Trying to figure out the right prop for an 0200 piet is turning out to be a bit tricky. There are only a few around and each one has a different prop and all the "experts" completely disagree. I noticed one of the "Brodhead gang" owns a red Hatz with cream wings which is 0200 powered and I thought his prop experience may prove helpful. However, I don't know his name, but I've seen him there every time I've visited. He pals around with Ted Davis, is about 5'9" with a moustache and was one of the guys behind the Barnstorming movie. Does anyone know who I'm talking about who could help me with a name or a way to find him? OR, does anyone have a number for Ted Davis? He's certainly know. Thanks! Douwe

Hey Gene, I just said a prayer for you! Sorry you have to go through this, I know how tough it is having watched a bunch of friends do it recently. Sounds like you know the Lord and are keeping an optimistic attitude, keep it up!! He's got a plan!!! Don Emch has the wings and is pretty much ready to start covering, so they should be done within a few months Greg Cardinal rebuilt the tail surfaces and I just got those at Brodhead (wouldn't charge me, just told me to "pay it forward") Fixed some surprisingly minor damage to the fuselage, which is stripped and installed an 0200. Just finished the mounts and firewall a couple of days ago. Making new wheels (my fourth set!.... don't ask...) Will have a completely new "look" and color scheme as the new engine just doesn't seem to work with that old 20/30's look I was going for with the old one. I agree with Jack when he says rebuilding his was one of the hardest things he's done. It definitely is a slogging match now, and much of the fun has been taken out of it. Brodhead helped a lot, and coming up with a new look has interjected some novelty back into the project. Other than that it is a daily fight to get my but out there and move it forward. However, I am determined to get her done, hopefully by end of winter, unless this 0200 throws me some curves and turns out not to be as represented. Stay tough bro!! Douwe

Hi Douwe, Shorter gentleman (although not quite properly sized) with a moustache that hangs with Ted and was involved in Barnstorming sounds like Jim Hammond. He has a Hatz as well, so that's probably who you are thinking of. I'll forward you his contact info I have from the MAAC directory offlist. If for some reason that is not who you are thinking of I'll include Ted's information so you could reach out to him. I'm also going to include Tim Mickel's info, as he has the red O-200 powered Piet that was at Brodhead. Good luck! [Jim] Well I sure know THAT feeling! Think of it this way...this isn't YOU doing something on your own...it's you being a part of a community of VERY special people involved with something special. I know you realize this, but I also know that feeling of working on something "alone, all by yourself" and then realizing this ain't just you... I suppose all this is obvious when you see how these people step up but I just can't keep quiet about it....something special (on MANY levels!) is going on with this Pietenpol crowd...what an honor to get to be a part of it. Blessed in Pryor....jm However, I am >determined to get her done, hopefully by end of winter, unless this 0200 >throws me some curves and turns out not to be as represented. > >Stay tough bro!! > >Douwe > >

Douwe, Sensenich has a list of props for different engines on their web site: http://www.sensenich.com/products/browse/14 Univair publishes an incredibly low resolution (read as: piss-poor) pdf parts manual which lists many aircraft/engine/prop combinations. http://univairparts.com/pdfs/propeller.pdf If all that fails, you could just call Sensenich or McCauley sales and ask them what prop dia and pitch they recommend. Hey, What is the lightest battery I can use to start my 0200. I won't be running anything except maybe a smoke pump and a couple of cigarette sockets for gps etc. Just need it for starting. Thoughts? Douwe

We've had very good luck with this one: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc625.htm We use it on a C-85 w/o charging system. We run a gps, electronic tach, and starter. We charge with a 5W 12x12 solar panel. >Hey, > >What is the lightest battery I can use to start my 0200. I believe the WW 'Vair guys commonly use the PC680 from Odyssey: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm <http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm>A little taller and wider, but a bit thinner for FW mounting if so desired. A bit more powerful than the 625. Either way, the Odyssey batteries seem to be favorites in the Corvair camp. Hey Gardiner, The plane is in an open hangar. The solar panel has a 6 foot cord, so we run that out the front and the panel sits in the sun. The 680 has good numbers. I got the 625 because our hangarmate has one on his 601HDS and did us the favor of welding up an exact-fitting battery holder for us from the pattern he used on his plane. Made the decision easy! :) Hope you had a good time at The Show! Jeff do not archive >jEFF, i like my odyssey 680 > > for my corvair. Do you leave your plane out in the sun for solar >panel charging? I don't know if you have an old starter like the ancient Delco I had on my old Lycoming in the Tri-pacer but the large aircraft battery barely turned it over. now I have a gear reduction type Japanese starter rigged on the Corvair engine and a little 20 Amp gel cell sealed battery ( which is several years old) turns it over fine.I know that doesn't answer you question except for the fact that there are geared starters out there to replace the old heavy aircraft starters that definitely take a lot less juice.Raymond Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=306880#306880
