Doesn't matter. I still don't like Corvairs, but I would like to fly one
just so I could say I'm not ignorant of their (supposed) qualities. As I've
said many times, if I lived in a part of the country with unbounded numbers
of forced landing sites, such as the midwest, I would consider an automobile
engine for a Pietenpol. I would use a Model A Ford.

me to respond to email and group postings. But we have made it back from SN
F. First of all thanks to everyone for there for condolences for our loss a
nd well wishes. The three flyers from Ga were Gardiner Mason, Bruce Laird a

to participate in the Cub group. He almost changed his mind and flew his Pi

=C2-We had a great flight down enjoying all beautiful scenery as only can
be seen from the open cockpit view from the Pietenpols. It was so cool to
see Gardiner tucked up in some tight formation flying of my right wing. We
made a stop in Perry Fl for a overnight stay. Up early the next morning and
down to Lakeland.
When the storm hit and all the Pietenpols ended up in a pile it pulls the l

shipped back Lagrange. We had calls from our EAA members with offers for 5
trailers to leave Carrollton to help to move all three planes back to Carro
llton and Lagrange. After taking inventory of what equipment that would be
needed, 2 groups of EAA 976 members headed to Lakeland that afternoon and d
rove all night. The Environmental guys moved all the damaged planes from th
e flight line to a staging area. We all meet up and started to disassemble
the three planes. We put two planes on one trailer and 5 wings on the other
trailer. Both of Bruce=99s wings where completely destroyed. One of
Gardiners wing was destroyed and the other was salvageable. Mine had major
(but repairable) damage to one and the other was pristine. By the end of
today all five wings will be loaded up and will be in Carrollton tomorrow

Well said, Gary. As I have said to Douwe before, building my Pietenpol was
fun. Rebuilding it (after my forced landing) was no fun at all, and took
real determination to accomplish. I hope all three of you will remember the
joy you had in flying your planes down to SNF together, and use that memory
to give you the drive and determinatin you will need to rebuild. The good
news is that now that you have flown your planes for a bit, you know now
what slight improvements you might want to incorporate as you rebuild.
Hang in there, guys, and know that the whole Pietenpol community is sharing
your pain, and will share your joy when you have them flying again.

Ya know, sometimes April Fool's jokes work and sometimes they don't.
I was kind of surprised that nobody really took the bait.
Oh well. maybe next year.

I probably would have realized what was going on (since I haven't talked
with you in a couple of weeks) if I had actually had internet service on
April 1 and had been able to read emails. As it was, I was trying to triage
279 emails, reading all about the carnage at SNF, and just blew right
through it.
I'll try to do better next year.

Subject: | Fuselage Wedge Fillers |
For the fuselage, plans show a total of 3 wedge fillers glued between the fore-end
spruce verticals. I am not trying to overthink, but is that it? Built per
plans, only 3 wedge fillers. All other joints are similarly double gusseted
with 1/8" plyboard. Is there a need for wedge fillers for the other fuselage
verticals?
Thanks,
Tom

Subject: | Re: Corvair Powered Piets |
I was half way there when I hit a solid cloud layer (Cont A-65) and
turned around for home. I proceeded on to SNF by car, and with the
forecast decided not to try again. The 3 Piets that made it there came
in over the weekend before the weather turned to crap. I stopped by to
see them Thurs night after the storm and they were all in pretty good
spirits all things considered. Meanwhile I consider myself to be one of
the luckiest Piet owner/builders alive. Hopefully there will be at
least one Continental Piet there next year (mine)
