Tom/anyone else with XCOM interest,
That site is pretty much dead. I tried that before and again just now.
Thanks though. John

I was at Brodhead and there was some interest there also in the metal
fittings. It was also good to meet some of you. I have been welding all the
parts for Jack Textor and am building my own Piet. We have made metal
fitting for many airplanes for years. We also have the ability to powder
coat all the parts. We also want to work on the dies that will form all the
parts to an airfoil shape. Anyway I will keep you informed on the progress.
Brodhead was awesome even with the rain.

I'm talking about fuselage length. What did you think I was talking about?
;-)
I ferried 502R up to Brodhead last Thursday to transfer the ownership to
John Hofmann. There were a couple observations I made during the trip
that I thought I'd share.
502R is a much tighter handling machine than my 32 year Piet and with
the Cloud Cars prop it performs a bit better, I think. 8031 has a 74-42
McCauley Met-L-Prop which is pretty good too, but it doesn't climb as
fast as 502R. If I recall correctly, 502R is 60lbs lighter than my
plane, so that could account for some of the lack of climb rate in 8031.
The control cables are much tighter than the loosey-goosey cables on
N8031. I may tighten mine up. Or not.
The one thing I did notice is that the stall on 502R is much more
noticeable than it is on 8031. Now, it's not bad at all - it's like a
Cub - but there is a distinct "break" when it stops flying whereas 8031
tends to mush out more. My feeling is that this is because the motor
mount on 8031 is extended 8" longer than 502R to account for the cabanes
being vertical (or even slightly forward) instead of slanted back a few
inches. Here I'll just say, re-read W. Wynne and Ryan Mueller's article
in the BPA newsletter from last year on which method of correcting W&B
issues is better. Hint: it ain't the extended motor mount version.
The 2 extra inches of cockpit space in the long fuselage version really
makes it a much more comfortable plane to fly - my back didn't hurt
nearly as much with the slightly angled back seat as it does in my short
fuse Piet.
That is all, good people. As you were. 361 days left.

Just imagine how nice a curved seat would be....
Just kidding - we don't need to get that discussion going again.
Funny thing is that I did not realize that your Piet has a "short" fuselage, and
that John's has a "long" fuselage. I would have guessed the other way 'round.
Probably the long nose (ON YOUR PLANE) threw me off.
I have now sat in the front seat of three Piets, the first two being short fuselages,
and the third one being John's, and I can say that the long fuselage definitely
makes for a more comfortable fit for a taller passenger (I'm 6'-2").
I had no problem moving my feet and legs out of the way to ensure that they did
not interfere with the pedals and control stick, whereas with the short fuselage,
it would not be comfortable for any period of time.
Bill C.

Well Scott (and anyone else that couldn't make it, but wanted to), I'd say that
Brodhead 2011 was a success. I didn't get an accurate count (I'm sure someone
else probably did) of the Piets there, but I would estimate that including the
several Piets based at C37, there must have been close to 25 in attendance.
Only two Ford-powered Air Campers flew in (Larry Williams and "Pieti" Lowell Frank),
and three Corvair-powered Piets (I know that these three were there - Kevin
Purtee, Gary and Shad Bell, and Tom Brown). Dick Navratil had his Rotec-powered
Piet, as well as his Continental-powered one. And I think almost everything
else was Continental-powered (except the Last Original or the Ford powered
Piets that are based at the field).
The weather was... interesting. Thunderstorms each night, and blistering heat in
the daytime, once the rain moved out. As a bonus, there was some humidity to
go with the heat. But there was lots of flying each day.
The food was ... well, you know they boil fish there, don't you. So, if you like
that, I guess it was "as usual" (good or bad). I didn't try the mosquitoes,
so I'm not sure how they were. Just kidding - they weren't too thick, but they
were present. Jack and Susan Textor made the generous offer to host a Friday
Bratwurst lunch, and followed through in colors, feeding something like 80 people.
I bet they won't make THAT mistake again! I don't care what anyone says,
I think Jack's not such a bad guy :). Seriously though, that was extremely generous,
Jack and Susan. Thank you. You are truly nice people.
There were a few long distance Piets - Kevin Purtee all the way from Texas (with
a crank-snapper, no less), Jack Grenier from Colorado (Jack is only 90 years
old), Larry Williams from Arkansas (Model A), Jack Phillips and Matt Paxton from
Virginia. Matt managed to overcome some difficulties with his prototype retractable
landing gear, and arrived on Friday afternoon. There may have been others
that also traveled long distances - sorry if I omitted you.
As usual, many acquaintances were rekindled, and many new faces were put to names,
and a good time was had by all. And, even though it's a day longer than it
used to be, the whole event seemed to go even faster than usual. They say time
flies when you're having fun, so I must have really been having fun.
Bill

Subject: | Question about model A build and pietenpol fuselage length. |
I have a Model A engine that I want to use. I am 5'10" tall and weigh 290 pounds.
Because I will make the tail heavy I am wondering what fuselage to build shorter
(1932) short (1933) or long? Thanks for any opinions that anyone may give.
Thanks

Subject: | Re: Three Years Yesterday |
Thank you Jake. Hang in there!
-
Attached is a picture I snapped today. I have the wings setup as good as I
know how to get them and I am quite pleased with the setup. Of course, they
will get tweaked as needed during flight tests.- So, I removed the tail
from the saw horse holding the fuselage level and set it down on the floor.
- I worked on rigging and making the aileron cables today and got them in
stalled. But I realized I blew the angles on the aileron pulleys, so I will
be re-making them. (this week...I hope.)
-
I am yet to sit in the plane with the wings on! I am going to wait until I
have the ailerons hooked back up so that when I do climb in, I'll have all
the controls operational for the first time.
-
Exciting times for sure!
-
Oh and for those back from Brodhead...welcome home!

I was in and out real quick trying to get north. I wanted to get there earl

I'm real sorry I missed you guys. I keep walking by Jack's Piet here at OSH
, but haven't seen him yet.
Axel is parked in the vintage area, of all places. :)

Shad, I really like the looks of your Piet. Mine will be very similar.
Is that a Cloudcars prop? I have put a deposit on one. Would you mind
giving some performance info, including RPM at various flight
conditions? Looks like it will do well. Chuck

A little after 11:00 today I was at my home airport, VPZ Porter Co. In. I heard
a call on the radio that a Curtiss was landing on 27. I ran outside to look and
to my astonishment it was a 1911 Curtiss Pusher. We must have been the next
stop after Plymouth IN. I didn't have a camera with me, but Jim Haklin was at
our EAA food booth and had a camera with him, so he took a bunch of shots. Later
this afternoon we had the Collings Foundation bring in their B-17, B-24 and
P-51.

Subject: | Re: Question about model A build and pietenpol fuselage |
length.
When we weighed the Pietenpols at Brodhead the other year there were no
"long fuselage" Model A Piets, just the standard fuselages from the Improved
plans. I chose the aircraft with the lightest tail by far at 4lbs on the
scale as the example to use for the calculations. I would
imagine, anecdotally, that the Corvair length fuselage is not going to help
matters with it comes to W&B. At your size though, you would probably find
the extra room far more comfortable, if not an absolute requirement. Note,
these figures deal with the potentially adverse CG situation you may find
yourself in...no pax, no fuel...
Running the numbers with this Piet as an example arrive at a maximum pilot
weight of 194lbs with the CG at it's aft limit, 20" aft of the leading edge.
If we put your 290lbs in that airplane the CG moves to 23.6" aft. To correct
this situation, you could move the engine forward or add weight up
front....obviously you don't want to add any more weight, and in either case
it is not the most efficient way to correct the aft CG. If you hung a Model
A 6 inches farther forward it would only net you a little more than a 2"
empty weight CG change, so you'd have to go farther still...and really look
goofy too.
Slanting the cabanes back will net you the most effective CG change, as you
are now moving the entire weight of fuselage, and you, forward in relation
to the datum (the leading edge of the wing). Running these numbers show you
will have to move the wing back at least 4"....if 290 is accurate...throw on
some winter clothes if you fly in colder weather and you should go back some
more.
To be frank, I would have practical concerns about using a Model A in your
situation. At your weight, passengers other than small children (read:
babies) would be pretty much out of consideration....probably anything
resembling a warm day too. Obviously I don't know how sprightly you are, but
common sense would dictate that at your dimensions even getting into a
"to-the-plans" Pietenpol is going to be rather challenging, if not
impossible.....
