Great to hear you are getting some time in. You guys sure have flown that thing
a lot. I got a little time in last night just before sunset. Was really beautiful
in Ohio. You need to get skis! Heck with the cold air. It's really
not that bad. Kind of a state of mind. Ha! Maybe a stupid state of mind! I've
had mine on skis each winter for the past 5 years. I can't wait! There's

Subject: | Corvair college #21 at Barnwell, S. C. |
The registration for Corvair College # 21 has closed. Approximately 70
people have registed to attend on November 11, 12, 13.
For those who are attending and want to "talk" a little Pietenpol, Don
Harper and I will hold an informal "Brodhead type" forum on Sat morning
in my hangar.
This is in no way intended to draw anyone away from the main focus of
the college , which is learning about and building corvair engines for
homebuilt planes. William Wynne will have many parts avaliable as well
freely sharing his vast knowledge about building corvair engines.
Don will have his Piet project on display. Wings complete but not
covered, fuselage about complete on wheels with center section, tail
feathers and corvair engine installed. We will also show those just
getting started how easy it is to build wing ribs.
Come and be prepared to have a enjoyable time and learn a lot. Also
join the list of more than 200 who have taken a ride in my corvair
powered Piet.
thanks,
P. F. Beck

I will be in town on Friday. Any Pietenpol people other than the Corvair guys
going to be hanging out at the airport Friday??

Peter,
This Piet was built in San Diego by a friend of mine. It had a Cont. engine on
it. I believe it to be a A-75. He sold it years ago and it went to Washington
state. Apparently it was sold again to the guy in Ohio. I didn't know it went
there.
Since it has change hands so many times, it is hard to say what engine it had at
the time or any other changes were made to it.
Here is a link that showed it when it was in Washington.

I was thinking of doing that(skis).- The problem down here is usually if
it snows, it warms up the next week enough to make a muddy mess, or we don'
t get enough to make it worth while.- I have flown it in 29 degrees on Th
anksgiving morning a couple years ago, it was spitting snow as I taxied bac
k to the hangar.- All I needed was insulated coveralls, long johns, ski m
ask and goggles, warm gloves, and a belly full of hot coffee to get me out
there. I am waiting to se if Bill See puts his skis on his champ this year,
I would love to try it.

Crash
A crop duster once told me that if you have to crash into a woods, don't
stall the plane as this will cause the nose to drop into the ground, rather
fly into the bushiest part of the tree and this will adsorb the impact.
Also if on a landing you have to run into trees, center the plane between
the trees. This will take the wings off, adsorb the impact, save the
engine prop and pilot and prevent a fire, and increase the possibility of a
rebuild. Brad Williams

29 degrees, my God are you all Viking descendant's?
In Arizona we don't pull it out of the hanger if it dips below 60.
We would actually have to wear long britches and socks if
we did anything that crazy. : )
BTW-Finally have wood and shop set up in garage. Awaiting T-88 from ACS

Yes its true, as Luck would have it and early this year down trodden and ou
t of work I decided to try my luck at magnanimous gestures of proactive yes
its true lawn care. I got the old tractor battery charged up drove the ca
rt down to the brush pile and warmed up the tractor I had just repaired. Fu
ll scale deck rebuild, hangar style, zerks and all. Sears doesn't put them
in so you blow out mower spindles when the bearings go away. Not this guy j
uss too dam smart for the old Sears dry bearing trick.
So smart as I am, I got the rebuilt out fueled her up with the special blen
d of my secret treated, naturalized and stabilized fuel, yes sir I did that
and proud to tell ya bout it. I got me a good cut going and drover over th
e leaves on the ground reducing the rake out and blower time. I am all over
this. The next morning at 0810 or there about's I noticed the white stuff
beginning to appear and more and more appeared until the grass became white
and the leaves mulched an driven down into the depths of the rhizomes and
tillers of the fescue, I was doing it and without might I say without the e
ncouraging tone of my lovely life partner and voice of all knowledge, yes t
he Princess of the Nile and she who shall not be denied.
There we were all ground up the lawn white with yes the noreaster snow of t
he east coast whopper wet snow storm in full force. Life is good and the la
wn officially dead, nothing could have survived that bit of weather, not ev
en the trees and branches fallen due to the storm. But yet well before the
official beginning of Buildapalooza 2011 and 12. some how being out of work
gives buildapalooza much less meaning but still a viable on my calendar an
d no longer the holiday of the troll as in a real hangar, no more cellar dw
eller for me.
Paying for the hangar well that plan has yet to experience some additional
growth and development issues that need to be ironed out. Not withstanding
though, here we are on the cusp of Buildapalooza and ding dong the yard is
dead ding done the stinkin yard is dead, hi ho the merry O the stinking yar
d is dead. But now since all the leaves have yet to fall it looks like we h
ave another tractor day of leaf grinding to continue the weed and weed grow
th cycle.
It just seems too early for the dead yard rant but its here and so here is
the annual dead yard rant with 4 part harmony and feeling. Ding dong the ya
rd is dead, ding dong the stinkin yard is dead now back to Lancaster Aeropl
an Works for more building, gluing and rebuilding septin it gets cold in th
ere and the ceiling is next , no sense trying to heat the upper space and l
etting the heat go away. So tarp city here we come in preparation for you g
uessed it Buildapalooza 2011- 2012. I wonder if I'll actually get anything
accomplished. The problem with having a shop and tools there is so much oth
er stuff you can do and make its just amazing how quickly the hours of ligh
t and warmth seem to evaporate in the mangar that's short for man hangar.
Okay got to keep focused flying machines. Oh yes and with the gas grill 2 f

Peter,
This Piet was built in San Diego by a friend of mine. It had a Cont. engine
on it. I believe it to be a A-75. He sold it years ago and it went to
Washington state. Apparently it was sold again to the guy in Ohio. I
didn't know it went there.
Since it has change hands so many times, it is hard to say what engine it
had at the time or any other changes were made to it.
Here is a link that showed it when it was in Washington.

You must fly a lot more than me, I have only got about 30 hrs this year, Da
d probably only 4-5hrs.- I am gonna have to sit him down and have a long
talk, thats not enough flying.

Hey shad you and I are about in the same place I have 302 hours on mine as
of this past weekend. 102 of those since the Roy's bearing upgrade at Barnw
ell last November.

Well, call me the greedy self-absorbed consumer. I only contributed
enough to qualify for the Matronics archive CD. But let me rant on.
This list, the Piet list, has been one of the most wonderful and
encouraging venues for all of my experimental aviation activities.
Through this list I have met dozens of ardent, avid, clever, experienced
individuals who love flying and building as much as I do, and are
happy and willing to share everything they have and know, with me.
All of you are treasures of building and flying experience and
enthusiasm to be shared, and you have been more than willing to
share with me. I appreciate it, and look forward to yet another
year on this list with you.
I have flown with a couple of you, met another couple of you, shared
a beer with one or two (Jim Markle even paid for both of ours!), looked
at our airplanes, chatted, but mostly we have exchanged ideas and
experiences right here at our keyboards and computer screens. It's a
strange and disjointed way to experience people and airplanes, but
what I have found is that in real life, all of you and all of your
airplanes and shops are so much warmer, and more genuine, and more
likeable than your online presence that it's truly a shame that the
world wide web brings such a huge geographically distant group together-
because it's likely that many of us will never actually meet in person.
I have Piet friends in dozens of states of the Union, and almost as
many countries of the world. The Air Camper is a wonderful ambassador
of good will and should be appointed to some sort of honorable
position by somebody, somewhere, as fostering good international
relations. Take somebody flying in a Piet, they grow a smile, we
forget our differences and remember why we are all on the planet
together.
Let's don't blow it by letting occasional flare-ups erupt. There is
too much here of enduring fun, entertainment, and education to allow
a few personal differences to separate us. If all I have is a drawing
or picture of a Piet on my wall, I feel as close to all of you as if
I had a dozen of them in my hangar, with different engines and paint
schemes, because we all know and love the Piet even though we recognize
all of the differences in the individual ones and their owners (or
those who only dream of being an owner, builder, or pilot). I was
all of those things at one time, and never all of them at the same time.
But I've always been a dreamer.
I hope to be able to form up on your wing sometime, just as good ol'
"Axel" Purtee snuck up and formed up on my starboard wing a year
ago, and we made a flight of two, if only for a short while. And
I readily yield to the man who has 100HP on the nose... he out-climbed
me, hands down. However, next time I'll catch him with the sun in
his eyes and surprise on my side and he will be all mine ;o)
