Just met the gent to runs/ created this web site. He's a Journalism Prof
essor at nearby Kent State University
and was a former PBS videographer.

Some go right into a short 3-6 minute video about the subject matter, some
      thumbnails just have still photos.

Joe Murray (the professor) is a private pilot and flies a J-3 Cub out of a
nearby airport. He might do a little story
      on Pietenpols next.

I just joined the list, I'm 13 and building a Pietenpol. My grandfather
built a Skybolt and RV-9A and is helping me.

      Tucker:

Seeing your post is a real joy to me. I have been wanting to fly since I
was a kid but I was actually 54 years old before I had the chance to get
my pilot's license. Now I am building my own Air Camper with occasional
help from my grandson and granddaughter ( 7 & 5 years old) and I can't
wait for that first time I get to fly with them in my own plane. I hope
they get as excited about it as you seem to be! Be sure to let your
grandfather (Captain) know just how much you appreciate him!

In my case the help usually goes the other way though. Both my boys work
for Burt Rutan out in Mojave, CA and are currently on the SpaceShipTwo
project. When they get to come home for a visit they always come out to
the shop and critique my work and usually take back a part or two that
they want to redo or help me out with. So when SpaceShip Zero. One is
completed it will be the work of three generations of airplane lovers.

If you're ever out Kansas way, give a shout and I'll introduce you to some
      of our beautiful Kansas scenery.

I was curious if anyone has a recent list of builders. My airplane is has been
slow to start this summer with the Texas heat, but I want to keep up my enthusiasm
to get my bird flying. I do travel quite a bit around the country and would
love to see some "Piets in progress". If anyone has a list, could you please
e-mail it to me or post it here. Thanks!

      Hi Ken,

Just a suggestion on posting pics to the list: it can be helpful if you
resize the pictures to be a little bit smaller before you post them.

It looks like you probably posted the pictures at their original resolution,
as taken by your digicam. This leads to very large file sizes that Matronics
has to send out to all the subscribers (meaning more of their bandwidth
having to be used). In addition, for those that use the web-based forum to
access the list it leads to the page for that thread being as wide as your
picture is. Since one of your pictures is over 3700 pixels wide this means
that the page for the thread will now be 2.5 to 3 times wider than the
screen. This can make it tedious to read messages in that thread because you
now have to scroll back and forth to read these really looooong strings of
      text.

If you don't know what resolution to resize the files to, you can start with
your desktop resolution as a guide. If you right click on an empty area of
your desktop and select Properties, and then the Settings tab in the window
that opens up, you will see your display resolution. The first number will
be the width...if you resize your pictures to match that width (don't worry
about the height, just have it remain proportional) that will probably be a
      good place to start.

      Hope that helps,

      Ryan

      Tucker,

Congratulations on choosing to build a Pietenpol. It's a great little
airplane. The best I've ever flown. I'm sure there are better planes,
but probably not nearly as economical to fly.

Another builder, Ty Daniels, started building his Pietenpol when he was
in high school and finished it shortly after graduating. He built a
fantastic plane that is one of the lightest Piets I know of: 640lbs with
8 gallons of fuel. It climbs like a rocket and looks really cool:

      http://www.westcoastpiet.com/new_page_54.htm

Stick to the plans, build a little bit every day, and have fun!

      Good luck!
      Dan

yesterday and today tearing it down. I'm really excited about getting started.
I need to order Mr. Wynne's Corvair book. Here's a picture.

You could try a photo resizer like this one I found at CNET. It will do batch
jobs or individual files. It is fairly self-explanatory if you play with it for
      a minute.

Hi Curtis - If I haven't offered already, I'd be delighted to show you NX899KP.
It's hangared in Georgetown so it'd be quite a drive. Tim Willis has a workshop
nearby as well. If you have access to a plane you could fly to Georgetown
      - an easy flight from the Dallas area.

Elsewhere in TX: Oscar's in San Antonio and Hans is in Waller. Hans is probably
closest. They both have flying planes.

Robert Caldwell has a really nice project in Gilmer. That would be a reasonable
      drive.

Let me know. Good Lord willin' I'll be in the hangar all weekend!

There's a place in Sycamore that has a small selection of aircraft grade
spruce. It's just west of Peace Rd on the west side of town, but I can't
       recall the name.

      Yup, that's the place.

I talked to them a few months ago - the gent said he had a small
selection, but it was all approved stuff. Probably enough to get
started on some things. I have no idea on the prices.

      Thanks,

      Curtis,

I believe Kevin and I responded a couple of months ago to your similar request,
and/or from another Piet builder doing some training in Dallas. The offer still
goes. Suggest a time and we will try to accommodate.

As far as I know, I have the only project under construction between you and Oscar's
completed flying plane in San Antonio. (Maybe not-- I've not looked up
Gilmer.) I am a 20 minute drive south of the Georgetown airport (KGTU) where
      Kevin has his plane.

Kevin's plane is only a couple of miles off I-35, and my project is a 7 mile drive
off I-35. Excluding rush hours around Dallas, you are 3 hours drive away
      from Kevin and me.

It's hangared in Georgetown so it'd be quite a drive. Tim Willis has a workshop
nearby as well. If you have access to a plane you could fly to Georgetown
      - an easy flight from the Dallas area.

I was curious if anyone has a recent list of builders. My airplane is has
been slow to start this summer with the Texas heat, but I want to keep up my
enthusiasm to get my bird flying. I do travel quite a bit around the
country and would love to see some "Piets in progress". If anyone has a

Welcome to the list Tom, you will find tons of help and encouragement here from
some very knowledgeable & friendly people on this list. To answer your question,
the wood sizes listed in the Aircraft Spruce and Wicks catalogs (and websites)
is the actual size as you order it. 1/4"x1/2" capstrip and 1"x1" longeron
stock will arrive at your door milled to those actual dimensions. So now you
just need to figure out how much wood you need for your first order and get
on the phone first thing tomorrow so you can start making airplane parts soon!
