Trainwreckx, Thank you for your service! You don't know 'Dangerous Dave,' do you? ;-) I hope, by now, you have checked out www.westcoastpiet.com. There's enough stuff there to keep you going 'till September! We will see you NEXT year at Brodhead.... I have recently found my way into the wonderful world of the Piet, and I must say that I am excited. I too am looking for a place in an airpark, or find a place with enough land somewhere to allow me to build an airpark of my own. I am currently learning and taking everything in from this awesome forum, as I look to begin a Piet build with my wife once I return from my 7th tour to Afghanistan and settle down for good. I am even looking for a job at any of the kit plane or aircraft part manufacturing companies to learn more about design and construction. I am looking forward to becoming a member of the Piet family, build a beautiful bird, and join you guys one day at Oshkosh and other fly-ins around the US. I will thank you now for all of the help and support I know I will get from this great community. God bless. Very respectfully, Derek Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346237#346237

I guess that means the Monsoon is scheduled for Thurday. ;0) Actually, it has been in the upper 90's and VERY humid in Georgia, so I am hoping for nice, cooler weather in Wisconsin. At least not so much humidity! But, barring that, I am hoping for good flying weather to spend time with new friends. -------- Semper Fi, Terry Hand Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346300#346300

Chris, Sweet to see her installed! Did you ever run her with the props we talked about? And if so, can you share the numbers with us? I'm so curious as to what she'll turn up and what kind of prop she'll like, a big Ford type or a smaller 'vair type. What did the final weight come in at? Douwe

Chris: If it is testable we might try to check the exhaust flow to see if your high positioned pipes will be detected in the cockpits, or will the exhaust be deflected higher. Sometimes a passenger will notice exhaust in my Piet on landing or different maneuvers. As long as they don't barf during flight. One Week to go ~ Did I mention that I have never ever missed flying a Pietenpol to all the fly-ins since the second one,1970 something, They gave caps for all Piet pilots that were in attendance, I have a bushel basket full, and I am about ready to give them up as well as all my Buckeye Pietenpol News letters from the First publication to date. Thanks Douwe.....the prop i have for it is a 76 x 42 cloud cars, well see what she does with that and adjust if needed. The final weight is 267 with the prop adapter, i am trying to get all the pieces put together so i can verify my W/B before i get too far along in case i need to make a new engine mount. Just need to wire up the electronics and run fuel lines and it should run. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346308#346308

Heya Gary, I do not know Dave... but I'd like to meet him, especially after seeing his awesome Piet on here. What an awesome finishing touch. The worst part I have found about being over here in all of my years, is the fact that I cannot get on WestCoastPiet due to the base blocking the site. They also block any video... so I can't even watch these beauties fly or even hear the engines. K5YAC, Thank you for having me... I am here for the long haul. The hardest time I am having is deciding what engine to run with that is good for Cross Country with my wife and I, as we would like to spread the Piet love. I was looking at the Rotec 2800 (a little pricey but oh so beautiful!), the Model A, and the Corvair setup. I found a Model A for a good price, but don't want to snag it if it is not up to the task. Any suggestions? Very respectfully, Derek Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346315#346315

Derek: Corvair, Corvair, Corvair. Those are your choices. I can say this with absolute certainty as my Corvair is still sitting in boxes awaiting an engine mount before I assemble it. Since I chose it, it has to be right. (Right?) That is, of course, unless you can actually afford the Rotec in which case beauty wins out every time. My $ 0.02 worth. I've met literally hundreds of people in my travels with this airplane. If we've met already, you have the airplane to anchor me to in your mind. I have the fact that you're likely a middle-aged white guy wearing an aviation t-shirt and shorts. Please do not take offense if you have to remind me who you are. Or you might consider a Continental. Depends on where you live, and how comfortable you are with forced landings. If I lived in the midwest, where the flying is easy (in the summertime), and landable fields are plentiful, I'd have a Model A. If I spent a lot of time flying in the mountains (as I do) I'd want the most reliable engine I can find (read, Lycoming or Continental). I bought it partially disassembled, completed the disassembly , had it inspected and now adding the new parts to it, once I haul it over to the shop. Call it what you will, I call it a Lycoming. Down from the heavens, Just for you. I got my eye on a surplus Liberty, will it take a 100? It ill take a 125 all it takes is money! You can get your hands on a surplus liberty all it takes is money. BTW you may want to get familiar with the GWP before Brodhead so you're able to communicate with the Doc, Axel, Newt Lester Brown, George Brown ( New Guy) and the rest. From: "freerangequark" <freerangequark@gmail.com>
Hi, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Glenn Gordon, I live in Buffalo Grove, IL and I work as a Mechanical Design Engineer. I am seriously interested in building a Pietenpol powered with a Corvair engine. This will be my third airplane: I have previously restored a 450 Stearman, and built an RV-6. I will be at Brodhead this weekend to see and admire all the Pietenpols. I'll have my camera and notebook with me as well to document everything I learn. Since I haven't flown in a Pietenpol yet, this is obviously something I am interested in doing before taking on another homebuilt project. If there is anyone who would be able to offer ride in exchange for me buying them fuel I would be extremely grateful. I am excited about the prospect of getting back into an airplane with Cub-like simplicity and elegance. Keep the blue side up! -Glenn -------- This e-mail was written using 100% post-consumer recycled data. Please consider the environment and recycle this data after use. Glenn, Welcome to the wonderful world of Pietenpols. Look for me at Brodhead and we'll see what we can do, if your not overly super-sized. Normally I prefer to take girl passengers, around 18 to 20 years old, but we'll see. Pietenpol with a dark green fuselage and cream colored wings and tail. Trainwreck, GWP is "The Great Waldo Pepper." This movie is the meaning of life and can be used to guide you in any situation. I believe Dan Helsper has the original copy side-by-side in a sealed jar with the Lost Papers of Bernard Pietenpol. For example and one the may help you: How do you deal with Arabs? "Throw sand in their face, it'll blind them?" Do you have issues with Tobacco? "Waldo! They're smoking!" Then you smack 'em with a 2x4. Dealing with practice wives and wimmin in general: "I knew she wasn't worth top billing." Calming and angry co-worker: "Smile son! Never disconcert the masses!" So let it be written, so let it be done. There is an old and well established adage that states" all life's questions can be answered by a line in the GWP" An adage that has been demonstrated, exercised, bashed, bridged and bantered around on more than one occasion over many a beet and campfire event and occasion. You sir have much to learn about the beet protocols of the cove and those that venture there. Once thing is for certain a hand with out a beet, a voice without a line of quote or miss quote one will have much difficulty in his ability to speak , communicate effectively or earn the respect of others. For one to be a serious participant requires great strength, endurance and deliberate study of the grail of the group, yes sir indeed I speak of the GWP. And no down for the heavens just for you endeavor to speak the words of such importance, meaning and clarity of consciousness I reveal the truth and impart to you the only thing that the GWP can, does and always will mean. Down form the heavens just for you.. "The Great Waldo Pepper" There is just one other great source of information that can only be obtained from the purest of the pure Dan Helsper for which I cannot reveal and only Dan can let you know if its existence and the time when it can be queried for information . Now that you know these truths self evident in their origin it is incumbent upon you sire to become familiar with the words and workings of our humble society. Come on Dan... YOU have never heard of Fumunda? I'm not falling for that. I haven't actually seen it, but I've heard that it was developed by a group of pointy headed scientists at a place called Fermilab. You know, the same guys that brought us sunlight and oxygen? I'm certain that it CAN'T be good, but then again, some people like boiled fish. The cheese itself is just part of the story... the REALLY wild part is how it is harvested... word has it that it is generally eaten (usually licked) directly from the host, kind of like a honeysuckle vine. Are you sure that you aren't familiar? There must be records there somewhere. :D yocum137(at)gmail.com wrote: > On 07/14/2011 03:23 PM, K5YAC wrote: > > > > > > > Oh man... fumunda cheese! Subject: Re: Diesel
    From: "PatrickW" <pwhoyt@yahoo.com>
I considered using the VW-TDI diesel engine for a Pietenpol. This is a turbocharged diesel having peak torque at 1850 rpm. Puts out 90 HP from the factory, about 116 HP as I have tuned. Can hook up a laptop computer to it for you computer guys out there. I don't know the weight of the engine. It is liquid cooled, but efficient. When idling the coolant temperature will drop, and it actually has electric heating elements in the coolant to provide "passenger comfort" in the winter. Translation: maybe a small radiator would be good enough. I have one of these engines in my current car, however the turbocharger recently failed after 11 years and 210,000 miles. Not a scenario I'd want to face in the air, but I believe there are warning signs now that I didn't know of before. Pictures here: https://picasaweb.google.com/Patrick.Hoyt/TurbochargerFailure# I've already ordered a larger (more reliable?) turbocharger, with plans to get this running again soon in my car. However if that doesn't work out (I'm thinking "bent rods" here), then I'll junk the car and consider doing a total rebuild on that engine if the block and crankshaft remain salvageable. Some obvious questions that I don't have answers for are (a) how much does the VW-TDI engine weigh in a flight configuration? (b) how do I attach a prop hub to that particular crankshaft? (c) do I need any kind of additional bearing on the crank snout?, (d) what kind of prop would be used?, and (e) would I enjoy flying a Diesel Piet to the kind of airports that sell JetA.... The idea of "homebuilding" - or I should say "homebrewing" - my own fuel is also appealing. Not saying that this is something that I'll realistically ever do, or even if it would work. But I've got the engine and the skills (I think) to get me a good way there, and it is one of those things I've been thinking about for a while. If I pursue this, the smart thing might be to prove it out in something like an airboat first.... The final proof would have to be by virtue of flying it. Lynn Rusch actually DID it, whereas all I have is just an idea at this point. For what it's worth, I also have an old Mercedes diesel engine in another car. It's a 67 HP 4 cylinder. Seat of the pants experience tells me it's half as powerful as the turbocharged VW, and my gut feeling is that my Mercedes engine is a lot heavier. I have no numbers to back that up though. - Patrick Hoyt -------- Patrick Hoyt 601XLb/Corvair N63PZ - 99.999% done.... Subject: Re: Diesel
    From: "tkreiner" <tkreiner@gmail.com>
After having driven VW diesels (3 of which have been and/or are TDI's), I too, have looked into converting the TDI into an aircraft engine. There are many considerations, including the fuel system, removal of many accessory pads on the block, and the like. That said, the engine is a real dynamo; our current Jetta TDI runs like a scalded cat. The long block weighs roughly 260 lbs., and the completed engine with accessories weighs roughly 350 lbs. The final weight depends on the shipping pallet, etc. These are now becoming so popular, that I've seen complete (rebuildable ) engines with a few minor issues for as low as $400. In order to convert, you really only need a crankshaft mount for the prop hub, and that would need to be carefully designed (right up my alley). There are a few resources on the 'Net discussing Torque, which, rather than horsepower, is what swings the prop. The VW has loads of torque, and would do a great job of swinging a Piet prop. As for the turbo... Whatever you do, DON'T install a larger turbo. The turbo is sized to the displacement and rpm's of the engine, and changing the size of either inlet or outlet rotors (or the input - output ratios) will most likely change the torque characteristics of the engine. If you have access to a SuperFlow 900 series engine dyno, along with a selection of different turbos, however, you might get lucky and be able to test your way to increased power, torque, something, maybe? Kind of doubt it, but it would be fun trying. Personally, with over 1M miles on VW diesels, and over 400K miles on TDI's, I'd leave the turbo as is. If you want to improve the life of any turbo, there are a few rules: 1. Never rev the engine at startup and this will destroy dry turbo bearings. The bearings are sleeve bearings, and the turbo will not have lubrication until full oil pressure has been reached. Wait 6 to 10 seconds. 2. Never shut the engine down fast... allow it to cool for at least 15 seconds on a warm day, and at least 60 seconds after highway driving.. like when you pull in for gas, er, I meant diesel. 3. Always, always, make sure the oil is exactly as the mfr. describes in the literature; NEVER deviate, as you'll be looking for trouble. In VW's in particular, the new oils are critical to turbo life. If you like, you can add a small oil accumulator, which after shut down, will bleed oil into the turbo bearings for a minute or so, thereby allowing you to shut the engine down immediately after a hot run without turbo bearing damage. -------- Tom Kreiner Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346407#346407

Initiation ritual... hmm. Not sure. Could just have something to do with the fact that you walked in the room when all of us were getting our gear packed for the best weekend of the year. The list has been pretty active over the last week or so. As you probably read, our other new friend Derek managed to fire up one of our favorite debates, "Why Corvairs make the best airplane engines"... which normally goes on for days, but could fizzle temporarily as our minds wander to beets, brats, Saturday afternoon drawings and the cove. You on the other hand... well, fumunda and smegma are currently dominating your thread. Pretty thin on the howdy doos or welcome aboard comments. The reason? That is debatable. Some people just have it I guess (speaking of the cheese again). But I think you owe a big thanks to one Mr. Hofmann... I'm telling ya, you can't take that guy anywhere. -------- Mark Chouinard Wings, Center Section and Empannage framed up - Working on Fuselage Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346456#346456

My wife says the same thing. Beware! Lord Bratlimore's return to the Cove fast approaches as Holy Week (Jack P coined it) is nigh upon us! > > -------- > Mark Chouinard > Wings, Center Section and Empannage framed up - Working on Fuselage > > > > > > > Read this topic online here: > > http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=346456#346456 > > > > > > > > > >
