      Gary,
Thanks for the link. I guess there really is no question these woods are dramatically
different. A lot of other good info on that site as well.

I had hoped more good info would be on for you by now. -the prices I have heard
posted since-haven't sounded too out of line.as soon as I said what I did about
the 235 I got to thinking it may be the O-290 that was the one that seemed
to be the more expensive one to get parts for.sorry if I gave any bad info. either
way if that case and crank is use-able- it sounds to me like a good deal.if
the weight is in the green- that should be a heck of a power plant on a Piet.might
be awful heavy with a starter but I bet they aren't that hard to prop.Raymond

I Have done some searches and the weight should be close to the Corvair but Jerry
      should have a better idea
I think around 250lbs but don't quote me on that it was a while ago

      Carson,

I used Avex pop rivets...had a bunch leftover from a previous project. The
heads of my rivet gun and puller are concaved out so that they leave a domed
head on the rivet...pretty cool. This was done according to the Zodiac 601
      plans.

Pro-seal worked great, but I have only run 5 gals of fuel thru the tank.

      Welcome to the list.

We are always looking for ways to build Air Campers more quickly. Out-sourcing
all the "Hard stuff" is a great idea and straightening out those impossible plans
is a great idea, too. I agree about those Ford engine cranks....never did
really see why people ever used them in the first place. Practically any other
4 cylinder car engine would be a good choice and there shouldn't be any major
problems modifying them to turn a prop.

I for one, am anxious to hear of your progress. Sounds like you've set a realistic
deadline for yourself and have some wonderful ideas to bring the old bird
into the 21st century. Can't wait to check out your paint scheme because I've
been stumped trying to figure out something that would make mine look more modern.

Even though you don't have any hands-on experience, you sound very knowledgeable
and might consider making and selling DVD's as you progress with your assembly
for those of us who don't have your vision or talents and for future builders.
It would be a shame for them to build to-th- plans when there is fresh thinking
and newer ideas to be taken advantage of.

Looking forward to pictures of your project!!

      Larry

ps. maybe I missed it but you didn't say where you are from. I get the feeling
that it could be south somewhere. Belize, perhaps???

Hey! Hey! HEY!- You better watch yourself Danny.- I can't be associated
with the original posting. It is OBVIOUS those ideas are clearly NOT the b
est improvements/mods. for the Pietenpol...if they were I would have come u
p with them first. The ideas posted can easily be improved, which I will do
as soon as I figure out how to butt weld my aluminum fuel tank using a han
dheld propane torch and SS welding wire.

The wing tank pictures I have seen posted, it appears that the inside baffl
es and outer end "rib" pieces have flanges bent on both the ends and the bo
ttom. If one set of bends are made across the grain, then the other set of
bends on that same piece would be with the grain. (yes?)

I assume the material was oriented so that all bends were diagonal to the g
      rain. Is this correct?---

Sometimes... no, A LOT of times it is necessary to have bends that are across the
grain and also with the grain. When bends are made parallel to the grain, a
larger radius needs to be used to avoid over-stressing the metal (cracking).
      That's life.

      Carson,

I first made 'backer plates' to receive sheet metal screws, but the covers
are sealed and held in place with the screws. Inner tank repairs will
require screw removal, then working the covers loose from the
      sealant...sorta like on a Mooney.

      Hello Everyone,

The Mountain Piet center section is ready for covering, see pic attached.
Can someone give me some advice on the best way to cover the cutout?

By the way, the wing panel is 95% varnished and almost ready for covering as
well. My goal is to fly Mountain Piet sometime this Winter. Should make it
      to Brodhead in 2012.

      Thanks,
