Actually, "The Original" black & yellow Pietenpol belongs to my friend Jimmy
Dean, and was built in 1932. it is slowly being rebuilt. Here is a picture
of it, taken this past February:

Jimmy brought it to Brodhead at least once, back in 1996, and hopes to get
it up there again in a couple of years.

I will be off work that Thursday and available by cell phone, 630.306.9982. I live
in Morris, IL which is just west of Joliet and just north of Dwight. If any
of you are coming from the east or south and you encounter problems or you just
want to take a break, give me a call.
I will be driving up on Friday morning so worst case scenario you could ride with
me. Need to leave Saturday night for home.
We have an apartment over the garage if you get pinned down in the area either
      going or coming.

Great numbers! The best I've got so far with my Corvair is 280 lbs at 2500 RPM
(WOT) 66x35. Maybe there's something to those certified engines!

We ran some static thrust tests on my Piet this evening. Now realize these results
are not official as I did not have the OFFICIAL FISH SCALE so we borrowed
one. I did a 1 minute 20 second run at full power(2300 RPM). It stayed over 380#
all the time. 404 was seen several times but 380's most of the time. After
that run let it idle a bit to cool down then checked the thrust at 2000 RPM just
for the curiosity in me. It read 310# to 320#. That was surprising. I figured
      it would be 200-250.

Jerry, with that much thrust you will be able to get a takeoff roll of about 25
ft. Gardiner. Also what is the plane your brother has?

I hope to be there. It may be in the RV-4, but at least I'll be around
Pietenpols and Piet People. It sort of depends on what is going on with
building our new home and Bed & Breakfast.

We're applying for the building permit the first week in July and as soon as
it is approved I'll start breaking ground. If that happens to be during
Brodhead, I don't know if I can take the time off (unless Gene Rambo
finished his black and yellow Pietenpol in time for Brodhead. If that
happens, I have sworn to fly my Pietenpol alongside his and I will honor
      that pledge).

First: Dale=2C sorry to hear about the corn field=2C but glad that the airp
lane won and you walked away. Like I said before=2C these old airplanes ju
st seem to change hands and live on forever=2C and I hope that yours does
      =2C too.
On the tire pressure issue=2C the best advice I ever got was from Mike Cuy-
inflate the tires until the tire tread is just visible above the hangar fl
oor when you're looking at the tire from the side. Scout has 6.00x6s on Cl
eveland wheels and brakes (from a Cessna) and it operates just right with t
hat tire pressure. I've measured it a time or two but after getting Mikee'
s advice I don't bother with the gauge. It is WAY less than the 32-35 psi
that others have stated. I can fly it with that much pressure but it seems
to behave like it's had too much coffee... bouncy=2C jittery. Anyway=2C S
cout weighs something like 640 empty=2C so it's a light airplane.
Last bit: Jerry=2C after you're done testing the fuel flow with that gallon
jug=2C save it for Corky. He's saving them up to add buoyancy in the fuse
lage for that loooonnnnggg overwater flight from Louisiana to Belize.

| Subject: | Tomato Bombing in Jacksonville, TX |

      I live for this stuff.

The Jacksonville pilots club puts on a tomato bombing competition at their little
airport in conjunction with the town's annual weekend tomato fest. We had
18 airplanes compete. Matt Wash was my "tomatodier" (bombardier). We didn't
do very well but it sure was fun.

The best part was the trip. I had to travel yesterday to be there in time for
the pilot's brief this morning. Barely made it out of Austin due to concern for
rain, but took off at 1600 and made it to Jacksonville as the sun was hitting
the horizon. Bumpy and crappy at first, and then beautiful for the last hour.
It's a ~220 mile trip one way. There was a 172 doing touch and goes as I
landed. I tied down FBG, was getting ready to find a taxi or call the FBO guy
for a car, and the 172 pulls up and calls me over. He's the organizer of the
tomato drop. He drives me to my hotel and picks me up in the morning. Within
an hour of landing at an almost deserted airport I was eating dinner after
checking into my hotel. Gets no better.

Lots of fun at the fly-in. Food and companionship and so forth.

The trip back was bumpy but good. Landed at home base and went and chatted with
my ATC buddy who was working the tower.

Went over 300 hours on this trip. I'm certainly not competing with anyone, but.....Shad,
I'm comin', and Matt Paxton, I'm increasing my lead:).

Looks real nice. I hope to start and complete my fuse over the winter months.
Do you have your wings finished?
