Congratulations Chris on completing this project, and beautiful work!!
Since your plane isn't ready to fly yet, can you get a hold of a couple of
props to bolt use so we can see what she can really do? I'd love to see how
she'd spin up something like a 76X42 as a baseline.

it would need a dry sump oiling system and a return line in the valve cover.......i
am not sure how good the cooling would work. I never could figure out how
they kept oil out of the cylinders with inverted systems, i would think hydraulic
locking would be a problem while the engine sits for awhile.

Thanks Douwe!
I have a brand new 76 x 42 prop from Culver just waiting to be spun, that is the
next step. I need to throw the engine on the mount and wire everything thing
up for good. I have all the pieces of the puzzle, just need to assemble everything.

I always wondered about the oil accumulation issue, too. From what
I've read, when DeHavilland created the Gypsy engine, they simply
inverted a Cirrus, did a few mods similar to what you describe but
not much else, and they were surprised it all worked so easily. Does
anyone here on the list know about such? I don't have the information
in front of me or I'd give a source. Surely it can't be that simple?

Oscar,
A few hangars down on my street there is a hangar owned by Malcolm Dixon.
Tax records and FAA records show it being the same person.
Same Houston street address.
Hangar at 37X.
Sorry to hear he passed away.
His hangar was rented for last 6 years, to a local A&P who also passed away
a few months ago.
But never seen a Fairchild in there, during those years.
I visited this A&P weekly as I walked the Dog.
Any pictures of the plane, it could have been sold and repainted of course.

I know of two Fairchild 24W's under restoration. Don't know the N number of
either of them, but one is being restored by Bob Woods in Goldsboro, NC
(KGWW), the other is being restored by the EAA Chapter 646 in Roanoke, VA
(KROA). Neither are close to flying.

Inverting a Ford B is very simple, Check out the Funk Akron 200 Engine. If anyone
is interested check out the Pietenpol that I flew to Oshkosh in 1988 and JoBeth
Barret flew to Oshkosh in 1999.
Oil is kept out of the cylinders by a 1 " high S.S. ring bolted to the cylinder
opening by 2 each, 10-32 screws.
After the Funk engine sat in storage for 5 years, I pulled it out and with good
gas and a few blades to check for lock,It started 2Nd blade. With a little smoke
it cleared very soon.

Jeff,
Very nice, especially for one built so quickly!
The T-Pin looks cool and no doubt will work well once you have the kinks
worked out. But I wonder. Would that work inverted? Or would there be a
problem with vapor lock?
Cheers, Ken

I don't post anything here much, but I do get the updates from the forums. I am
about 85% complete on my Corvair engine rebuild and have ordered the Fuse, plywood,

My question is are nails and/or brads used in the construction?

Oklahoma (Collinsville?). He found out late about
the 70th or 75th anniversary of the Air Camper, I
can't remember which. But, he got busy and built
it in a season and made it up to Brodhead with
it. Last I heard, he was giving it to his
grandson, but that was several years ago. He was
a character and he got things done. Built his own
home, and it was an octagon. Said he didn't like
corners. Built a real sportscar from scratch.
Built several other homebuilts. Real nice guy.
Earl was to Brodhead a few years ago, but I
haven't heard from him since. Hope he's doing
well.

I used 1/4" staples (on the 1/16" ply gussets), much easier than hammering
tiny nails. No need to remove them.

Not being the purest as many I guess I suppose you can considered I
cheated, however in terms of my own self satisfaction I used West System epoxy,
close fitting joints and clamps along with brads and staples shot from a
pneumatic gun. I wanted to be well assured that the pins would help my clamps
and joints stay tight and strong. Not that I would be critical of others
using just clamps and epoxy, or rubber bands with flour and water paste, its
just me and who I am.
As with your construction those are decisions we all make out of comfort,
reliability, experience or paranoia, same as the ones you will be making
also. Its not a bad idea to ask for advice and when confusion sets in from
opinions you receive, well than you can always consult Tony and see what he's
written about the subject then choose the answer you want or like best. In
the final analysis we all select the answer we like the best.

Hey gang,
I don't post anything here much, but I do get the updates from the forums.
I am about 85% complete on my Corvair engine rebuild and have ordered the
Fuse, plywood, and tail /rudder kits from ACS to get me started.
My question is are nails and/or brads used in the construction?

Subject: | 8 hours and counting down buildapalooza motivational speach |
and or rant
For all the builders, would be builders, over thinkers and tinkers. Its
time to get out the prints, get out the tools get out the saw the epoxy the
mixing cups and start making saw dust. This is the official opening of
Buildapalooza 2010.
Make sure you got plenty of Band-Aids, steri-strips, butterfly's, peroxide
and antiseptic cream, there is no time for doctor visits its self
administered sutures for self inflicted injuries. a little blood make the piet
fly
better and cements the blood bond between the builder and the built. So now
its time to get off the duff, couch and or other reclining chair and lets
get building, Brodhead will be here soon and without suitable
transportation, an airplane, in an inferior model that will suit our purpose,
its a long
walk from anywhere. So lets get building! there is little time to build and
no time to waste as the grass underground is just waiting to spring up and
shut down the build season quickly. So lets get hoppin do some wood and
material shoppin and start buildin, carvin, gluin, screwin, wrenchin, bendin,
sandin ,paintin, riggin, weldin, beatin, poundin, fittin and stitchin.
Spring and the yard are just around the corner waiting to pounce and
strangle the life out of Buildapalooza.
I have yet to see a donkey build an airplane so get off your ass and get
workin!
Lets build great airplanes

Have you made test joints and then broken them in
various ways especialy in shear? I did. You should
too if you haven't already. It IS recomended procedure.
AND rather educational too!
Also what does both West and System Three (T-88)
have to say about bonding wood?

Third line, column two, under "product application".
Now, West might be different as it is reportedly thinner
but most likely not much.
