Yeah, I know the feeling Shad. I'm about to go for my CFII flight test, but
I don't have an airplane with any instruments in it.

I will be out of town, I wish I could make it. I don't think I have got my
butt out of bed in time to fly to breakfast since Brodhead, 2nd shift does
that to me, dont get in till 1am. I am hoping I have my I.A. before I fly
      the next time.

I was thinking of doing that(skis). The problem down here is usually if it
snows, it warms up the next week enough to make a muddy mess, or we don't
get enough to make it worth while. I have flown it in 29 degrees on
Thanksgiving morning a couple years ago, it was spitting snow as I taxied
back to the hangar. All I needed was insulated coveralls, long johns, ski
mask and goggles, warm gloves, and a belly full of hot coffee to get me out
there. I am waiting to se if Bill See puts his skis on his champ this year,
I would love to try it.

Great to hear you are getting some time in. You guys sure have flown that
thing a lot. I got a little time in last night just before sunset. Was
really beautiful in Ohio . You need to get skis! Heck with the cold air.
It's really not that bad. Kind of a state of mind. Ha! Maybe a stupid
state of mind! I've had mine on skis each winter for the past 5 years. I
can't wait! There's nothing like it.

Agree, he sure will be missed. The first year I went to Brodhead (2002) I took
a LOT of videos...and he seems to show up a lot in those videos. I (thank goodness!)
ended up with a lot of video taken in his hangar. I'm especially glad
      I have them now.

I know this is part of life but....

Jack, after your CFII test I would like to speak to you about the process of becoming
a CFII. I have my Advanced Ground Instructor rating and would like to get
my instrument ticket next (along with instrument Ground Instructor), then my
commercial followed by my CFI and then CFII.

I would like to be prepared to be a flight instructor as my "retirement" career.

      Blue Skies,
      Steve D

Shad, if you are really looking for a Luscombe, A friend of mine (Vern Foster)
      has his for sale.
If I remember correctly, his is a 1939 Luscombe (the LSA) . I don't know the hours,
but I know it is is great shape and he wants under $20,000.

I hope to take the Colorado Pilots Association Mountain Flying course from Vern
this next spring. He is 95 and started flying in 1939. He has forgotten more
about flying than I will ever know.

if Bill See puts his skis on his champ this year, I would love to try it.

      Steve,

Another good mountain flying instructor is Larry Duane. He's the
flight instructor that worked with my son through to his ASEL in our
      Pacer. Here's Larry's website:
http://www.coloradobackcountryfliers.com. He's based out of Longmont,
Colorado, which is where our hangar and Pietenpol project are located.

      Scott,

Thanks for the info; like you said wonder if the Cont. was tampered with over the
      years.

wow! what a nose! looks like you can really stretch your legs in there... did he
have a gas tank behind the engine then?

We have the room for it, but really after flying the Piet for an 1hr I'd like to
land... if you know what I mean.

Ours have a C-65 and it already seems like plenty of power, I guess if you are
close to the mountains it's always welcomed!

I like you crop duster advise,

      take care,

      Hi Peter,

I don't remember if that piet had a nose tank. I have a tank in the nose (10 Gal)
and one in the center section(12.5Gal). The one in the nose is from an Opal
Kadet car and the one in the center section is a Cessna 140 wing tank. I have
a C-85 and burn between 5 and 5.9 GPH depending on how I have the plane loaded.
The plane will fly longer than my backside will. But it is still nice
to have the extra range when needed.

      Hi Don
We had a beautiful day yesterday and I also got out for an hour. I went
over a Ski area to the north and saw a pretty good pile of snow on the
hills. All together just a wonderful day.

Has anyone had any experience with a Franklin 65hp? There is one for

      Hi Brian
Keep in mind - in SLC 65 horses are going to be pretty anemic.
I used to fly a Cessna 140 out of SLC #1 with a C-75 and in the summer we'd
be doing well to clear the power lines up by Skypark.

As one of the less common 65HP engines out there parts are going to be more
difficult to find.....and at only $200, that would suggest that it is going
to need plenty of work to make it usable.....thusly far more expensive of a
proposition than more common options (small Continentals, Corvair, etc etc).

On the other hand, if you've got $200 burning a hole in you pocket, and
want a conversation piece for your hangar..... :P

The 65 Franklin is pretty much a boat anchor. It is pretty animec compared
to the A-65. Parts have not been made in a lot of years. Franklins are now
made in Europe and parts for new engines are difficult to get.

I agree with all the above. Buy it if you want to make a piece of furniture out
of it. It doesn't make 65 hp.

I agree with all the above. Buy it if you want to make a piece of
furniture out of it. It doesn't make 65 hp.

I couldn't even stay current at that rate. We used to have to get 4 hrs
per month to draw flight pay and that was not enough for me.

You must fly a lot more than me, I have only got about 30 hrs
this year, Dad probably only 4-5hrs. I am gonna have to sit him down
and have a long talk, thats not enough flying.

I got about an hr on the piet today. It was in the
mid 50's and just a bit of a breeze, clear and dusty from the
harvesters. The midwest is an awsome place to fly this time of year,
you can land in about 90% of the area under you, it is mostly flat cut
off fields. I am shooting to break the 300hr mark on 92GB before
putting it up for the winter, 2.5 hrs to go.

The 65hp Franklin was a 4 cyl engine made in the 1940s. It was a very
smooth runing and quiet, but less powerful than the Cont 65. Later in the
1960 s Franklin made a 2 cyl 60 hp eng that was used in a Champion
      aircraft. Brad Williams

Don, thank you for the update on Mehlin Smith. My first ride in a
Pietenpol was a Model A powered red machine that I am quite sure Mehlin
owned at the time but was being flown by another gentleman when I got my
ride. It was a noisy, windy, wonderful experience. I think of it often
as I struggle to make some progress on my very slow project.
