      Kyle,

I just received this today, from fellow builder and all-around smart guy,
      Clif Dawson: http://www.woodbin.com/ref/wood/

Take a look at Eastern Hemlock and Western Hemlock...the differences say it
      all.

      Happy building,

Sorry, Kyle. I live on the west coast! I can't advise you to ignore AC43.13,
but...there was a time when airplanes got built without that...

      Gary,
I am curious about hemlock. AC 4313 calls out specifically Western Hemlock.
I called the lumber mill and they said all they had was Eastern Hemlcok,
which makes sense because I live on the east coast. Since you have worked
with this in the past, is there any real difference between the two?

During Copperstate week I met Gary Boothe at the local Spaghetti Company Restaurant
and was able to pick his brain for Piet info. I finally recieved the plans
and was able to go over a few details that had been unclear. Great company and
good info-Thanks Gary. Also Thanks to The creator of the West Coast Piet web
site as I have been lurking and have gleaned much useful info there as well
as to admire the rest of your finished Piet's and build progress.

Saturday at Copperstate I met Glider Mike and Dennis Hall. Dennis spent the day
showing off his fabulous Piet AKA Blue Heron Airplane. It was a chick magnet
and Dennis seemed up for the task. He seemed to relish his role as master builder/local
sex object. It was by far the largest crowd producer on the ramp.
That was with some other stunning airplanes vying for attention as well. It was
a pleasure to meet both and gain some much needed hands on with a well built
Piet. Thank you to all who tolerated my questions. Attached is a photo of the
Copperstate Riff Raff at Dennise's plane. The tall gentleman to the left is
my very good friend Dennis Mclain with whom I will be building the Piet. The middle
is Dennis Hall and the left is Glider Mike. All in all a great day at an
excellent Copperstate event. The weather was beautiful with very light winds.

         Cheers all,

Hi everyone, my first post was cut in two.

      Hello everyone!
This is my first time posting, but I am not new to the forum by any means.
I have been lurking on here for quite some time, and have learned a lot fr
om listening to you guys. Most of you seem to have some reasonable ideas f
or fixing the plans, some of which could be improved upon a bit, though. I
have dreamed of building my own airplane for many years, and I purchased a
full set of Pietenpaul plans several years ago. Since then, I have studie
d the plans and watched this list and figured out all of the changes that n
eed to be made to make the aircraft reasonably functional, and save money i

I have already designed my paint scheme, which I will keep a secret for now
(I would not want Gene Rambo to steal it), but it will modernize the look
of the airplane a lot. I also like the look of wire wheels, but the descri
ptions I have seen on here on how to build them seem too complicated. I am
wondering whether cable would be stronger than wire spokes. I am thinking
about lacing one continuous cable through all of the holes and pulling it t
ight with a single small turnbuckle. I would like to hear from anyone on h

I am still on the fence about an engine, but that can come last after the r
est of the airplane is built. All of the problems with the Ford crankshaft
s have me scared of those engines. I am planning on using some type of 4 c
ylinder car engine, like the Mopar or Chevy 2.2L out of a Cavalier or K-Car
(remember those?) great engine, though, some even turbocharged!
I notice on here that I can get a number of the components built for me, so
the plane can be done that much faster. I understand that Jack Phillips w
ill build wing ribs if you provide the wood. That would be a great help. I
was wondering, though, if he would build the Riblett ribs for me instead?
I would like the extra higher stall speed that airfoil gives me.
I have seen that other things like hinges are available for purchase, and I
would like to find someone to make all of the metal fittings. All of thes
e things should speed up the building process considerably.
I have never flown a tailwheel airplane, but I have flown almost a hundred
hours in CESSNAs, so I don=99t think I will have any trouble with the
Pietenpaul when it comes time for my first test flight, possibly next summ
      er or maybe fall.
That is all I have for now. I will keep the list informed of my progress.
I would appreciate it if all of you who can provide ready-made parts would
send me your contact information and a list of the items and prices you ca
n provide. I am always available to answer any questions you may have, and
to share my ideas to improve the basic Pietenpaul. I am looking forward t

| Subject: | Lycoming O-235 to purchase |

I need some advice from the group.

I have found a Lycoming O-235 engine in pieces here locally. Supposedly, the seller's
dad was an A&P and he had started to rebuild it when he passed away about
5 years ago. He says that he has the engine logbook for it, but he does not
know what aircraft the engine came out of, number of hours on the engine, etc.
It appears to have most of the parts, according to him. It has one magneto,
no carburetor, and the crank (I think) has a tag indicating it has been magna
fluxed. The case is together and has been painted, which would hint at the fact
it is a good case. He has sold other cases his dad had, and none of the buyers
complained later about the case they purchased being bad. He wants $950 for
      the lot.

I have not gone to look at it yet, but I wanted to ask some questions.

      1. Is the O-235 too heavy for the metal fuselage (13 and 1/2 foot length) that
I purchased recently. Is it going to give me any W&B issues in that combination?
      2. I am being honest here- I am not a gearhead, so what should I look for?
      3. Is that a good price for a good engine in pieces?
      4. Any other words of advice?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I think you can get some weight comparisons on-line- the price sounds pretty tempting
to me too. I do think I have seen in various posts that the 235 is getting
really expensive to overhaul due to really high prices of rings and other
key parts. also seems like there was a worse than average problem with them leading
up spark plugs.I'm sure I'll be corrected if that's not right but I believe
that's one reason a lot of folks have tried to go to other engines. Raymond

A search of the archives indicates this is a real person. Jack makes a post
earlier in the year about seeing Gene and his friend Pete Hays at the Twin
Rivers Falls flyin. However, since he's Gene's friend it is still entirely
      possible he's just joshing...

Terry I overhauled my O-235 about a year ago and the only parts that I bought that
were really expensive were the piston rings. They were $440 for a set. Look
at the valve lifters. If you need those they are $60 + each X 8. If the crankshaft,
camshaft, and crankcase are serviceable I would consider it worth the
money. It is heavier than the Continentals. Mine weighs 239# ready to run with
starter and no alternator. I gave $2000 for mine and lucked out. It was removed
from a 1971 Grumman AA-1 in 2000 for an O-320 upgrade and sat it a hangar for
9 years. It has 2050 hours on it. It had been top overhauled at 1600 hours
with chrome cylinders so that made my major relatively cheap because the pistons,
cylinders and valves were in good condition. I was expecting to pay $4000
or so for parts but wound up with about $1500. Spelled LUCK. Hope this helps and
      adds no confusion.

      Terry
I got my 235 for $1500 missing pots mags and carb
I brought an overhaul manual and got every part new that the manual recommended including .10 oversize pistons for about $2200 from http://aircraft-specialties.com/ not sure where they are but somewhere in the states.
I got the pot over here due to the cost of shipping
