As one who just spent seven hours in the cockpit of a Pietenpol yesterday, I
would say the issue is not fuel, but how much abuse the pilot is willing to
take. I've done it in one day from North Carolina before (700 sm), leaving
at dawn and landing Brodhead just after sunset. I won't do it again.

Wow!... Following this post kinda makes me want to rent that old 60's
movie..something..."magnificent Flying something..something..flying machines
" ..
I just assembled the GN1 I bought, but couldn't get the Annual scheduled on
time for me to make it this year. Just watched the Lindbergh (Jimmy
Stewart) movie and now am studying the feasibility of trying to non-stopper
next year KLNC-C37 (800sm). I think a 35 gallon tank in the front hole with
a hand-crank pump might work. The issue would be oil burn on a 12hr flt.
Hmm... interesting. Larry

Plan is to leave MZZ at 0700, with first fuel stop at Lowell IN (C97).
Should land at Lowell around 8:30 (EDT). Back in the air by 9:00 direct
KJOT (overfly), then to SWETT intersection, overfly KDKB then land at Poplar
Grove, probably around 9:30 CDT . How long will it take you to reach Poplar
Grove? I can wait a bit. Text me with updates (919) 427-4440. There's no
law against texting while flying.

Jack,
What's your route around Chicago? I'll be launching at about 9:30-10:00
from Olson in 502R. We might be able to join up at PG. Then I'll drop off
the beets and gear, pick up John and fly back to Olson to pick up my Piet.

launched about 10:15, as soon as Beckley WV was reporting VFR (they lied -

Brodhead and it was 6:30 when I landed here, so I tied the plane down and
took the courtesy car to a hotel. I should be at Brodhead by 11:00 or so

Matt called me at my second fuel stop and said he has put new bungees on and
the landing gear is good, so he's planning to leave early tomorrow morning
and come to Brodhead.

we had to drive an hour and a half each way back to my hangar at Smith
Mountin Lake to get my spare prop for Matt's plane. By the time we got the
new prop installed and the bungees fixed, it was 6:00 PM and we were too
tired to think about flying. We'll launch as early as we can in the morning

at all on the trip up.
Jack Phillips and Matt Paxton were delayed out. Matt had a bungee give out
on the gear that cost them a few hours. It happened during a tight turn. No
damage other than the prop tips. It looks as the bungees may have been
loose and went a bit over center, then were unable to come back. They are
replacing the prop with the St Croix that Jack has at his hangar and
tightening the bungees. With any luck may get across the mountains of WV

Scotty,
I had some metal brackets for my GN-1 cut on waterjet and I must say it is impressive
watching water cut steel! Even though it is extremely accurate (being
CNC controlled) it did leave microscopic grooves that I later smoothed out, fearing
that the grooves would be susceptible to cracking. Maybe those fears weren't
justified, I don't know.
The other experience was using a plasma cutter to rough cut a 1/8" bracket. When
I tried to cut the piece on a metal-cutting bandsaw, the blade wouldn't cut
through the edge because the plasma cutter had hardened the 4130. I would think
a laser would do the same hardening, but I don't know for sure. I had to
grind away the hardened part, but as the other poster said you could also anneal
it to remove the hardness.
Good Luck,

Either will work fine.
The very fine grooves left by water jet cutting are really very tiny radii's and
not V-type sharp grooves as left by a band-saw blade.
A file drawn over the edges will smooth them out.

Subject: | Milestone! (and a Question) |
While most of the buzz has been around planning, flying and getting to Brodhead,
I have spent my time meeting a major milestone on my build. Last week, Mike
C. was nice enough to come over and help me attach the wings. Since then, I now
have the plane in the garage, level/plumb, wings on and wing struts built and
attached. This is the most assembled the plane has ever been and I, as all of
you have been as well at this stage, am very, very excited!
This Sunday will be 3 years into the project so far.
My question...I have gone over and over the wing setup many times and I am 99.5%
convinced the wings are level...with the CS, with the fuselage and with each
other. Looking from the ground, they look level. But when I climb up on a step
ladder and look across the top of the wings, they appear to have some minor
dihedral. I actually want a little, but at this stage I was hoping that everything
would read/show and look level. Optical illusion, or am I missing something?
Thoughts?

We manufacture a lot of parts for airplanes and we use water jet only. The
reason is a laser will case harden the edge of the metal part. First when
you drill out a hole you will mess up a drill bit really bad. And if you
have to bend anything the edge will crack unless you polish it. I think you
could use laser and your parts would be just fine as far as stress. There
are just those drawbacks I talked about. I am building a Piet and we are
thinking of offering up some metal fittings for the piet. I will be at
Broadhead.

Jeff,
I have the same set up as you except mine is a C-85. I can't remember about the
starter gears, its been too long since I had the engine apart. Although I think
the starter gear was left in place behind the rear gear case. As far as the
auto gas goes. I have an all metal fuel system and a steel needle and seat
in the carb. The only rubber I have is aircraft quality Airquip hose between
the gascolater and the carb. I have not had any issues with that piece of hose.
The only actual issue I have with the auto gas is that the O-rings on the
fuel drains need to be replaced every annual due to swelling. That is it. I
don't worry about the fuel additives since it is too cold to fly above 9 or 10
thousand feet. Just put a little marvel mystery oil in the fuel occasionally
and all will be fine.
Hope this will help you, Happy Landings,

You could tie a string to a rib at the end of one wing, then pull it tight
from the end of the other wing and see if there is a gap between the strin
g and ribs at the center section. Directly over the spar would probab
ly make it easier to see and/or measure.

, Mike C. was nice enough to come over and help me attach the wings. Since
then, I now have the plane in the garage, level/plumb, wings on and wing
struts built and attached. This is the most assembled the plane has ever
been and I, as all of you have been as well at this stage, am very, very
excited!
This Sunday will be 3 years into the project so far.
My question...I have gone over and over the wing setup many times and I am
99.5% convinced the wings are level...with the CS, with the fuselage and
with each other. Looking from the ground, they look level. But when I clim
b up on a step ladder and look across the top of the wings, they appear to
have some minor dihedral. I actually want a little, but
at this stage I was hoping that everything would read/show and look level.
Optical illusion, or am I missing something? Thoughts?

Could someone at Brodhead please contact the Brodhead EAA chapter treasurer for
me. I wrote them a modest check for their building campaign many months ago
and right away got a nice thank you letter back - but the check has never been
cashed....?!?!?!??
I want to make sure the funds go to their new hangar project.....
Thanks..........

Jeff,
As Ryan was getting at, I think your main concern with ethanol is the
carburetor. You need to make sure the needle, float and seat will not be
affected by it. Some needles and floats may not be metal. Some of the
non-metal parts will be affected by ethanol, however some may not. My
experience is with the Strombergs, if you have a Marvel Schebler carb
things may be different.
Here is a link to a BUNCH of documents I've collected over the years
regarding carburetors for small Continentals. Much of this will apply to
your O-200, some may not. You can probably find the answer to your
questions in these documents:
http://www.wotelectronics.com/airplane/Carburetor/
Gaskets may be affected by ethanol...some people would probably say
that the gaskets WILL be affected over time by ethanol.
Ethanol may also increase the likelyhood of carb ice due to a greater
temperature drop when it evaporates. See the link below from
sacskyranch, which is choc full of good information. If the information
you need isn't on this website, it probably doesn't exist:

Michael, I would suggest renting a surveyor's transit. That will tell
you definately whether the wings are level or have some dihedral and how
much, if any. Chuck

I guess the string bit would be a lot cheaper than renting a transit.
Good luck. Sounds like you are pretty close to covering. Wish I were
that far along. Just finishing my right wing. Left wing should be a
lot faster -- I'm learning what to do on the right one. Fuselage is
about half finished. Still need to build up the landing gear and engine
mount. Maybe I can make it to Brodhead next year. C

You could also build a bunyip (water level). It's cheap and you can re-use it
to level and re-level whenever you want!
There are a lot of Youtube videos explaining how to do it....
Here's one:

Looking back through the archives many have mentioned they were going to offer
metal part packs but other than Ken Perkins, none have eventuated. I know people
say that it cant be done as no two Piets are the same but there are parts that
will fit all and a few that maybe wont.
