This will be my fourth Brodhead in a row I have missed after attending 3 in 04,
06 and 07. I'm not looking for anyone's pity about my plight as my lack of attendance
has everything to do with my own career choices. Nevertheless, I am
hopeful that those who are fortunate enough to be there this weekend might take
a moment or two to post their observations. As a Piet builder and avid reader
of this list and an infrequent writer I, like most, feel a strong kinship
to the builders and fliers of the Pietenpol and hope some of you will be my eyes
and ears on the field.
How many Pietenpols are there? What forums are being offered, how's the weather,
the food, the mosquitos etc...
Just a quick post on your macdonalds coffee run or when picking up ice at the piggly
wiggly, and a picture or two would be greatly appeciated. Things are too
quiet!

Jack,
I'd love to see the pictures but to do so we must be friends on Facebook. Unfortunately,
your privacy settings don't allow me to request becoming a friend so
this isn't possible.
I realize you're busy at Brodhead and don't have the time (I wouldn't) but if you
could relocate the pictures or open your account, I'd love to see your pictures.
Bill

Sorry, I just got here and don't really know who's who. I recognize all the
planes, though!
Jack Phillips, Dan Helsper, Shad Bell, Dick Navr(...sp?), Ryan Mueller, and a
whole bunch more are here, judging as their planes are here.

Scott,
I cannot help you with pictures as I am not able to go this year either. I have
been 2 years in a row but this year life got in the way. I had an email from
a friend I met at Brodhead last year and it struck a pang of disappointment
that I would not be able to hang out with him this year. He gave me my first
ride in an GN-1 last year which is what I am building.
I see that you are not too far from me. I am in Remsen NY which is just north
of Utica. We should get together one day and compare our progress.
I bought a GN-1 about 75% complete with a Corvair engine. The 75% is misleading
as I spent 2 years figuring out what the previous builders did, and then 3 years
more undoing and redoing things I did not like. This spring I started into
the engine which was supposed to be redone but lacked the care that I wanted
to see. I attended Corvair College #20 and learned a whole bunch. I will probably
receive my heads back, totally reworked, on Monday and can begin to reassemble.
Once that is done it gets put on the airplane to check weight and balance
and then the fuselage gets covered. Wings are done but one needs covering
and the tail feathers are covered but need some patching.
Well, hang in there and maybe we can share a ride to Brodhead 2012.

I bought a project so I did not have to make all my metal fittings, but I did have
to remake quite a few. Maybe I am old fashioned but I found that good layout
and a good hacksaw blade did just fine. I'll that even if I had to remake
all my fittings that 1 1/2 hours every night away from the TV or whatever vice
one may have will cut out most fittings in 2 or 3 weeks. If you already have
done some careful figuring and layout in order to purchase materials then a
lot of the time consuming work is done. Just tune in to some good music on the
radio and saw, saw away.

Good idea. My daughter plays the saw.

It's Brodhead.

I wish! I'm in Appleton now, I have an 8am work start tomorrow for OSH. I didn't
even think about going to Brodhead until yesterday. I'm glad I stopped by
to see the Piets even if it was only for about an hour.
When I left, there were several Piets in the air. Shad, Jack, and Axel were doing
three-ship formation fly-bys. They put on a good show. :)
When I get more pics uploaded, I'll post the link.

I arrived on Wednesday, but I've only been taking detail pictures that I
didn't think others would be interested in.Friday and Saturday mornings were
rainy, but each day things cleared off by early afternoon. Wednesday and
Thursdays heat has eased a little each day, and the evening "dusk patrol"
has grown larger with each evening due to new arrivals and cooling
temperatures. This evening I was blessed with my first ride in a Corvair
Piet when Kurt Shipman asked if I would be interested in a few trips around
the patch. One glance at his gorgeous ship told me there was no way I could
say no! I've always heard about the ultra smooth power of these engines,
and I'm here to say that Mr Pietenpol was definitely right when he said that
it's just like flying behind an electric motor. The only thing that can
approach it are the Franklin engines like those in the Stinsons my dad had
when I was a kid.
The forums today were excellent. I didn't catch all of the first one, but
was fortunate to catch Frank Pavligas short session on engine comparisons as
well as portions of William Wynne's presentations. For me, forums at
Brodhead are a new thing, and I have been pleased to see that with their
exception, the atmosphere is still the same as I remember as a 13 year old
boy. I guess I am something of a Pietenpol/Brodhead prodigal son, as I
think the last time I was here was in 1987 or so. I was a little nervous
about coming back, since I was sure it couldn't possibly be as good as I
remembered. Fortunately, I was wrong! Of course the people have changed,
but the spirit remains the same. Some of the old names remain part of the
Pietenpol family, and I was able to re-introduce myself to some of my
childhood heroes, and a few even remembered me...
I'm now energized to head home and resume work on getting our Ford powered
Piet back in the air. If I can get an engine together and running before
the end of the summer, I think I stand a chance of having it flying next
summer. With a little luck and a lot of work, I may even be so bold as to
try to fly to Brodhead next year...
