Nice write-up. As to the 2400 hours I would get on the O-235, I would get possibly 200 - 300 of those hours and then someone else would benefit from my 10 K. I'm thinking more of the Corvair every passing minute. I'm looking into some Corvair parts, from a member of the list, that would possibly save me some $. I'll let you know what happens. ----- Original Message ----- From: shad bell To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2011 12:40 AM Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Corvair Conversion Chuck, We do not have a 5th bearing. We had a crankshaft failure on the 1st engine at about 60hrs. We had no problems for the 1st 50hrs or so, but sure as hell as soon as we got 300 miles from home it started acting up. We were getting detonation and loosing power intermitintly. We thought since it was a lean condition we would tear the carb down (at Joliet ILL, and look for contamination, none found so put it back togeather and test ran and test flew it. It went about 2 hrs with no problems. And then while taking off for the last leg to Brodhead it did it again so it got trailered 400 miles back home. We went through the intake system, and did find a few suspect joints (we were running a Vi Kappler oil bath intake and tubes). We welded up a new intake without the oil bath and after test flying an hr or so Dad headed for a local fly-in. He made about 10 min and the crank let go. He had to shut her down to keep the engine attatched and glided into a wheat field with no further damage (besides his pants). We tore it down again and rebuilt another engine with what good parts were left. We failed to notice a bad helicoil repair on a spark plug hole, and burt a piston (on the ground during test runs) and pulled the head and then noticed the helicoil. We put 6 new 1965 jugs on and some new heads and havent had any more issues..knock knock. The heliciol was sloppy and had a small tang protruding into the combustion chamber and it was getting hot and acting like a glow plug. With some monday morning Q/B 'ing we noticed the radius on the crank journals were not very generous, and might have contributed to the failure. We had some hard lessons, learned a lot and gladdly pass on any help we can, so others don't have a similar experiance. My advise is have one of W.Wynes recomended shops do the heads, Mark at Falcon in wisconsin is supposed to be the guru, it is worth the money, spend more now and save a lot later. Other than that all I can say is follow Wynne's book, and I would go with a 5th bearing if I had to rebuild this thing again. 240+hrs and counting Shad P.S. The 0-235 would be a nice engine, but would run from 7-10K to do a complete by the book O/H, but they can go 2400hrs between O/H, $$ per hr might be comperable. --- On Mon, 3/7/11, Charles Campbell wrote: From: Charles Campbell Subject: Pietenpol-List: Corvair Conversion To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Date: Monday, March 7, 2011, 7:45 PM Shad, I know from reading a lot of WW's stuff that you have been flying behind a Corvair for quite some time. I know that some of that time had to have been without the 5th bearing. Did you incorporate the 5th bearing or are you still running it the way you built it? Appreciate any information you can give me. I'm still not sure I want to shy away from the 'vair. I have a list of items needed to rebuild the Corvair and the total comes to 5238 including a Monnette Aero Carb, rebuilding the heads, and nitriding the crank (but does not include the 5th bearing). Even with the 5th bearing I don't think it will be much over 6400 I don't believe I can build the O235 for anywhere near that little. I'm still going to tear it down and check everything. ----- Original Message ----- From: shad bell To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Sent: Monday, March 07, 2011 9:35 AM Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Real Airplane Engine, manuals Chuck, I am planning on having to cough up at least $7K for my rebuild, and that is IF the all the lower end is repairable like crank, cam, rods and case. That is also hoping the cylinders can be hoaned and stay in limits, and me doing all the assembly. Looking at some a.d.'s and mandatory replcement parts for o/h it adds up quick. New rod bolts and nuts alone will require some overtime $$$ to pay for (I think they were somewhere in the $60 per bolt range, so $480 or so for rod bolts alone. Next would be a carborator o/h, mag o/h and down the line. I am all for certified engines, And I do agree with Jack P. on the terrain vs engine choice. I grew up here in the flatlands of Ohio, so flying over hostile terrain with the Vair would pucker my cheeks. But here in the Midwest it doesn't bother me, just pay atention to the engine, don't fly if it's not "right", and keep it in good repair. Ken I've had good luck with a 12 ton press, no vise marks or concern about the metal changing properties with heating. I also place a doubler in the tube and weld the end shut. No problems with cracking yet. For a bend in the center I place a support under the tube end. For a bend to one side I place the tube flat on the arbor plate. Wish the tail fittings were as easy!
