Dan,
Is it still possible to get your CD about carving a prop?
Your prop looked good in pictures, but seeing it right there in front of

To the whole door, weight, climb, load discussion. My GN-1 Piet has the door. It
weighs 705 empty and with a Sensenich 72X42 prop on my A-65 I was getting 250
fpm climb with a combined 410 lbs of pilot/passenger. About 430 lbs of load
is the most I've carried without feeling really marginal. With my current prop
though my cruise suffers. Coming back with Randy Bush I was making about 68 at
2250. I normally cruise 65 at about 2100.

I think the door will always be controversial. I just couldn't make
myself cut that upper longeron. My wife has had a spinal fusion and
multiple orthopedic problems, and can still get in the front seat with
no problem. I did make my cabanes 2 inches taller than the plans, and
put a cross brace 2 inches down from the top of my split gear for her to
use as a step. We are both 55 now. I put a retractable step to make it
easier to get into the rear cockpit, but never use it. I have the long
fuselage, used Douglas Fir entirely, with an A-65. Empty weight came in
at 692, and I grossed it at 1200. I've flown it twice at full gross and
it still has a decent rate of climb. I agree with Jack, that the minor
acrobatics required to get in, can help you eliminate inappropriate
passengers. I have a maximum passenger limit of 200 pounds with full
fuel. How do you eyeball a female potential passenger to determine if
she is over that limit? I'm sure not going to ask!

To all considering Dan's CD, or carving their own prop,
I saw Dan's prop last year at Brodhead '09 (sorry to have missed seeing his
plane this year), bought his CD and carved my prop last December. It took me
about 40 hours, but he lays it all out very nicely, even how to figure
pitch! Admittedly, I have not run my engine yet, but if this prop fails I
would not hesitate to carve another - it was very enjoyable. Mine is hickory
and is shaped similar to PF Beck's, for a CS Corvair:

Hi Ben,
My wife has had 3 back surgeryies (sp) along with all the artificial joints
and she gets around fine; she walked all over Brodhead with me this year a

you can see how easy it is to get in for us older less flexible types.

I can't speak on how the event was 10 years ago, but I know this year was great...
once again, magical. There are a ton of new posts on the board, but I don't
have much time to read or write at the moment... I'm volunteering on the Warbird
flight line this week at OSH. This place is a whole different kind of amazing.
Our first time here and we are really blown away.
Thanks for your kind words John, and thanks to all you regulars for allowing us
into the fold and making us feel welcome. We are already looking forward to
next year.
Better get back to it... I'll catch up with you guys next week.

Douwe, how about catching me up to date on your rebuild? You can contact
Jay Anderson at 325-356-2810. Tell him Gene said hi. I was the first to
use his prop on a Piet and I can't tell you how good he was to work with.
When I was on your case about getting you to get to work on your plane,
after it was dinged up, I was called "cruel" by some. If they think I was
cruel to you then I guess I'm being REALLY cruel to my self by undergoing
some really bad Chemo. Now that's being CRUEL. But then you're going to
end up with a great, and safe plane to fly and I'm going to end beating the
cancer. Guess there is something to be said about having the balls to be
"cruel".
Still asking for all the prayers I can get

John, Dad and I rebuilt his ma-3sp carb, and there ain't nuttin to it.- H

a little pricey but I believe they had more than 1 model included in them.
- The only real setting I remember is setting the float height.- A prop
per size drill bit is all you need to set it, you are just using it like a
feeler gauge, or just use you feeler gauges.- If you have ever rebuilt a
marvel schebler tractor carborator it's about the same.- Also there are s

awake so long I was finally in deep sleep by then. Or is it the thunder to
which he is refering to as a Howitzer? I didn't look at my watch but I do
recall one thunderclap and simultaneous lightning that made me jump and bou
nce off my air matress.

I have never rebuilt a tractor carb but I have done carbs for automobiles
single, 2 and 4 bbl performance ones in addition to smaller ones and some SUs
for motorcycle and the 73 MGB , just no tractors or Lycoming in my
experience base. There anything special that has to be done to protect it from
ethanol just in case mogas finds its way in? Just planning for what the future
may hold.
Thanks for the info

John, Dad and I rebuilt his ma-3sp carb, and there ain't nuttin
to it. He bought the rebuild kit from Chief Aircraft I
believe. The mannuals are a little pricey but I believe they had
more than 1 model included in them. The only real setting I
remember is setting the float height. A propper size drill bit is
all you need to set it, you are just using it like a feeler gauge, or
just use you feeler gauges. If you have ever rebuilt a marvel
schebler tractor carborator it's about the same. Also there are
some AD's on them, 1 for the 2 piece venturi, and one for the
float. If you have the brass float and it is in good shape your
golden. The a.d. was on the phenolic float, which got fuel soaked
(absorbant) and sunk, thus flooding the engine, and leaking fuel in the
cowling.
Hope this helps

I think the sky rumbled for 30 seconds after that strike. I was sure the next
sound I was going to hear was emergency vehicles arriving at the airport. The
headlines the next day would be "Mutiple deaths at Pietenpol fly-in!". All I
could think of was if the tent campers were okay.

I definitely heard it echo off of a number of surrounding treelines and hil
ls for 30 seconds or more. As you=2C I was positive that someone had been
hit=2C and was not too sure it wasn't me for a few minutes!! I really expe
cted to hear sirens and minute.

Hey Jim!
Sorry I missed this post a few days ago!
Contact me off line when you can. I think there might be a couple of
holes missing for the rear support (R12a and b) struts. Not hard to
drill yourself, but I am not sure if they are missing on yours or not.
I've got one rib built, and starting back up again soon. With all the
summer distractions, I've gotten behind!
Glad to hear from ya! It was great to meet you and your family when
you came through. What a great sport this one where we can eventually
meet some of the folks we swap ideas with over the forum!
