I am finally done with my landing gear and brakes and was just starting to work on a fairing for the axle. (My plan was to use thin plywood.) How did you attach the fairing to the axle? I had thought about just letting the fairing hang loose and allow the moving air to "right" it in flight. But maybe it would just flutter ar ound.- Thanks. In the past I have landed at whatever airport was on my way from here (Little Rock, AR) and would land in the infield grass or along the side of the runway. As I grow older and wiser I realize that the odds of me hitting a pipe, hidden drainage ditch, manhole cover or some other invisible obstacle are getting pretty well stretched, hence my plea. I know that there are a lot of airports with both grass and paved runways that aren't shown on sectionals. There are also airports with sailplane ops or ultralight runways that aren't listed. Local knowledge is the key here so I'm polling the group. I'm too cheap to get the AOPA airport directory and I don't want to spend hours on the computer looking up every possible airport along my path. If you live close to the corridor from Little Rock to the Indianapolis area or have flown the route, I'd appreciate it if you'd contact me off list with your recommendations. They have gas and grass and left the FBO open for us. They also have a curtsey car and a good Mex restaurant in town. Kankakee (3KK) is a good fuel stop and you can make it to Popular Grove or Brodhead from there. Oh yes we also looked at my crowded shop and piet project with hopes of the hangar soon. Certainly a really nice guy and one you should all welcome into your shops. the kool par is he fixes airport x ray machines so I asked him about one for my shop, never know when an Oklahoma visitor may be in town, he likes frisking too much and it makes him giggle. Which is when the tools begin to hit the ground fro under the traditional Columbo trench coat even when its not raining, hmmmm, curious? At any rate you dont have to check your bench, tool box or look for your drill press when Matt leaves, suggest you spend the time to meet him. A good visit tonight and well worth it. Plus he likes Yuengling on draft, what more can you ask for in a fellow Piet builder, rebuilder ?
