Thought the list would benefit from this... and maybe keep all of us a
little safer in the skies.
Motion Induced Blindness - video
ATC, radar controllers and pilots know this but who would have thought about
drivers. Unfortunately we know that's not a problem for the people texting
while driving.
Indirect observation is pretty critical for preserving night vision while
driving at night also.
This is frightening! It works exactly like it says, and is one major reason
people in cars can look right at you (when you're on a motorcycle or
bicycle)--- AND NOT SEE YOU.
>From a former Naval Aviator. This is a great illustration of what we were

>momentarily, and repeat the process. I can remember being told why this was
>the most effective technique to locate other aircraft. It was emphasized
>(repeatedly) to NOT fix your gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any
>single object.
The instructors, some of whom were WWII veterans with years of experience,
instructed us to continually "keep our eyes moving and our head on a swivel"
because this was the best way to survive, not only in combat, but from
peacetime hazards (like a midair collision) as well.
We basically had to take the advice on faith (until we could experience for
ourselves) because the technology to demonstrate it didn't exist at that
time.
Click on the link below for a demonstration ...
http://www.msf-usa.org/motion.html [Target fixation is also a phenomena
that plays into this.]

And there's a reason for builders to take heed. Don't ask me how I know, but let's
just say it has to do with having your airplane up on sawhorses with the gear
leg attach bracket weldments in pieces in your hand. It's not a very beefy design
in the original setup.

Looks like the ones on the Indian were used with solid tires, maybe the introduction
of pneumatic tires made the design not so popular?
Cool idea and look, it amazes me some of the designs of the past that are forgotten.
Really look good on the Indian, a polished functional pair would look
great on a Piet....

Probably because of either materials/mfg methods of the time... or advertising.
Recall the generally considered more better beta got beat by vhs, and the Allis
Chalmers snap coupler fell prey to the (ford or deere?) 3pt hitch.
Doesn't mean it wouldn't work really well now. Appears there were all sorts of
rube goldberg methods of doing this, but those ackerman's look pretty good.

Chuck Steve, and Gardiner,
I went through Primary at North Field at Whiting in 1981, and Helo Training at
South Field in 1982. I came back in 1987 and 1988 as a Primary Instructor in VT-3.
A great time of great flying. Some of the best times of my life. I would
go back tomorrow if I could.
Steve, tell your son to have a great time cause it only comes around once. I still
have friends from that time that I keep in touch with over 30 years later.
And to the rest of the group, thanks for letting a bunch of old Naval Aviators
commandeer the topic and reminisce a little.

Fred,
There are websites that have free software that you can use to design your instrument panel: http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/
is one example.
Some of the instruments have recommended cutout dimensions, but not all. I waited
until I had the instruments before cutting the holes. To cut the bigger and
non-standard holes I used a fly-cutter bit and it worked well on my drill press.
Good luck,

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Instrument Panel?
This might seem like a simple question to some. When you laid out your
instrument panel did you purchase the instruments first so you could trace them
on to the panel? How did you know what size hole to cut out for each?
Thanks,
Fred

Aircraft instruments are pretty standard in size, really only two
sizes. I used automotive oil pressure and temp gauges, and they are a
third size. The Pietenpol panel sits pretty low to your line of site,
so you really need to sit in the pilot's seat and figure out where to
put them so you can see them. I have a mechanical tach, that required a
90 degree adapter to hook up the tach cable. I had to rotate the oil
pressure/temp gauges so I would be able to see them properly. I cut all
the holes with a special hole saw you mount in a drill press, as my
panel is oak plywood.

Chuck,
Looks to be an ad similar to what would be found in the old Aerial Age
magazines....1910's-20's era....

Assuming I'll ever have a flyable airplane, I'll have to join up as -4. I
haven't flown decent formation since 19'76. (Wings at Beeville in 19'73).

We can get "Tools" to fly in the formation as well. I am assuming that we would
be flying step up (for better visual for the wingman) like I did flying Helos,
not step down like I did instructing in T-34C's in Pensacola.
But wouldn't a 4-ship fan break be a real hoot? Just a thought.

Curtiss Jenny with Ackerman wheels (and Olmstead prop):
I've heard that they didn't work out so well as airplane wheels since they couldn't
take much of a side load.
Also used on the Martin Kitten, which is now at NASM (in storage I think, used
to be on the tour at Silver Hill though):

Terry,
I confess to getting a little queasy thinking about multi-bird formations
in helos.
I think a fan break in Piets might be a little underwhelming, but we sure
sure could have a tight pattern.
That evokes images of a flight demonstration team; think "ThunderPiets" or
"Wood Angels."

Mike,
Tight formation, for sure. Yeah, I guess you are right about the fan break. It
would be underwhelming in comparison to other fan breaks, but it would still
be a lot of fun!
Rotor wash was definitely a factor to be avoided in flying help formation, hence,
the step up, but any formation is fun formation. I was on a layover in London
last summer and went out to see my friend Peter Wright, a Piet owner. I ended
up flying a J4Cub Coupe and flew some formation on a Tipsy Trainer. What a
blast it was to fly formation again!

The Olmstead prop on the JN-4 sure does resemble the recent Ellipse racing props
seen on some modern composite (plastic, that is) airplanes. And it was just
last summer that I saw some inventor had created a bicycle with steel wheels/tires
that very closely resembled the Ackerman wheels. I guess it goes to show
that there really are not that many new ideas in aviation.
