I've heard story after story about how folks step up to the plate when things like this happen, and you're back in the air before you know it. Obviously, I'm jealous because you made it to Brodhead and I never have. If you get time in the next couple of weeks, I'd sure like to hear about your flight up there and back, with as much detail as you can remember. Next year I will turn 60 (July 28) and I am hoping I will be able to celebrate that occasion with my first flight to Brodhead in 41CC. Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "kevinpurtee" Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2010 11:01:03 PM Subject: Pietenpol-List: Crash - Long Post il> Hi - I'd like to recount my mishap at Brodhead on Friday for members of the list. The trip up: I made it from Austin to Brodhead in 3.5 days. =C2-1.0 day d elay due to weather. =C2-The only issue I had during the trip was an atte mpted ground loop east of Kansas City. =C2-I dragged the right wing tip b ut the damage was minimal. =C2-It didn't make me happy but it was not a t ragedy. The mishap: I was doing a touch and go at Brodhead. =C2-During the "go" p art I felt the aircraft yaw sharply to the left. =C2-It felt like I had s truck something with the left gear or that the tire caught in the wet groun d. =C2-I powered through it and managed to avoid going into the corn fiel d to the left of the runway. =C2-I thought to myself, "For goodness sake (or something like that), what's wrong with my ability to control this thin g?" thinking back to the wingtip dragging episode. As I continued around the pattern I looked out and saw that my left landing gear V was hanging from the rear attach point. =C2-The front part of the V had been ripped loose from the mounting lug. =C2- I flew over the field trying to get everyone's attention on the ground. =C2 -I knew I had succeeded when I saw everyone running in the same direction with a definite purpose. =C2-I waited for the pattern to clear and then landed on one of the closed runways to take advantage of a direct head wind . =C2-I also planned the approach to take me in the vicinity of the group so that there was rescue available quickly. =C2-The people on the ground did a great job clearing everyone off of the runways. =C2- I turned off the fuel on short final and performed a wheel landing. =C2-I held the left wing up as long as possible. =C2-When the left gear dug in we were going pretty slow. =C2-I flipped the ignition and battery off. =C2-The aircraft spun around ~180 degrees, the left wing tip touched the ground and the aircraft came to a rest. =C2-There was no further incident . =C2-I will never forget the look on Jessie Mueller's face as I was care ening toward her and Ryan's brand new airplane. =C2-I was stomping on the right brake pretty hard. =C2- The repair: if you've got to wreck a Piet do it at Brodhead. =C2-Matt Smi th, a local, along with his Dad and son, spent 7 hours making the necessary repairs. =C2-The landing gear V needed the lugs reattached, the bungee c ross strut tab on the bottom of the V had pulled out, and the bungee cross strut was bent. =C2-Matt, an amazingly talented and knowledgeable A&P/IA did great work and taught me a lot in the 7 hours. =C2-Unbelievable. =C2 -You know he wouldn't take any money, right? =C2-Of course not. =C2-I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to Matt, his Dad and son. =C2-I n addition to Matt and his family, several knowledgeable people looked over the rest of the aircraft for me and verified that the landing gear was the only apparent damage. =C2-I appreciate you. Today: flew ~3 hours and took ~8 passengers. =C2-I told them all that I h ad wrecked the day before. =C2-They all said, "I know" and we went flying . =C2-Amazing. Cause: the yaw I felt on my touch and go was the left gear V front attachme nt failing. =C2-If I had not noticed that the gear was hanging from the r ear lug this event may have gone very, very badly. =C2-I don't always che ck to see if the gear's still there before landing but I've started to do s o now. =C2-I'm glad I looked. =C2-Anyway, the V attach lugs failed beca use I hit something or because the welds were stressed and chose that time to fail. =C2-I did not find anything on the runway so it may have been th e latter. =C2-As I've mentioned here before I have ~140 hours on the plan e since the first flight last September and I've done ~400 landings. =C2- I've worked the gear pretty hard. Lessons Learned & Things I'll Start Doing: I'll darn sure preflight those a ttachment lugs better. =C2-I'll also take the right gear off and have a p rofessional verify the integrity of my welds on that side. =C2-My before landing check now includes a visual check of "Gear down and locked." Good things: I was delighted to meet many of my internet friends in person. =C2-What a great group of people! =C2-Then, with the wreck, they reall y came through and showed me how wonderful they are. =C2-I have been nick named Kevin "Axel" Purtee from TGWP. =C2-They had to explain the referenc e to me since it's been years since I've seen the movie. =C2-It is quite funny and I shall wear my new nickname with pride. =C2-I was presented an award for "The shortest landing at Brodhead in 2010" which I will frame an d hang in a prominent place. =C2-I have now been enshrined in the Hitler video. =C2-A thing of beauty. I'm going to miss some of you and I'm sorry, but thanks to everyone who hel ped, including Jack Phillips, Gary at Brodhead, Lowell Frank, Rob Busch, Er nie Moreno, Mike Cuy, Don Emch, John Hoffman and all the rest of the dozens of people who helped. =C2-Thanks especially to Ryan and Jessie Mueller a nd Dan Yocum. =C2-They rock. =C2-Sounds like an acceptance speech - sor ry. I had the opportunity to see Ty Daniels take off at Brodhead in his Piet - talk about an absolute elevator! Unbelievable. He and his wife were at 100' within 100' of leaving the runway! I'm not exaggerating. At that height he nosed it over a bit to gain some extra speed to keep flying, but then he just kept climbing, although at a slower rate. The key is to build light light light. Ty's plane weighs 640 *with 12gal fuel!!* Ty's a young guy about 6'3" and 140lbs. His wife is 110lbs. He's got an A-65 with a McCauley climb prop of unknown pitch. As for the thin-wall stainless tubing, just how thin are you looking for? You might check in your local area for shops that do car exhaust work, many newer cars have stainless exhaust systems and 2.5" diameter is a common size for car exhaust systems. Wall thickness is approximately .032" or thereabout. Might be what you are looking for, and might save you some money getting it locally. It flew just like an airplane should, and getting a ride was a great shot in the arm for me to stop making excuses and start making sawdust again! This was also with an almost full tank of gas; we filled up the evening before and there was only one short ride hopped that morning. Granted she did not climb like a rocket, but we were able to keep up with Dan & Dan. That was my first time up in a Piet so I can't compare to other Piets, but she flew nicely. Just to clarify, Gene was not the original builder of N502R. With that being said he is responsible for making her such a beautiful, strong flying airplane, having done a quality major overhaul on the engine, installing the Cloudcars prop, etc. We feel very blessed to have been given the chance to be N502R's caretakers and we look forward to having lots of fun with her and sharing her with others as much as we possibly can.
