No inspection holes Carson. Not sure what sealant you mean, slosh? Just
using pro-seal, no slosh. Just coat joints with pro-seal before riveting,
then coat all outside seams and rivet heads. Also note the major bends are
with the grain. The side ribs are not.

A while back, within the last year I believe, Mr. Beck wrote a helpful
article about an intercom he purchased that was MUCH better than anything
else he had tried. I don't have it in front of me and don't remember the
name, but if you subscribe to the Brodhead Pietenpol Newsletter (and you
should.) ck your old issues. Or maybe someone here has them sitting around
and can come up with the brand name.

You either have a very good memory or you save the back issues of the
Piet newsletter. Probably both.
The article describes the problems I went through and how I arrived at
using a Flighttech ITC portable intercom.
For those coming to corvair college #21 to be held here at the Barnwell
airport [ KBNL ] on November 11,12,13 you can experience how well the
intercom works by getting a ride in my Piet.

long time. Are you keeping the Subaru engine?
As for covering the cutout, will there be a fuel tank in the centersection?
If so, I would recommend covering it with an aluminum sheet, for ease of
access to repair leaks or otherwise service the tank.

Seriously bummed, I start "reserve" (airline guy sitting around the phone who gets
called if someone cannot make it to work... car problems, gets sick, etc)
on the 12th so can't guarantee I'll make the fly in.
However, gonna try...
Notwithstanding, I got a back channel communication from Jar Head pilot with a
link to the Flight Tech line of inter comms. A nice mid range (price wise) line
of systems. Glad to hear an actual live recommendation that's completely on
point.
I'm going to email them and ask about mis matched headset compatibility, which
isn't specifically mentioned.
The more expensive one I reference is the PS Engineering PM1200, which seems bulletproof
and versatile. Also, if ALL the insides quit working it seems you can
just go PTT even with the intercom function.
The system I've got is simply VOX, which is fine if the headsets are perfectly
matched and if I put some effort in microphone wind protection, which I have not
yet done.
Kevin Purtee, if you're monitoring, what system do you have? I like the simple
PTT button on the dash of the pax cockpit.
I guess I shouldn't complain because as I research this whole deal, I realize that
ONE THOUSAND dollar headsets are common. Yikes. I guess I'm spoiled by the
generally unnecessary nature of them in airliners, the fact my $250 headset
from 13 years ago still works great, they supply nice $500 sets, etc. I guess
a $500 system that should work forever wouldn't be a horrible deal.
I really thought a simple (read non VOX, audio processor or ANR) system with independent
volume and PTT everything would be pretty easy to find. I guess I've
bought enough wiz bang electronics over the years that seem not to last long
is what really concerns me about these systems.

Brand name headsets and radio. They make the power supply/noise filter, antenna,
and control panel. Not cheap but the system works well.

Hi Vic,
The only covers I am working on right now are on our bed. I am making a gas tank;
at least I hope that is what it turns out to be. As I told Mike I had a tantrum
with the engine mount so am re-doing it. Details later.
Hangers up here are hard to get as well; one of my friends just got a guy to share
a hanger with him; TSA makes it not very friendly to the low and slow types.
Too much jet traffic and not enough close small airports.

Well, my Vair is running fine- I need to stop the roll occasionally and I could
sure use a parts breakdown picture for a Gerdes model 049-4 master cylinder.Yea-
I did pull it apart in the dirt and may have lost a part. I can always remove
the other one more carefully and look at it but it works and is bled.anyone
got a diagram they could email me? thanks.I searched the net a little but so

Yes, keeping the Subaru Jack. The first time it let's down, I'll fire it an
d replace it with a Corvair.
By John's design, the of the fuel tank is exposed. The tank is held in by b
olts that thread into the sides of the tank. My main concern is applying th
e fabric around the curved cutout. Don't want it to look sloppy. I have see
n some homebuilts with lumpy looking cutouts.
Yes, I know it's been a while. Life priorities have shifted enough, so I'm t
aking advantage of it. My oldest daughter got a ride in Greg and Dale's Pie
t a while back. Finally took my youngest daughter up in a Cessna and she lo
ved it. Now both are looking forward flying in our Piet!

Thanks Bill. It's a darn shame to cover up that pretty wood. The fuel tank goes
in the middle. John built a very nice wing tank that I will use. There will
be a nice storage compartment aft of the rear spar. This will also serve as
access to the aileron cables. I will have two removable boxes in the storage
area to keep stuff from touching the cables.

We too made our own tank=2C it was a bit of an ordeal. We thought we had a
good guy to weld it=2C one of my ex students who has a shop. He ruined it

It is sitting in the shop in the plane full of 100 low lead. So far so go

The only covers I am working on right now are on our bed. I am making a gas
tank=3B at least I hope that is what it turns out to be. As I told Mike I
had a tantrum with the engine mount so am re-doing it. Details later.
Hangers up here are hard to get as well=3B one of my friends just got a guy
to share a hanger with him=3B TSA makes it not very friendly to the low an
d slow types. Too much jet traffic and not enough close small airports.

Thanks for the info Kevin... that is a neat looking system.
When you say Brand Name headsets and radio, are you saying that you provided those
or are you using the items that they provided in one of their packages?
I have a PS Engineering Aerocom III and have loved using it it in closed cockpits,
but I'm told it is not suitable for open or noisy environments. I've been
considering the PM1200 due to the performance of the Aerocom III, but the MiracleAntenna
system looks pretty cool.

Hi Mark - Wish we could've talked you guys into Lake Whitney. Had a real nice
time. We're shooting for a spring campout. Love to see you there.
Yes, I bought their package. He says he built it all to work together. The electronics
gurus can fight that out. I didn't have anything so I needed it all
anyway. The radio's just a standard ICOM handheld with the extra power of the
antenna and the convenience of the aircraft power supply. I think the headsets
are lightspeed? Should be on the website. Anyway, I've used other headsets
- some work well and some don't.
Complete disclosure: I originally hid the antenna down the back of the fuselage
inside. I've had trouble talking to some control towers with that setup, having
to get quite close or approach from a different angle to talk. I've since
attached a redneck antenna holder that I install vertically if we're going into
a towered airport but will stow discretely if not.
I can hear control towers 20 miles away consistently no matter where the antenna
is. I sometimes have trouble talking to them, though. I can hear and talk
to other aircraft 30-50 miles away no matter where the antenna is.
One last point: the intercom system is really handy.

I took ownership of an engine (RH code) the other day from another builder. I have
not yet done anything with it (see photo, more available if you'd like). I
just received a call from a gentleman responding to an ad I placed in the local
Corvair groups newsletter looking for an engine. He has some (most notable:
110HP '65 and '66, one a shift and one an automatic...does not know engine code),
$100 each. He's within easy driving distance. I'm tempted to grab one or
two and if I don't need them, I'd have them if another builder could use them.
Where you able to use one engine, or did you need other engines to rob for parts?
Do you think I should pass on this or go check it out?

If it were in my area I would buy both engines if they were the correct 110

I went through this when I first got the Cub. Although I had two of the same headsets
(DC H10-30 with the same microphones, so you'd think they were impedance-matched),
the noise level differences (I mostly fly with the door open) between
the front and back seats created difficulty with the cheaper intercoms. Either
both headsets were continuously on, or you had to start each conversation
with some loud, rude noise to get it to open up. I started looking for a portable
with separate squelch (and optionally, volume) controls. Enter, stage right,
the PS Engineering Aerocom II (no longer made). I haven't felt the need to
look elsewhere since. I think I paid a couple hundred bucks for it back in the
mid-90's.
A couple years back, I was cruising the commercial hangars at SNF and stopped to
query one of the guys selling PS's stuff about the absence of squelch controls
on the new models. He said they were all automated now. While I haven't actually
flown with one, let's say there have been times in the past with other toys
when I'd rather have been given the choice instead of some engineer (and I
are one) who thinks he can dream up what I want bettern' me. As long as the Aerocom
II works, I've got no reason to play elsewhere anyhow.
The Aerocom also fail-safes to straight-through if it dies.

Have the seller peek down behind the oil filler tube and get the codes. Unless
it's covered up with gunk, it should be visibly stamped on the casting and should
only take a minute. Any more, enough people have fooled with Corvairs over
the years that you really can't trust the engine numbers to match up to the correct
transaxles. I've seen some pretty weird things done to these engines (found
a '61 distributor on a '66 engine once).

I have three extra crankcases, crankshafts, two rear oil housing, lots of sheet
metal, etc. A couple of engines did not have any sheet metal; i.e. rear shrouds,
under cylinder air shrouds, etc. but now have extras of most.
I think I have more than I need but it was made available at prices I couldn't
use.

HI Vic,
Couldn't find anyone here that was willing to weld the aluminium tank so went the
sealant route.
My main concern is how to get the ends of the tank to match well with the bottom
and top wrapped sheet. Looking at some of the tanks; i.e. Gary's, Jack Philips,
etc. the corners of their tanks look almost machine made. I wouldn't think
the sealant can handle much of a gap.
I am not done making the two ends and center baffle yet. I made all three together
and matched filed their periphery, then decided to make the center baffle
first bends first. Am still working on the top curve and hopefully start on the
two ends this weekend.
Have you got all the Piet painted yet and h as Mike got all his graphics on the
fuselage? The last picture I saw it was really looking nice with the green fuse
and white tail surfaces. Did you use an off-white or ?

What I do when I am making a riveted tank=2C the antique cars almost always
had them=2C was to make a MDF pattern that perfectly fit the shape=2C I wo
uld make two just the same=2C then sandwich the metal between and simply ha
mmer the flange over with a ball peen hammer. If done carefully the end wi
ll fit perfectly and will not have gapposis. Simple and easy. Just fit th
e MDF to the shape needed and away you go.
We have the wings to cover and paint. The graphics are mostly on. there a

Well I made some phone calls and found out Cleveland bought out Gerdes. got hold
of a Rep at Cleveland and he gave me a link to a website with a PDF file of
the various brakes.looks like I have the parts in the right place. ordered a new
O-ring kit from Aircraft Spruce. we'll see if it helps.

the advantage of having made aluminum ribs for a 601.same process.

I've been going for three years hoping to see a Pietenpol. I'd have to push mine
since, as my 6 year old constantly reminds me, I need wings and a propeller.

Hey Kevin, glad to hear that you guys had a good time at Whitney. Jasper was alright...
I think they topped out at 125 airplanes on Saturday, but only 20-25
camped either night. Our camp area was about 1/2 mile from the FBO, which meant
a bit of a hike for coffee and food. I think they had some entertainment
planned, but with the turnout so light some of that kind of fell apart. The Tulsa
area got pounded by storms Saturday night... those storms marched right down
through east Texas and hit Jasper around 5am, just in time to test out our
rain flys and keep us grounded till around 10 o'clock.
All in all it was a good time. Got to buzz down in a friend's Comanche 250. Tulsa
to Jasper in 2.25 hours... we were cruising!
Thanks for sharing the intercom info with us. Let me know about the spring camp
out plans as the time gets closer.
