Chuck, beautiful work! Be sure to send Chris Tracy progress photos so he can post on www.westcoastpiet.com <http://www.westcoastpiet.com/> . Jack DSM PS Is that your phone #, missing a number? _____ From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of CJ Borsuk Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2010 7:29 PM Subject: Pietenpol-List: Construction has begun! Hey Guys, I hope everyone going to Brodhead and Oshkosh has a great time! I hope to make it next year. I have started my project and wanted to relate my experiences to those getting ready to start. I have completed six ribs and have seven, eight & 9 under construction. 1) I ordered my spruce from Wicks and I very pleased with their service and quality of wood. I ordered cap strips at 60 inches and had them cut down a 4 by 4 sheet of plywood to 4 by 2. I ordered enough wood to build about 19 ribs (it works out to 3.167 sixty-inch cap strips per rib). Shipping cost was $27.37 plus $4.50 to crate the plywood. The math comes in about $11.15 per rib including shipping charges. That does not include T-88, which I picked up at my local Woodcraft store. How do these numbers match up? Let us know. 2) Homebuilder Hints on the EAA website have been a great help. Invisible Glove protective hand coating is great stuff. I ordered mine from Amazon - free shipping on orders over $25. I also used the EAA recommendation for a bending jig, except I just cut mine out of 2x4 and it works great. I am not steaming my wood, just soaking it in a water pipe overnight and putting it in the bending jig. I am stapling my gussets. For those of you who have an AC Moore craft store close by or you can order online, they have 50% off coupons on their website. I was able to get a good stapler for under $10 with the coupon. I also plan to go back and get more staples at 50% off. I have attached a couple of pictures of my shop and first rib. Chuck Borsuk 91-524-5398 Raleigh NC

I won't plan to post it to my site or any other. After I compile the information, I will make it available via email in some form; I'm thinking a Word, Excel or PDF doc might be the best. Wow Chuck... great looking shop indeed! And the assembly line you have set up... you will find that process to be very beneficial, as you probably already know from your obvious organizational skills. Like Jim said... those first few ribs are great. A real neat feeling to complete the first few pieces of your project. I'm looking forward to watching your progress. -------- Mark Chouinard Finishing up Wings - Working on Center Section Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=305419#305419

One suggestion - before taking down your rib making setup, make at least one extra rib for a wall hanging. I wish I had done that - now that I want one to hang up in my hangar I've got to cut all those pieces and learn again how to make a rib (it's amazing how quickly you forget hard-learned procedures) Jack Phillips NX899JP Raleigh, NC -----Original Message----- From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of K5YAC Sent: Monday, July 19, 2010 9:16 AM Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Construction has begun! My Brodhead hopes this year have been dashed due to my employer...you got to love how your job can get in the way a meaningful weekend in aviation. Anyway....I am going to have to cancel my reservation for a room at the AmericInn in Monroe...10 minutes from Brodhead. We stayed there last year and it was great, nice room, free breakfast, and a nice pool. It's for 2 nights July 23-25 and a double queen room. Hotels in the Brodhead area are usually booked for that weekend so if someone is interested I can notify them as soon as I cancel and they can take the reservation. I need to cancel by 5pm Tuesday July 20th. You can email me off list or on my cell 801-603-3394. Brian SLC-UT Do not archive

I felt it would give me good practice, and help me make sure that everything was set up right and working. I now I have a nice example rib hanging on my wall at school. John Fay in Peoria

Thanks to those sending back their info. Some had problems opening the file. I resaved in all the versions of Word and also included an Excel file. Please don't send info within the email back to me. It's best if you fill out the document and return the file attached. That way it's easier for me to cut and paste. Well that's about clear as mud. I've built several of Norm's projects and use his ideas all the time (used a few on my Piet!). And Chris' westcoastpiet site...awesome! I'm still amazed at how, even after 8 yrs on my Piet project, I can look at the pics over there and find out how to solve an issue I may have been thinking about for a while. Fantastic resource! I'll be coming through Raleigh (I'll be doing some consulting in Rocky Mount NC) the first week in August and look forward to the 3 of us hopefully getting together for a visit. jm -----Original Message----- From: CJ Borsuk Sent: Jul 19, 2010 1:28 PM Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Construction has begun! From: "Mark M" <mmcfi@juno.com>
Hey all, After a couple of years hiding in the shadows of this list it looks like this is the year I will be able to start my Piet. So I have talked the wife into going to Broadhead this year since I have a day or two off and would like to get more of an idea what might be happening during the weekend. I saw the schedule for saturday but was wondering if there are things scheduled for Friday or Sunday? I think I saw something about food but would like to confirm if there is something at the field or at least in Beautiful downtown Broadhead. Finally I would like to know where the signup sheet might be for the "Aw, poor kid ain't got an airplane built yet....Let's take him for a ride!" list might be? Hope to see you there and learn all I can. Thanks Mark Magnusson Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=305473#305473

Probably a good decision, however you can't take five or six friends and a couple of cases of beer out to the lake and get good and drunk in a Pietenpol. (I have always considered fishing an excuse for getting drunk). rick On Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 12:41 PM, CJ Borsuk <cjborsuk@yahoo.com> wrote: > The family wanted the boat built first, but after going up in Jack > Phillip's Piet it was all over. > > > Chuck > > > ------------------------------ > I see what looks like Glen-L boat plans pinned to the wall. > > > > Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Construction has begun! > > From: hangar10@cox.net > > Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 08:03:58 -0700 > > > To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com > > > > > > I see a copy of Fine Woodworking magazine, as well as a Bush/Cheney > campaign sign. Hi Mark, There is always food at the airport, and Brodhead has a McDonalds's and Subway, that I know of, probably more other kinds of fast food. Lots goes on on Friday, with Sunday being departure day. I should be there late Wednesday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. You're welcome to go for a ride in N12939, if you're not too big of a boy. Dan, I'm pretty sure that would not be a problem. As long as the pet is leashed and picked up after, that should be fine. As long as the pet is leashed and picked up after, that should be fine. Thanks for the thoughts, guys. One other question I have is whether the short fuselage exacerbates or moderates the tendency to ground loop. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=305506#305506

Neither. Those tendencies come from the pilot. Seriously, the distance between the mains and the tailwheel is insignifigant compared to other things such as what kind of brakes are used, whether a tailwheel or tailskid is used, etc. I've flown both and neither is particularly prone to groundlooping. Oh, I've already had my groundloop and it was in a long fuselage Pietenpol (mine), but it didn't groundloop because it was a long fuselage. It groundlooped because the axle broke. My oil pressure is well up into the green, even at idle, up in the 40s. In flight, it's right where yours is. And my oil temp doesn't get to 180F till I've been in the air cruising or climbing for maybe 10-15 minutes or more. I think you're there. Still tuned in.... I have to wonder about the purpose of a HALF SCALE Pietenpol. It's much easier to fly real airplanes than RC models, and for not all that much more effort he could build a full sized version and do side-by-side formation flying with you. -------- Bill Frank Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=305544#305544
