Mark, I like the idea of individual kits for the various airframe components.
That spreads the cost out over the course of building so as not to be hit with
the cost of the entire wood package at one time. Depending on cost, I might
be interested in this.
Matt, Ken Perkins does offer kits with the metal fittings and Tom Kreiner is developing
his metal fitting kit as well, but as of Brodhead a few weeks ago, Tom's
kits were not ready for market yet. Ken's parts are top notch, having seen
some of them at Brodhead. I'm sure that Tom's kits will also be very high quality
once they are ready...

Hey,
I think I figured out what the gunk on that prop is, though it's kinda
gross. I'm convinced it is decades of accumulation of cigarette smoke tar.
I'll bet this thing hung in a bar or restaurant.
I hit it with a heat gun and it softened into a gummy consistency, allowing
me to easily scrape it off with a plastic scraper. It then instantly
hardens back to a plastic-like material. I thought it might have been
cosmoline, but I can tell by the smell and the way it rehardens that it
isn't. It smells like cigarettes.
After I scrape off as much as possible, I'll try some of the solvents
recommended, starting with mineral spirits.
Thanks
Douwe

A&P? You don't need no stinkin A&P to put a 65 together (or a Corvair for
that matter). Far easier than building an airframe.

Speaking of engines:
~ Gas for road trip to Florida..... $200
~ Hotel on beach...... $300
~ Food for three on road trip....ok, that was expensive!
~ Having a son (and his two friends) who will run to Florida to pick up your A65
for you in exchange for a hotel on a Florida beach........... Priceless!!
I will keep my eye out for another.

I just ordered the plans and cleaned up the workshop in preparation. I've been
reading the archives of this list when I can and have been checking out some of
the builder's websites.
One of the things I wanted to ask here to you experienced builders is what would
you have done differently if you got to start over knowing what you know now?
Any advice you can give me on planning to avoid any gotcha's you may have encountered
in your build.
Thanks.

Mark,
It is my intention to order our remaining wood this week. My son and I chose to
build the ribs first. With those behind us we are ready for the rest of the wood.
I have been pleased with ASC but would like to benefit another builder if
the wood is of high quality and priced fairly.
If you are interested and don't mind moving quickly I would like to hear more.
Please call or email me to discuss.
Good luck,

I'm pretty sure there are MANY more answers to your "what would you do differently"
question from folks than you can imagine...but....
1. Build the fittings AFTER you build the piece their bolted onto. Per plans,
the fittings are a bit off.
2. Spend a LOT of time in the Matronics search engine (http://www.matronics.com/searching/) each time you start a section of the project. All the answers are there, but you'll need to look.
3. Don't spend much time thinking and (especially) redesigning...cut some wood
and get started.
Ok, well, there's a few for you to think about.

Any advice you can give me on planning to avoid any gotcha's you may have encountered
in your build.

I've searched the archives but could not find any plans or
links. I'm looking for plans for the Tail wheel that most of you use.
The A frame design with a Spring.
Can anyone help?

Subject: | Headset and intercom that works in a Piet with open stacks |
Raymond,
I started with a David Clark HT 10 - 13.4, plugged into an Icom handheld, a
nd it was completely overwhelmed by the ambient noise level in the Piet wit
h A-75 and Aeronca stacks.=C2-=C2- I could hear the radio if it was tur
ned up loud, but my transmissions were noisy and hard to understand.
Was also using a two place Sigtronics portable intercom when carrying passe
ngers, but it was also overwhelmed and=C2-kept the mic circuit=C2-open
all the time, adding to the noise level.=C2-
Searching around for something better, I found this electronic noise-cancel
ling intercom:
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/itc401ENRI.php
It works quite well, but only if you use two headsets of the same impedance
(mixing and matching the one below with the David Clark didn't work)=C2-
With two David Clarks, it was OK, but transmissions were still noisy and I
've always hated conventional headsets.
I had=C2-seen the Clarity aloft headset, liked the idea but didn't like t
he price.=C2- Looking around on the internet, I found this little gem:
http://www.anr-headsets.com/Html_folder/QT-HLO.html
This little headset gives the same noise attenuation as a rolled foam earpl
ug AND has great clarity, volume enough to hurt if you turn it up loud, and
my transmissions are clear.=C2- It has the added bonus of fitting under
our required headgear (old style leather cap & goggles, of course :-)
Having said that, the electronic noise cancelling needed to be adjusted to
work with the lightweight headsets (got a second one for the passengers), a
s=C2-the mic impedance was different than the typical David Clark.=C2-
I could not do this in flight, so sat in front of my living room sound syst
em listening to "Round Sounds" at really high volume with my son, headsets
on and plugged into the intercom, repeating messages back & forth until it
was dialed in...........really.=C2-=C2- Wife wasn't home, of course.
One more thing:=C2-the rubber duckie antenna on the handheld would cause
the headset to squeal when transmitting, so a remote antenna is now located
in the fuse behind me, connected by a 6' shielded cable. Attached it to a
longeron.
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/antennasystems.php
If I were building a Piet, I'd locate one of these or something similar in
the wing during construction. Works very well and is hidden from view.=C2
- You electronics guys out there can probably scrounge something that wil
l work for cheap, but I'm a mechanic and dont understand 'trons, so I bough
t this one.
Hope this helps!

after reading the posts about the fly-bys at Brodhead I am wondering how ha
rd it
is to hear radio traffic if you wear headsets in these things. I am sure a
lot
og guys don't use radios but I plan on having a handheld in mine when I'm f
lying
into strange of congested airports and I just use an old hushacom headset.
it is difficult to hear much and impossible to talk over it unless I thrott
le
back in my 2 stroke Challenger-it wasn't that bad in the old Tri-pacer.and
since I have short stacks on the Corvair running out the sides it may be as
bad.but
wondering how many of you actually can hear radio transmissions in these
planes without throttling back? Raymond

Subject: | Re: Any interest in Spruce Kits? I'd appreciate some |
feedback regarding an idea...
Hey Don!
Thanks for the feedback. I just returned tonight from a boat builder that
called the shop today, quite unexpectedly, an told us he wants to retire and
sell all the rest of his wood stock. Unfortunately, the Sitka he has on hand
is only 3/4" thick, and 6 foot long (but there is a fair amount of it, and
it will make GREAT rib stock!).
All we have on hand now is the spar stuff (Tight grain and absolutely
vertical... Looks like notebook paper with the lines too close to write in
:o)
ACS is a great company and I am not sure we are able to move on anything
other than spars right now, but stay tuned! We have decided to get more of
the stuff from our suppliers. We are moving only in the Piet world, and not
looking at being all things to all builders. :o) I will most likely give
you a call to chat tomorrow if you are around :o)
