Subject: What's Your Contribution Used For?
Dear Listers, You might have wondered at some pointd, "What's my Contribution used for?" Here are just a few examples of what your direct List support enables... It provides for the expensive, commercial-grade Internet connection used on the List. It pays for the regular system hardware and software upgrades enabling the highest performance possible for List services such as the Archive Search Engine, List Browser, and the Web Forums. It pays for over 21 years (yeah, I really said *21* years) worth of on line archive data available for instant search and access. And, it offsets the many hours spent writing, developing, and maintaining the custom applications that power this List Service such as the List Browse, Search Engine, Forums, and Wiki. But most importantly, your List Contribution enables a forum where you and your peers can communicate freely in an environment that is free from moderation, censorship, advertising, commercialism, SPAM, and computer viruses. It is YOUR CONTRIBUTION that directly enables these aspects of Matronics List services. Please support it today with your List Contribution. Its one of the best investments you can make in your Sport! List Contribution Web Site: http://www.matronics.com/contribution or, you can send a personal check to the following address: Matronics / Matt Dralle 581 Jeannie Way Livermore, CA 94550 Thank you for your support! Just got back Sunday night from one of the most enjoyable weekends I've ever had (excluding those I have had with my friend, my wife.) I went down with a short block (crankshaft and cam shaft installed between two halves of the case.) Came home with the engine in the condition shown in the attachment. I was hoping to run the engine for the first time, but was delayed the first two days waiting for Dan Weseman to get around to me to correctly install the 5th bearing. Got most of the work done on Saturday night and Sunday morning with a lot of help from John Franklin and his friend, Ken. Wish I could have run it, but that will just have to wait until the fuselage is far enough along to hang the engine on it. Chuck

Hey all! I've been completely out of touch with everything for about three weeks as I've been finishing the NYC monument and installing it. Just got back and saw some nice comments on the forum and wanted to say thank you!, and apologize for being tardy in responding. I just haven't been around my computer. It's been a wonderful opportunity and experience working with our Special Operations community, very humbling when you begin to learn what they are off doing for us while we are safely sleeping in our beds at night. Main thing I'm looking forward to is getting back to the Piet!! Thanks again! Douwe

Thank you all for your replies and an interesting side topic! I found that on my first rib the gusset didn't hold along the lower capstrip beneath the nose block and there was spring in the capstrip. I did sand the ply beforehand so hope that wasn't an issue, guess it was ok as no other gusset didn't glue. I just reglued that piece and stapled it rather than weighting down then applied a slightly larger gusset to the reverse as I think the first was a little small and stapled that, worked a treat then. Also had someone with a lot of experience show me the glue process so guess that wasn.t a problem either! Only another 27 to make now! John: I will assume (and I know the problems with that) that you are using T-88 for your glue. This is a very easy to use product but there is at least one thing you need to be careful of - Stop glueing parts with the current batch when you start to have the unused glue begin to stiffen up. The glue has to penetrate the wood to a degree in order for the bond to be strong. If the glue is already starting to set up it skins over and will not penetrate. Thus your parts do not bond correctly. If you are a cheapskate like me you tend to not want to waste any of that precious glue so you keep using it past where it is wise to do so. Just my $ 0.02. I used the GN-1 airfoil because I had a drawing of it and started building ribs before I got the Pietenpol plans. I can't see that much difference in them. The Piet rib looks like it is a bit more "skinny" at the nose than the GN-1 rib. Regardless, I am stuck with what I have because both wings are finnished. I know the GN-1 flies because I've seen pictures of one in the air. Incidentally, I did not have to pre-bend the lower capstrip. I did on the first couple of ribs I did and then tried one in the jig dry and un-pre-bent and it worked fine. I did a search, but was unable to find any information on wing height above the fuselage, limitations. I was able to sit in Tim's aircraft and thought that his 2" more than was the plans specify was OK, but what if i wanted to add an inch or two more than that? Has anyone raised the wing 4"? Are there any adverse effects? Thanks Joe Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=358040#358040

Joe, I'm not sure about there being any ill effects from raising it that much, b ut in my humble opinion I think it would begin to look odd and somewhat un- Pietenpolish. Hi Joe, According to the notes from Bernard Pietenpol he raised the wing; i.e. lengthened the cabane struts 4 inches on one of his last Corvair powered plances but thought it looked a little too high but the airplane flew fine. Look in the supplemental notes that come with the complete plan set from the Pietenpol family. I raised mine three inches and it looks fine to me; but caveat is its not flying yet. Jim B.

Yes, my good friend Dennis Mclain the Barntoon cartoonist is having a lot of fun with my building a Piet. : ) As a matter of fact most of his cartoons are poking fun of somebody in our little local group. I do not yet have the fuselage going but facts won't slow Dennis down. : ) I have the tail feathers mostly done and would have been into the fuselage but Dennis Hall invited me to Tucson last Sunday. He graciously let me try his Piet on for size as well as opening up all of the inspection ports for me to see and photograph all the inner workings. A very classy thing for him to do but for those that know him, already knew he was that kind of guy. The hands on with a finished one has clarified a lot of little details. It also made for some very cool pictures when I stuffed my Nikon inside and snapped away. See ya, Bryan -------- Workin Piet 5289B While I may not always be right, I apologize well. 2 cents -- Raising the wing farther above the thrust line should make it pitch more with power changes. It would also act as if more dihedral was added.
