Drove up here to PG yesterday and over nighted. Getting all my last minute business stuff done this a.m. Sometime later this morning I'll pack up the Aeronca and fly my camping stuff (including the super-sized fish scale for Gary) over to C-37 and dump off. Then back to PG to get NX929DH ready. Not sure when that will be. Hopefully these winds will not be as bad as everyb ody is saying. Right now they are light. So as of right now the plan is to arrive at Brodhead today sometime. This is the last time I will get a chance to check this list today, so if a ny of you boys are getting close to C-77 give me a call (815) 298-5680. May be we can hook-up. Everybody fly safe, ya hear? Subject: Continental Engine Questions
Hey Guys and Gals, - Here's a couple technical questions for those of you not pre-occupied with the Brodhead reunion this year. - - Question #1- We have mounted a 0-200 on our chapter Piet and removed the ----------------- -alternator-and sta rter.- We have covered the the alternator mount with -------------------aluminum plate and plan to do the same over the starter cavity. But ------------------ here is the question , there is oil pumped to the starter gears, if we remove ------------------ the gears and cover the hole, will that cause an oil pressure drop ------------------ because that oil cha nnel isn't hitting any resistance? - Question #2- Where can we find a DIY guide for running this engine on Auto gas. Around ------------------- here the only aut o gas we can get includes 10% Ethanol. We're good with ------------------- the fuel tank and line. Its all aluminum-with brass fittings. - Jeff Wilson Chapter 64 KCPS

Dale, I'm just on the north side of Indianapolis (KTYQ) - Indianapolis Executive Airport. If you make it this far Thursday and have an interest, I can probably find you a hanger to put your bird in Thurs. night. I also have a spare bedroom you can use. I plan on going to Broadhead Saturday in my Cessna 170. Don't have my Piet done yet. If interested let me know. Luckily, I know you are kidding. If not I would have flown down there today but I already decided not to go 40 kt cross wind at 3000 ft. Gusting to 30 kts at Brodhead. Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2011 21:32:11 -0400 We didn=92t make it out today. Weather was IFR until about 2:30 or 3:00, and we had to drive an hour and a half each way back to my hangar at Smith Mountin Lake to get my spare prop for Matt=92s plane. By the time we got the new prop installed and the bungees fixed, it was 6:00 PM and we were too tired to think about flying. We=92ll launch as early as we can in the morning and see how far we can get. Forecast looks pretty good. With luck, we might make it all the way, landing Brodhead by about 7:00 PM Jack Phillips & Matt Paxton From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of John Hofmann Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 2:36 PM To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Someone just arrived/parked at Brodhead!!! I just talked to Kevin and he is at the Sand Burr enjoying lunch. No issues at all on the trip up. Jack Phillips and Matt Paxton were delayed out. Matt had a bungee give out on the gear that cost them a few hours. It happened during a tight turn. No damage other than the prop tips. It looks as the bungees may have been loose and went a bit over center, then were unable to come back. They are replacing the prop with the St Croix that Jack has at his hangar and tightening the bungees. I'm not sure what forecast you're tuned into, but at Madison the winds are currently 220 at 04kts. Winds aloft for Rockford are here: http://www-frd.fsl.noaa.gov/mab/soundings/reply-skewt.cgi?data_source=MAPS&lon=-104.67&lat=39.87&airport=RFD This afternoon the TAF says winds will be 230 at 13mph, gusting to 20mph. The trees on the SW side of the field will do a lot blocking the crosswind component. Fly safe, everyone. See you tomorrow. Matt Paxton was not able to fix his gear in time to take off for Brodhead so is staying behind. Jack Phillips blasted off after the fog lifted: "The fog is getting thicker." "And Leon's getting larrrgerrr." Last I heard he crossed the Ohio River at 12:32 CDT. I think he will stop short of Brodhead and come in tomorrow, but one never knows. I had my Cub up for an hour today. Interesting thermal activity in this 98 degree heat. I will try to take some pictures and post them tonight for those who can't make it for Holy Week. -john- http://www.cafepress.com/half_fast John Hofmann Vice-President, Information Technology The Rees Group, Inc. 2424 American Lane Madison, WI 53704 Phone: 608.443.2468 ext 150 Fax: 608.443.2474 Email: jhofmann@reesgroupinc.com

Subject: Water versus Laser cutting metal parts.
    From: "bubbleboy" <scott.dawson3@bigpond.com>
Im organising the cutting of metal parts as we speak. I have sourced 4130 at a wholesale price through a friend. I contacted a local laser cutter and asked if it was something his machines could do. He said that being for an aircraft, he thought it needed to be water cut and not laser cut. I know other builders who have had their parts laser cut so it must be ok I would assume. Does laser produce more heat and maybe that is where hes coming from? Just wanted to put it out there and see what others thought before I go back to him. And tell me, oh great sage, exactly what airplane are YOU flying to Brodhead this year? Oh that's right, you didn't finish yours yet. As an update, Matt tried the plane this morning and the landing gear gave out again, but not as bad since he put shorter safety cables on it. I launched about 10:15, as soon as Beckley WV was reporting VFR (they lied - when I got there it was maybe 1000' broken. Note that the ridges around Beckley are at least 1500' higher than the airport, so the tops of the mountains were in the clouds and I had to fly through the valley that I-64 follows). Made it as far as Marion IN. Marion is about 4 hours from Brodhead and it was 6:30 when I landed here, so I tied the plane down and took the courtesy car to a hotel. I should be at Brodhead by 11:00 or so tomorrow morning. Matt called me at my second fuel stop and said he has put new bungees on and the landing gear is good, so he's planning to leave early tomorrow morning and come to Brodhead. A bunch of the parts will be welded in any event so the very localized heat from the laser shouldn't be much of an issue. Since the original plans used a weaker type of steel, then the very slight loss of strength on the unwelded parts shouldn't be much of a factor. The only issue might be the difference in temper across a narrow area allowing local stress areas prone to cracks. Proper annealing should make it good to go. I just assembled the GN1 I bought, but couldn't get the Annual scheduled on time for me to make it this year. Just watched the Lindbergh (Jimmy Stewart) movie and now am studying the feasibility of trying to non-stopper next year KLNC-C37 (800sm). I think a 35 gallon tank in the front hole with a hand-crank pump might work. The issue would be oil burn on a 12hr flt. Hmm... interesting.
