Douwe, this airplane is surely in a class by itself, artistically speaking.
I don't think I have ever seen a homebuilt with this type of high-class
artwork and attention to detail. I REALLY like the anti-rotation axle

Rube Goldberg? White tires......very cool.
We are going to have to create a whole new parking row for you at Brodhead.

Why, some people have been known to take longer than that just to build their ribs...
(right, Gary?).
Just wondering, Dave - As I recall, you've got an O-235 on your Piet, yet it looks
as though you extended the motor mount considerably. Was that necessitated
by W&B? Did your construction end up tail heavy, or is your plane just set up
for a more "full figured" pilot?

Bill,The O 235 doesn't weigh that much,I built the long fuselage and covered it
with Ceconite 101 and the full Stewart systems system. The whole plane is under
800# and I made the motor mount last.I only weigh in at 185 in flying mode but
I want my CG at 16.5 full of fuel and 18 empty thus the 17" motor mount. Also
a 300#er could fly it if he could fit.

Okay, after taking another look at your photos, it looks as though your cabanes
are vertical (no rearward tilt). That would account for the need for a long motor
mount. Sounds like your CG range is very small (no doubt thanks to a wing
tank, rather than a nose tank) and well within acceptable limits.
The weight of your Piet sounds a little on the heavy side, but you've got lots
of power available to compensate with.
Good luck with the test flights.

I have the 1932 F&GM - original and reprint. There are actually quite a number

I don't think I'd use these floats either, but it's interesting from a historical

Great choice of tires. Not so sure it was a good idea to reveal it so soon

I was just thinking.
To steal a thought from Robert Caldwell: My idea of a perfect day.
Gather up a gaggle of West Coast Pieters and shoot up to Oregon.
Hook up with Oscar and a couple other guys from N. Oregon and Washington.
Blast across the east Oregon dessert and pick up one or two more from Boise.
Scoot across the southern end of Idaho and up through the Targhee Pass.
Zoom across the Montana Badlands, and meet up with Rick Holland as he
dog-legs it up and over.
Dash across the Dakota's and pick up a few of you Minnesota Boys.
Arrive in Brodhead, en masse!
Now, tell me that wouldn't be a Perfect Day!! (My wife says I'm a dreamer.)

If you can find some piets with pilots and guts, it's only 44 miles from
the Red sea coast to Mecca IF we can BORROW a U S Navy baby carrier from
WWII, Lord have Mercy, couldn't we have fun and create some moving diplomacy.
I
am inviting myself as a bombardier in your front seat. That would bring
ALL our troops home, cut the defense budgit by 70%, make those politicos face
facts, eliminate all foreign aid and welfare, but don't touch my SS.
Am I a dreamer or what. Be sure the Piets have their wings filled with moth
balls for the short flights over that red water, I don't think it will
part for a Piet.

Here is the result of riveting the reinforcements in...
i made up a test piece with only one rivet..its tough
the space between the 3/4 x 1/4 aluminum is just enough to slide over the
tabs on the gear mount.... i think i like it

Corky,
The Navy has those very cool helicopter carriers, like the USS Peleliu.800'
deck.plenty of room for a Piet take off. You put the mission together and
I'd be the first to sign up! ('cept I don't have a plane, yet)

Subject: | Was The Perfect Day. Now ... Being like Rick Holland |
Billy,
I loved working on the tail! Simple to understand...everything went together
well...it was my first accomplishment! Then....
It sat for 3 years with little attention while I moved on to other stuff,
'till I saw Rick Holland's trim tab...
Having a Corvair, and the subsequent electric system, just like Rick...
And, also, just happened to have the exact same actuator sitting on a shelf
(doesn't everyone?)...just like Rick...
I concluded that I also needed a trim tab...just like Rick...
It was an easy, and fun, weekend project!
Now, I have sandals in the closet, oddly striped shirts, and a trim
tab...just like Rick!

Corky; not to be uncharitable here, but if I may put this in a
diplomatic way: I have no problem with you riding in the front
seat of 41CC but it might get us on mission with a bit less
"effort" if I were to take front seat and you get in the big roomy
cockpit with all the controls ;o) Besides that, I've gotten
very good at climbing into the front cockpit very quickly after
prop-starting for the pilot.
So, let me fly navigator/bombardier and just call out heading
and distance to target and let you fly the airplane, OK? I can
still picture the Mitchells clawing their way off the deck of the
Hornet when Doolittle led them on their raid. Fully-loaded
Piets would do a lot better... the Hornet had a deck that was
about 770 ft. long and a Piet would have no trouble at all
working off of that deck. The only problem might be that it would
take forever to land and take off... with the ship sailing at a
forward speed of about 30 MPH and any wind at all, we'd still be
at 75% power on landing, all the way to the deck, or the ship
would pull away from us ;o)
Or were you thinking of making it a run-the-tank-dry, suicide,
one-way mission into enemy territory with no return to the ship?

Pietenpol in
It works great Mark, weights a couple ounces and cost me $200. The only
thing wrong with it is it doesn't fit in with the vintage theme (like my
electric trim and white socks and sandals) and its only a single gauge (most
builders like lots of gauges).
On the positive side besides weight and cost it leaves plenty of instrument
panel room for my comm radio and gps instead of having them hanging all over
the cockpit. I also includes hobbs, volt meter, flight timer, caches the min
and max readings of all sensors, and allows setting min/max for all sensors
and turns on the red light if anything goes out of limits.
Wiring is very simple also, just a couple DB-9 computer type plugs into the
back of the thing.
