Subject: | Primed metal fittings |
Yesterday I primed some wing fittings with an epoxy primer. The parts of the fittings
that will extend out beyond the surface will be painted eventually to
match the color scheme of the aircraft. Is it oaky to leave the hidden fittings
with just a primer on them? I am concerned only about future corrosion.

It is not only OK, it's standard practice. Why add the weight (paint is
actually pretty heavy) where it is not needed?

Agreed!- All of my metal fittings that need to be attached prior to fabri
c are just in primer. The exposed metal will be painted after fabric applic
ation to match their location color.

Got the idea from Rick Holland.
ACS sells them, they are "Ray Allen trim systems".
I didn't get the fancy position indicator or anything, just a switch and a
servo. I'm being lazy and trying to just get done so I'm just making a
hinged trim tab off the back edge of the elevator. Rick did a much nicer
installation where he cut out a trim tab and did all that.

Douwe, if I may...
I have seen pictures of your plane and the work you have done on it and thi
nk it is great. Most of what you have done is original and new and requires
a lot of work and talent. I would guess that if you start to rush things n
ow, you will regret it later. The workmanship and quality may not meet the
rest of the aircraft. You may miss the time frames you would like to meet,
but the entire plane will be the way you want it.
Just my personal thought.

Douwe, The trim I have is controlled by a lever next to me and and the wire
runs thru a bowdon cable=C2- to the elevator trim which is 9 by 6 inches
wide. It works very well but it is heavy. I think the servo would be a bet
ter way to go. Gardiner

Very good Andrew. I have needed to do that on several occasions with engines that
have sat around awhile. Glad it worked for you.
