If you are seriously interested in joining this misshapen, ragtag bunch of mistfits,
the EAA Chapter 431 (the owners of Brodhead) may have a deal for you. They
are selling the closest thing you may find to a quick-build kit for the Pietenpol
as a fund raiser. They are selling a fuselage, tail feathers, and a boatload
of Polyfiber covering material as well as some incidental odd pieces.
The fuselage and tail feathers were built this past spring at Sun N Fun N Tornadoes
by a group of guys, some of whom actually admit to being on this list.
Bring your checkbook.
Yes, it's a monoplane.

I sent a post yesterday -- it left here but, for some reason, did not get to
"the list" -- so I'll send it again.
Does anyone of you know who the original "IT" girl was? I can just barely
remember and I think I am quite a bit older than any of you on the list.

Th original "It Girl" was Clara Bow, the movie actress of the 20' and 30's. Is
that the It girl to whom you are referring?

Thanks for the heads-up.
Who can I contact for more information about this project?
Do you know what type of wood and adhesive were used?
Do you know if the fuselage is the long version?
Thank you,
Glenn

Thanks Dave
I am getting ready to leave for OSH and Brodhead in a few minutes when the
Thunderstorm passes. I will drop off thae fuselage and the rest of the
parts and that will give me claim to be the first to Brodhead for the year
also.

Jack... Information noted. I don't like the idea of falling out of the sky,

Hi,
I didn't want to hijack the High Altitude Pietenpol thread and decided to start
my own.
I currently live in the Chicago are and am considering starting a Pietenpol/Corvair
project.
There is a possibility that within the next couple of years I will be moving to
Longmont, Colorado.
How well will the Pietenpol perform as a two place airplane flying in the Longmont,
Colorado area?
Thanks
-Glenn

The short answer is that it depends on the engine and the propeller.
Longmont is not actually in the mountains, being about 20 miles east of
Boulder, as I recall. Still, field elevation there will be about 5,000'.
If it were me, I'd put an O-200 Continental on it and stop worrying.

The Longmont/Boulder area is one thing.Going west from there is another, and
that's where you get into the scenery.I'm looking into the same thing and
the big corvairs look good. They are being built up to 3100cc with careful
attention to compression ratio etc.Know that this area is often prone to
windy conditions but still has a lot of nice weather. The bottom of the east
slope has milder winter weather due to down slope winds warming things up a
bit.A good hanger is very important as I have seen 100mph winds in Boulder
several times.

Hi Glenn,
As Jack said - depends on engine. I fly out of Front Range- on the plains
near DIA. Figure starting at 5,500 at Longmont plus density altitude.
Let me know if you are coming out - my Piet might even be done by then (but
I wouldn't count on it). FYI - I'm doing a Corvair engine.
Cheers

[quote="Dog67(at)aol.com"]Hi Glenn,
As Jack said - depends on engine. I fly out of Front Range- on the
plains near DIA. Figure starting at 5,500 at Longmont plus density alti

Let me know if you are coming out - my Piet might even be done by then
(but I wouldn't count on it). FYI - I'm doing a Corvair engine.

Subject: | Re: Colorado Pietenpols |
Glenn,
I live in Longmont; work in Boulder. Most of the Pietenpol builders
around here are going with engines that put out more power than the
small Continentals and Model A's provide.
I'm in the process of building up a Corvair, which seems to be fairly
popular among the small group of us in the area with Pietenpol
projects.
As you may know, Dangerous Dave put a Lycoming O-235 on the front of
his Piet. He's flying out of Platte Valley, which is just a smidge
lower than Longmont.
Jack Greiner has just finished his Piet. He's got a Continental on
the front of his. My recollection, which may be incorrect, is that
he's using the O-200.
Altitude, including density altitude, are always concerns. I don't
know how often I'll realistically be able to take a passenger up in my
Piet. My Pacer, which has the 150 horse, Lycoming O-320, is at best a
three-place airplane and more typically a two-place this time of year.
Still, as many on the list have noted, Pietenpols, regardless of
altitude, seem to be able to carry passengers if the passengers are
young, attractive, and female.
Let me know if you are in the area. I'll be happy to let you look at
my project. You can even sit in it and make engine noises.
Cheers, Ken

Don't come to the big dance naked! Share this link with your loved ones
and never have to wear non-Pietenpol approved clothes again.
I have done some revisions and a couple of new designs that you may have
seen me most images of but quickly:
The Crank Snapping Corvair Society is represented
I have updated the 2009 "Smell My Dairy Air" shirts to 2011 with better
graphics
I added the Travel By Pietenpol line
The 2010 Brathead design has been updated to "never disconcert the
masses." Remember this one is supposed to look "weathered."
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to see that is
missing or ideas for something new. My goal is to try to keep this site
fresh with Pietenpol, old air racing and antique aviation themed
products in general.
I am really looking forward to next week. It could be a real blast.
Forecast for this area is to be in the mid-90s but dry through the end
of next week. Given the cold and rain we had the last couple of years,
I'll take it.

Thanks Don,
There are a ton of aviation related T-shirts out there and I find most
of them to be bad. So I decided a few years ago to do stuff that I like.
CafePress can be a bit high priced but their quality is good and I don't
have to personally stock 2000 mediums and smalls I would never sell.
Plus. some of the clocks and shirts for dogs are kinda neat. See you
next week.

Subject: | Re: Colorado Pietenpols |
Mark, I saw Jack a week ago Saturday at an airport event in Longmont.
At that time, he didn't mention a service ceiling. The Piet sure
looked great flying and made a wonderfully pre-WWII sound in the
pattern. He's planning to fly to Brodhead (depending on weather and
some medical issues). So that may be an opportunity for lots of
questions about the performance of his Piet. It is sort of a modified
GN-1/Piet. The wing is pure Piet. Some of the fuselage is based on
the GN-1. Cheers, Ken

Hey Jack P - I've been wanting to get myself a CS(squared) t-shirt for a while
now. If you see any for sale at Brodhead, could you get me one (large)? Of course,
if you go through all that trouble, I'll be happy to buy one for you, too...
If you don't already have one, that is. I'll pick it up at the August 1114
meeting.
Ken P

Oops! I wrote that last message before I saw the Cafepress link - Please disregard
(Don't worry Jack, I'll still buy you a Corvair t-shirt if you like).
And I apologize for not saying "Do not archive"
