In looking at your Kitlog I also seemed to notice that you didn't cut out the TE notch until you did the wing. Is that typical? It would make sense. One good tip from the old newsletters involves getting a pump-type oil can and connecting a piece of plastic tubing to the spout, then running that to a brush so that you can just keep feeding varnish to the brush without continually dipping into a can. Unless I'm mistaken, Mike Cuy's video shows that he did the completed wings with varnish at the end. Yes, it foams and expands as it cures. Yes, it is inferior to other good glues and epoxies in every test I've read about. Yes, it is inexpensive and readily available. Yes, it will harden up into a useless rock in its container over time (not as long as you'd think), so use it or lose it. My only experiences with actual applications of it were not good; both failed. On my airplane, I used it in a non-structural and inconspicuous location to reattach some thin plywood to two wood framing members. The glue joints failed when an inexperienced passenger's shoe pushed on the backside of the plywood. In the other application, one wooden handle of my hedge trimmer came loose from the steel handle. I pulled off the handle, gooped plenty of Gorilla Glue down the hole after moistening (water is the activator), jammed the steel tang back in, and let it cure. The joint held for a few months but eventually the glue crumbled and failed. My only experiences with actual applications of it were not good; both failed.- On my airplane, I used it in a non-structural and inconspicuous location to reattach some thin plywood to two wood framing members.- The glue joints failed when an inexperienced passenger's shoe pushed on the backside of the plywood.- In the other application, one wooden handle of my hedge trimmer came loose from the steel handle.- I pulled off the handle, gooped plenty of Gorilla Glue down the hole after moistening (water is the activator), jammed the steel tang back in, and let it cure.- The joint held for a few months but eventually the glue crumbled and failed. My first attempt was a tongue and groove approach, which didn't work out as planned, so I resorted to a simple butt joint with top and bottom gussets. I'm not exactly sure what is "typical"... it just made sense to do some final prep all the ribs in a batch prior to installing on the spars. I figured this approach would ensure consistent LE and TE alignment. peterk48 wrote: > > K5YAC wrote: > > I masked off the areas I intended to glue (LE, TE, etc.) and applied spar varnish to each rib. In looking at your Kitlog I also seemed to notice that you didn't cut out the TE notch until you did the wing. Is that typical?
