Thank God you are OK, that is the main thing. So sorry for this mishap. Sav

The EAA wood book is worth havng, as is their aircraft welding book. Among
other things, their welding book tells how to flatten the ends of tubing and
there are several places on a Pietenpol where this technique is required.
With those 6 books, virtually everything you need to know to build a
      Pietenpol is covered.

Well guys, I put N7035N down on a farm turn row in OK last saturday.
      Hung a
wing on the corn and did the slickest "hide the airplane in the corn"
      trick
you ever saw. Pictures attached. I've always told my wife that if I ever
      had
to set the piet down in an emergency that I might bend the plane but
wouldn't bend me. Proved the plane is a very tough little critter. Only
broke the tailwheel and tailpost. It never did back up well and I guess
backing into a muddy corn field is even worse.

Funny part is as much as I've enjoyed the plane, I haven't flown it
      enough
to justify the costs of housing and insuring it. June 2 was our 40th
      wedding
anniversary, so my gift to my wife was getting rid of the plane. I
determined to sell it when I got back from flight to Texas and back from
Tennessee. On leg out of Davis Field, Muskogee, OK (MKO) I was climbing
      out
and lost power. Just like I'd pulled the throttle. The FAA folks at the
      FSDO
have convinced me it was carb ice. I've always pulled carb heat landing,
      but
never on takeoff. Conditions were just perfect for ice. Super high
      humidity
with unseasonable cold after thundershowers. I had to wait on the ramp
      for
traffic to clear so had been running it a bit. Anyway, that's my story
      and
      I'm sticking to it.

If anybody wants to shortcut building a GN1 variant of the Pietenpol, do
      I
have a deal for you. I just didn't want to sell the plane and look over
      my
shoulder with liability issues for the next 20 years. So I'm
      decertifying it
and selling it for parts. Catch is it's a complete plane with A65, wings
completely unharmed. Only damage to the fuse is the the
      tailwheel/tailpost,
and a bent carb heat box. No prop strike and I have a brand new
      Cloudcars
prop, only flown to Texas and part way back. I took the prop off to hang
      on
the wall but could be talked out of it. Can't imagine anything better
      than
building and flying the Aircamper, and you guys (including of the female
type category) are great. I'm gonna keep a toe in the Piet community.
      Thanks
guys. Give me a scream if your interested in the plane 615-754-9159

      Thanks Jack and Dan,

I'd sure warn anyone under similar conditions to pull carb heat, but I just
never thought it could be a problem on take off. You life and learn, and

Here is a link to an Air Accident Investigation Branch Report on an engine failure
I had just after take off in February this year here in UK
I too thought that descent was the real 'catch me' for Carb icing. It isn't as
      you can read.
My engine is a standard Continental A75 in a Corben Junior.

Glad to hear that ultimately, it worked out.- I am curious, how far into
the corn field did the truck need to drive in to get to the plane? Was the
      owner of the field upset?

The reason I ask is because I have thought about those kinds of situations
and wondered how the owners of the fields act... with or without a shotgun
      in hand...

I had a Cessna 120 for about ten years.. the manual actually had you turn the carb
heat on before takeoff and off as you got to full power on the roll.
it had a c90 and it was an ice maker... twice i thought i was going to land prematurely
... once over a plowed field near toledo and another time i was 7000
feet above an airport in indiana.. no fear on that one.
both times with heat and sinking to warmer air things cleared up...
it happens fast when conditions are right
i hope the full time heat on my A works !

      Michael,

I was fortunate in that regard. I actually landed on the turnrow between
two corn fields. Unfortunately there was a sprinkler right down the left
edge of the turnrow, so I had to cheat over to the right and thus snagged
the right wing in the corn. So I backed into the corn, only about 5 rows
deep. The farmer not only didn't shoot me, his family helped me pull the
wings off, get it out of the field, and put it in his barn.

One thing I've found flying across this country, you meet the nicest people
in the world at little airports, and sometimes corn fields. ;o)

| Subject: | Willy Nilly about carb heat |

So glad you're okay Dale. Congratulations on a fantastic job of 'planting'
       (forgive that one, please..)
your plane on that narrow dirt corn path. Wow...that's tight but you did g
      reat.

I used my carb heat cable (okay abused!) control so much in the first 6 yea
rs of flying that it broke one fine day
so I replaced it. (there was a bind somewhere that I worked out and it was
      n't lubed fully)

Being the willy nilly flyer that I am I always leave my carb heat on after
I check in on runup before takeoff. Most times
I'll actually start the takeoff roll with carb heat on and within the first
100 feet I make it cold. Just a precaution almost no
matter what the weather conditions are.

In other news I wonder if anyone has ever put a full-open spring on their t
hrottle arms in case their throttle linkage would
ever fail? I did this on the Corby Starlet I owned because I didn't like
the ball and socket setup that was required with
the linkage geometry. The airflow in the cowling would have pushed the t
hrottle arm to idle should that link have ever busted.

      Just some thoughts.

| Subject: | Anyone in the Omaha area???? |

I may be needing a place to store our 25' RV for a few weeks between the Olympic
Swim trials (June 28/29) in Omaha and....BRODHEAD (July 19-22).....

Wonder if there might be anyone in the general area with some room on their property?
Or maybe know of a (cheap) place I might be able to leave it for a few
      weeks?

      Let me know offlist please.

      Jim in Pryor.....

| Subject: | STATIC THRUST TESTS |

We ran some static thrust tests on my Piet this evening. Now realize these results
are not official as I did not have the OFFICIAL FISH SCALE so we borrowed
one. I did a 1 minute 20 second run at full power(2300 RPM). It stayed over 380#
all the time. 404 was seen several times but 380's most of the time. After
that run let it idle a bit to cool down then checked the thrust at 2000 RPM just
for the curiosity in me. It read 310# to 320#. That was surprising. I figured
      it would be 200-250.
