Of course now my cabane fittings are powder coated but I s uppose the fabric will make inspecting for cracks difficult anyway. Someho w I have faith in those with the thickness of the 4130 and the professional tig welds my friend carried out. Also they arent as exposed to vibration like the engine mount. I have a few hours this morning so I am going to st art cutting metal for my control system. Looks like a fun project. For this reason it is probably best to avoid powde rcoating critical structural components (like the motor mount)=2C and just use a good enamel paint instead. Should a crack develop in the one of these parts=2C the enamel paint will also crack=2C making it easier to detect. > > Bill C. > > > > > Read this topic online here: > > http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=357254#357254 > > > > > > > =========== =========== =========== =========== =========== > > > ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:14:45 AM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Center Section progress From: "Bill Church" The cabane fittings should be just fine. First off, they do not even carry much load, and secondly, the welds are not really structural, since the fittings are comprised of a channel inside another channel, and the welds are primarily just to hold the two parts in place relative to each other. If those welds were to fail completely, they still would not come apart. As you say, the welds were professionally done, and will not be subject to vibration, so cracking is not likely at all. I'd really only give some thought to the major load carrying parts like the motor mount, lift struts, etc., where a failure would be catastrophic. Bill C.
