Jack,
I'd love to see the pictures but to do so we must be friends on Facebook.
Unfortunately, your privacy settings don't allow me to request becoming a
friend so this isn't possible.
I realize you're busy at Brodhead and don't have the time (I wouldn't) but
if you could relocate the pictures or open your account, I'd love to see
your pictures.
Bill

The Bunnyip would work really well to check level on the fuse, and the wings.
You don't have to have the tubing taught, and you don't have to have a regular
bubble level that is wide enough to go across the fuse, or a laser to make sure
you are eyeballing everything correctly, or aren't pushing down on the string.
Use the string to make sure you have a little dihedral, and you are in good
shape.

Jack!
Thanks for the brat but you never came over for your ride! Guess I'll
just have sacrifice myself and come to Brodhead again next year. ;-)

Hello good people!
Here are a few of my pics from Saturday evening at Brodhead. I was only
able to stay about an hour and a half before I had to get back on the
road to Appleton. If I can, I'll try to get more photos cleaned up and
uploaded as the week goes on. My apologies if I didn't get your
favorite plane uploaded yet.

Cruising around OSH today I saw quite a few of the planes from Brodhead
on the grounds. Jack Phillips got the best parking spot on the field,
though. I'll get those photos up soon!

Well like everyone else that attended Brodhead this year in a word was
GREAT. I got another chance to share great times hanging out with old
friends and making new ones along the way. I have no regrets in spending
the time with friends despite the time not home building. Building is an
important aspect however if you don't have friends to share the experience
with all ya have is your airplane and little to show for the journey. The
thing that makes the journey great and memorable are the people you meet
along the way.
Thank you all for another great experience

Subject: | Model A Build (reply to Scott Knowlton) LONG |
Scott:
Thanks for the kind words about the "Brodhead report". You asked about my
Model A build, and I'm not sure I'm really qualified to speak
authoritatively, so please take what I say with several grains of salt! I
have built and converted an A before, but it never flew, and it was as a 12
year old with my dad! I will also add that engine build-ups, and aircraft
engine conversions in particular tend to bring out strong opinions, so what
works for me may keep some folks up at night and vice versa.
A few of my personal criteria are much like yours: Simplicity,
Simplicity, Simplicity. To that end, I have tried to keep clear of
"entangling alliances" like add-on welded counterweights, valve seat inserts
and cylinder sleeves. From lurking on the "Ford Barn" and "Ahooga" message
boards I know that many of the well known engine builders consider these
things to be mandatory, but I feel better knowing that there are fewer parts
to fall off, work loose, or otherwise get out of order.
Also from the Model A boards, I have learned how important a good straight
crankshaft is to a long lasting "A" engine, as well as how hard it is to
find someone who can recondition one of these cranks correctly. You
mentioned the Burlington crankshafts, and I have to say that I really like
what I have heard and seen of them. I was able to come up with a freshly
ground stock crank that met the stringent Ford specs for flange runout and
straightness, so I'm using that and saving the $750 difference from the
Burlington crank for other important areas. The counterweights on the
Burlington are heavy too, so I'm saving about 20 lbs there as well.
The airplane that Dad and I bought as a project came with an engine that
had seen a lot of trauma but still ran well despite having been in a nose
over accident and the victim of a cracked water jacket. After tearing it
down for inspection I decided to use another block, crank and other
internals and re-use all of the accessories. It showed signs of having been
a beautifully built engine, but there were too many problems from the
trauma to warrant its' use.
The block I'm using is a 1931, and it has been bored .080 and has fresh
babbitt. I'm not afraid of babbitt as long as it is correctly poured and
machined, nor am I scared of insert bearings when they are done properly.
Babbitt happened to be a viable option for me, and its well known trait
of being fairly forgiving appealed to me. Lately, it has become
increasingly hard to find shops who are qualified to pour and finish good
babbit bearings, so down the road I may end up with inserts when the babbit
needs to be replaced. Lubrication is per Mr. Pietenpol's plans.
Lots of reading on the Model A message boards and also some Model T sites
has convinced me that a new (not reground) camshaft may be worth the money
and I have a Stipe IB330 cam on the way. It seems that reground cams have
longer duration numbers due to simple geometry rules, and this results in
degraded performance in the sub-1600 RPM range. It might be a waste of
money, but at this point I feel good about this decision and hope it makes
for a more responsive engine that will pull and climb a bit better. I was
tempted to go with larger intake valves, but I spoke with Bill Stipe (cam
manufacturer) and he thought that it really wasn't necessary due to the
limited RPM range. I have a full set of new stainless valves and 2-piece
guides that Dad and I bought 25 years ago, so I'll probably use them unless
they give me trouble or something doesn't check out right at installation.
I have a (6:1??) Dan Price aluminum head that came with the project that I
will probably use. The weight savings is substantial and the compression
boost is an important part of the overall package too. Some say that high
compression destroys babbitt, but I believe it is more likely that crooked
crankshafts and detonation caused by poor ignition timing are to blame. I
don't plan on running more than 50-60 hours between peeks at the bottom end
anyway so I'm confident that it will be reliable with regular attention.
The Dan Price head is setup with four plugs, so that and simplicity dictate
that ignition will be single. The project came with a crank driven Bendix
mag and mount that I plan on using. The mag is set up with no impulse
coupling, and this simplifies things even further but requires a special
touch when propping. The engine Dad and I converted years ago used a base
mounted American Bosch magneto with an impulse, and it was a great setup
too. It sure was an easy starter, and I remember impressing lots of adults
by propping it to life by myself at age 12 (not sure how wise that was, but
I lived to tell the tale at any rate).
The carburetor will be a Zenith model B that was on the original engine, and
the intake manifold is made up of copper pipe fittings much like Larry
Williams uses.
I have spoken with Ken Perkins, and I am impressed with the level of
thought and care that goes into his products, but since I'm starting with a
running conversion I really won't need much in that line. If I needed
something he sold, I would not hesitate to make use of him, and I have
considered buying one of his side mounted Slick magneto setups just to have
one on the shelf.
Lots of FordBarn reading has convinced me that a properly rebuilt and
maintained stock style water pump with lead packing can be as reliable as
anything else available and much less likely to fail catastrophically. The
packing may drip a little, but chances are good that it will never spew
water in large streams like a failed carbon/ceramic or rubber seal can, so
I'll be sticking with a per-plans water pump for now.
More questions? Ask away!
Best Regards,
Brett Phillips
