My local FAA friends say I can rent it out but cannot charge for flying it. I
guess I would need to fly it for free provide I get an official approval from
the feds. I will look deeper into it if I get contacted for possible work. It
sounds like it would just be a fun thing to do. Any excuse to get away from
my real job and go flying.

Probably two years ago, I touched up a couple of spots
on one of 41CC's wingtips with yellow latex paint that
*almost* matches the Insignia Yellow Poly-Tone (but not
quite). It's Valspar exterior latex from Lowe's. The
paint looks the same as the day I applied it; no curling
at the edges, no peeling, chipping, or other changes.
It was applied over Poly-Fiber system (not dope). The
airplane has gone through two annual weather cycles
(always hangared, though) and many hours in the air with
the paint on the wingtip.

Finally got the radiator mounted and plumbed. Everything is running smoothly. I
have just over 4 hours on it the engine now. What are some of you (that are running
radiators) seeing for temps? I have two temp probes, one in the cylinder
head and one in the lower water pipe. After a full minutes run at full throttle(1850rpm's
at 85deg ambient) I have a delta of 70 degrees between upper and
lower probes. I think I need to push the water thru the radiator faster.....?

Do the "ring" test and then send it to Moldex up in Dearborn. They'll magnaflux
it, nitride it, and thread the end for the safety shaft. Wynne has been very
happy with their record of doing things right and as of this past spring, they
were the only guys he recommends. Mine came back from them ready to install.
Cost me $325 plus shipping and it's a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

transmission shop being cleaned. The heads go to Falcon and the pistons, rods,
cylinders, and camshaft go Clarks. Is that correct?

You'll need to remove the pistons from the rods, as the pistons are junk.
You can either use a press if you have one, or rig up a tool from some
tubing, threaded rod, and nuts & washers.
Clarks will take rods and cylinders for core exchange. Assuming you will be
buying an OT-10 cam, you can get core exchange for the stock cam if you buy
a reground cam. If you buy a new OT-10 cam there is no core exchange
available.
You can just hold on to all of those parts until you purchase and receive
your new parts from Clarks. They don't actually recondition your cylinders
or rods and send them back to you, they're just exchange parts, so you can
send them to Clarks in the boxes your new parts come in.
If you disassemble your heads before sending them to Falcon you can throw
the valves away, but make sure to bag the valve keepers, washers, springs,
etc and send them along to Mark with your heads. If you do not you will find
yourself buying Mark a set of all of those pieces from Clarks. :P

Mark has the jigs and the ability to weld on aluminum intake tubes to the
cylinder head intake logs that will match up with William Wynne's stainless
steel intake. Here is a pic:

intake I would have Mark weld them on....welding the tubing to the cast
intake can be a little tricky, and Mark has the jigs to get it all lined up

5deg. off E and W. No big deal, I will be able to take out that error, but I'll

Ed Sampson has said that most Fords head temperatures will run 100 Degrees over
ambient.
Mine runs just that temp. 100 Degree over ambient all the way to Brodhead. It will
drop 5 Degrees when I back off to 1800 RPM. from 2000 RPM.

Low profile intake would probably be eaiser to cowl than our elbow intakes,
but we still get 75-80mph at 4.7 gph.- The bolt on intakes like we have
are also another place for gaskets to blow out and cause induction leaks.
- Falcon heads would probably be worth the $$$$.

I bought a wood kit from Aircraft Spruce over two years ago. Quality was great,
spars and all. I would do it different next time. The longeron material they
supply is 1" sq. I would change them to 7/8".

to answer your second question:
My Dad and I just went though, which motor should we use and came up with these
questions and answers:
1. We want to maintain the Piet's originality, shouldn't we go with the Model A?
Bernard himself changed the planes to accept the corvair. In now way would we
be deviating from his design.
2. We really like old school aviation, but we also like the convenience of just
getting in and pushing the go button, more.
3. The corvair will run on 100LL
4. Better performance, since we both weigh in at just over 200 lbs, we need the
extra HP
5. no radiator in the face... better visibility.
6. tons of support

Hey Guys, Regarding wood kits:
My business partner and I took a business trip last week to LA for a
conference (thus the lack of posts), and on the way down we began assembling
prices and material lists for some wood kits that we mentioned last week or
so ago on the list. We have both a CNC router (5' x 10' MultiCam CNC router
and a 4' x 8' laser table), and have some spruce on hand that is spar grade
stuff, but after the response we got, we began thinking that we would offer
some sub-assembly kits. These would offer the spruce parts as well as the
ply parts cut to shape using the CNC stuff.
Planning all of this was the bulk of our discussion in the car (both
directions) on the 4 hour trip. We have some of the kit info together, and I
have been working to find some of the carriers that can ship reasonably all
over the country. I haven't posted all this yet as I was wanting to have all
the info for the number of requests we've had.
I just checked ACS and saw that they now have sub kits available, which was
what we were thinking of offering. I can't remember if I posted this earlier
when I mentioned that we'd be offering kits, but I think it's great that
those options are available! It makes it better for ALL of us to have
options, and the ability to choose.
We got a new web address for all of this (www.PietenParts.com or
www.PietParts.com), and I can tell you that our kits and sub kits will be
CNC cut Plywood parts and will have all of the materials listed so you can
see what you are getting. I noticed this was missing when I went to the ACS
site... But, nice to see the sub kits which is what I was planning to offer
originally.
By the way, we are going to offer our kits with CNC machined rib jigs for
the Original FC-10 airfoil, the Riblett GA-30-612 and the Riblett
GA-30-613.5 airfoils.
One additional item that I am very excited about offering is a rib stick
cutting jig that will cut the internal rib sticks for each rib easily
and accurately! It can reduce the amount of time it takes to cut the sticks
down to a short afternoon, and they'll snap in place! So far I have the one
for the Riblett 613.5 finished, and I still need to finish the FC-10 jig,
and the FC-10 and Riblett 612 cutting jig. I cut the parts for the internal
rib sticks very accuratly, and importantly, quickly.
We hope to have the website up and running before long:
www.PietenParts.com or www.PietParts.com will eventually get you to the
same place!
By the way, we are pricing the Wing Rib kits, with the Bending Jig, The
Stick Cutting Jig, and the actual Rib Jig for much less than what I saw on
ACS. We are including a 'No Spar' option where you can just buy rib stuff
with out spars to see if you even want to go further into the project before
committing serious money. Some people may tire after ribs :o\

Village Idiot
Are you referring to the ash cross piece on the floor where the landing gear
fitting attaches? The dimension does not matter just start it past the
fitting. If you want to measure, the drawing is drawn to scale, 3/4"=1".
Most if not all the drawing on the plans are drawn to some type of scale.
All you have to do is figure out the scale and make your own scale to
measure that drawing with.
The Corvair will have more horse power and better climb until the crank
snaps, the Ford will have a better sound and more sex appeal until you can't
out climb the rotation of the earth and to have to land, a Continental will
have consistent adequate performance and reliability and thus get you where
you want to go instead of where you end up.
I say go with the Ford, sex appeal is always better then performance and
reliability.

Question 1. How far toward the center do you make the taper on the ash
pieces? The plans show the fitting on the inside but did not find any
measurements for the taper on the ash.
Question 2. Other than the obvious, any advantage to either the Corvair or
the Model A for this type of plane? Better question is performance: which
flying brick is better; corvair or Model A?
