Carson,
Thanks for posting this. I had not seen it. Calling this politically-tainted and
posted for political reasons is unfair. Not sure where that was pulled out of.
Especially on Veterans Day. Sounds to me, we have some here that are a bit
too politically sensitive. I do believe this should be a no politics zone, but
I don't see where this was political. Some on the list tend to jump pretty hard
on opinions which they disagree, Pietenpol related or not. This can really
have a dampening effect. Nobody likes their opinions bashed. Play nice! Time to
go build an airplane.
A big THANK YOU to all those who have served our great country!

Subject: | Re: off topic but true |
Well, the fact this particular viral email is distributed by the "right" (I got
this a couple years ago from a really right wing freak buddy of mine), and it's
not quite accurately depicted, calling it somewhat political isn't a huge stretch...
but I digress.
Keep in mind I'm a registered Republican, union member (can you say dichotomy?),
who only votes for local politicians. I'm about as apolitical as they get...
but again, I digress.
The phenomena is true. I live in Chickamauga GA. Ever hear of it? As someone
who is usually with an entirely new set of folks EVERY working day of my life,
this comes up a lot in "single serving" conversations. I can positively state
that in the MANY hundreds of folks I've asked (if not thousands), 99 percent
state they've never even heard the word.
However, I also live about 6 miles from a short lived national news making tragedy
where the owner of a crematorium simply stacked up the bodies he was supposed
to cremate (due to a broken oven) and handed back bags of ash and concrete.
About 80 percent of the people I talk to (if not more) know of this... Once
it was determined he was a little tweaked, and not the leader of some weird
satanic ritual cult, the story was dropped.
Sad people know of that guy, but not the second largest battle of the civil war.
Some 30,000 guys died, at their brothers' hands, in two days. As far as I
can tell, the US population back then was about a tenth of what it is today, so
that's like 300,000 folks being killed these days. And it wasn't the largest
battle of the war, and only in second place by a really small margin.
I guess the culpable result of a 24hr news cycle. Another pattern I notice is
that most of the naturalized citizens I meet DO know of the Battle of Chickamauga.
This being Vet's day, I also sincerely thank all of those who served!

Dear List,
Please indulge my use of this valuable forum to wish all active duty military,
their families, and all who have served our country in the past a peaceful and
happy Veterans Day. It is because of your selfless service and sacrifice that
we all enjoy living in a free society.
With gratitude,
KMH Heide
PS...
I was with Bravo Company - Weapons Platoon, during the Ronald Reagan years. After
a short stint in mortars, I boxed for the Marine Corps and spent the next years
of my service traveling and representing the Marines in the ring. I ended
my career as a military police officer.
In addition, I can say with great reassurance, the history of this great country
and of the people who served, I have been schooled better than any college course
or could ever teach! US History is a big part of the Marine Corps teaching
and enjoyed ever moment of it. Semper Fi

My heart goes out to all the veterans. You guys are the backbone of
America. You are the reason I can do most anything I want. Freedom has a high price.
I wanted to serve but was turned down on blood pressure.
Where is Gardner. He served in the Marines. I think he flew pistons and jets.
My two boys served in the Navy. Without our military there would be no
America.

I was an AT (avionics tech) in the Navy attached to HS-2. Just out of A school
I was flown aboard the carrier Enterprise on April 30, 1975 to meet up with my
squadron in the South China Sea. That evening we participated in Operation
Frequent Wind, the evacuation of the U.S. embassy in Saigon. General Quarters
was sounded and I was told to go to my bunk because I didn't know squat about
ship operations yet. We went into territorial water for a brief period then
pulled back out to sea. When it was all over I returned to my shop. That was
the last official day of the Vietnam War and I was now a Vietnam vet and have
the medals to prove it! When people ask me about how it was in Vietnam I tell
them I don't like to talk about it and now you know why. [Laughing]

Did anyone catch Douwe on Fow and Friends this morning? He and members
of the Army who served in Afganistan were on being interviewed about
Douwes sculpture. It was a great segment and lasted about 4 minutes.
Great job Douwe
