daughters on the other hand
opted out. They love to fly in it, but they aren't fanatics like the rest of
us!

Hello all,
Sorry to ask this question now while so many are busy packing or already
on their way to Brodhead, but I thought I'd throw it out there, anyway,
and don't have to be in a hurry for answers.
I've done some research, but would appreciate hearing what the hoary
heads on the list think as well.
I have the chance at a Piet project, but it's a short fuselage (already
built). I'm REALLY set on either an A-65 or a Corvair engine. I
understand that this might be an okay pairing, given the tail heaviness
of the design. I'm about 180-185 and will be flying passengers smaller
than me at all times, I'm pretty sure. Would a short fuselage work fine
in this scenario? Would it be better, if I'm set on those engines, to
build a longer fuselage myself?
Thanks for any help.
Phil

My Piet is a short fuselage with a corvair. I am 200+ and have had a 200+
passenger. The ROC was not great but ok. My wing sets about four inches
aft of vertical on the cabanes.

Phil,
Mike Cuy's Lindy-winning Pietenpol has a short fuselage and an A-65
Continental and flies very well indeed. I'm 200 lbs and have flown Mike's
plane (as well as my own A65 powered long fuselage Pietenpol). In some
respects I think the short fuse is better (it's lighter). I'd say go for
it.

Looking good, Chuck! Very nice looking shop. I'm expecting to see an award
winning Pietenpol coming out of such a shop.
Hopefully I can come by and see it firsthand after Brodhead. Maybe I can
come with Jim Markle - he's going to be in the area. I'm sure there's
something in that shop he can use.

Hey Guys,
I hope everyone going to Brodhead and Oshkosh has a great time! I hope to
make it next year.
I have started my project and wanted to relate my experiences to those
getting ready to start. I have completed six ribs and have seven, eight & 9
under construction.
1) I ordered my spruce from Wicks and I very pleased with their service
and quality of wood. I ordered cap strips at 60 inches and had them cut down
a 4 by 4 sheet of plywood to 4 by 2. I ordered enough wood to build about 19
ribs (it works out to 3.167 sixty-inch cap strips per rib). Shipping cost
was $27.37 plus $4.50 to crate the plywood. The math comes in about $11.15
per rib including shipping charges. That does not include T-88, which I
picked up at my local Woodcraft store. How do these numbers match up? Let us
know.
2) Homebuilder Hints on the EAA website have been a great help.
Invisible Glove protective hand coating is great stuff. I ordered mine from
Amazon - free shipping on orders over $25. I also used the EAA
recommendation for a bending jig, except I just cut mine out of 2x4 and it
works great. I am not steaming my wood, just soaking it in a water pipe
overnight and putting it in the bending jig. I am stapling my gussets. For
those of you who have an AC Moore craft store close by or you can order

staples at 50% off.
I have attached a couple of pictures of my shop and first rib.

Wow, totally agree! I don't know how anyone can work in such a clean shop but...maybe
it can be done.... :-)
I see maybe some signs of Norm Abrams' influence? (one of my personal heroes....)
And isn't it an amazing feeling holding those first few ribs? I love that part.
And yes, thanks for the inspiration!

quality of wood. I ordered cap strips at 60 inches and had them cut down a
4 by 4 sheet of plywood to 4 by 2. I ordered enough wood to build about 19 ribs
(it works out to 3.167 sixty-inch cap strips per rib). Shipping cost was $27.37
plus $4.50 to crate the plywood. The math comes in about $11.15 per rib including
shipping charges. That does not include T-88, which I picked up at my
local Woodcraft store. How do these numbers match up? Let us know.
>2) Homebuilder Hints on the EAA website have been a great help. Invisible
Glove protective hand coating is great stuff. I ordered mine from Amazon free
shipping on orders over $25. I also used the EAA recommendation for a bending
jig, except I just cut mine out of 2x4 and it works great. I am not steaming
my wood, just soaking it in a water pipe overnight and putting it in the bending
jig. I am stapling my gussets. For those of you who have an AC Moore craft
store close by or you can order online, they have 50% off coupons on their website.
I was able to get a good stapler for under $10 with the coupon. I also
plan to go back and get more staples at 50% off.

Tail control horn tabs to center them up on the main beams or am makeing
this more complicated than it really is. Steve
