He was very helpful in all respects. We met at Brodhead in 2006 and 2008 and he was even more congenial and informative in person. The Pietenpol community will miss him. Here is a Roman story you may not know. My friend Tom visited Roman at his home while Roman's Piet build was in early stages. Roman told Tom that he had looked at over twenty houses before buying that one; in each case the first criterion was seeing if a basement window was large enough to pass a finished Piet fuselage. (No, I don't know if his spec. included the turtledeck.) Condolences to his friends and family. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 02:38:34 AM PST US From: "Jack Phillips" Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Hardware Size I used AN3's, with AN 970 washers under the nuts. Douwe ________________________________ Message 11 ____________________________________ Time: 09:55:06 AM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: My first Pietenpol flight From: "scudrun" I flew C-GFQY for the first time last evening. After attending to a few details since I bought her in the spring she was ready to go this weekend. Then it was windy and then it rained, but Sunday about supper time, it promised to be good so I drove out to the field. On top of the elevator in town the national flag was fluttering with about 1/2 enthusiasm from the southwest. I wanted the use the NW-SE runway though for the first flight, since the N-S one has houses at the south end and tall trees and there is a forest at the north end but the other runway has large fields off each end. We decided to sit and wait for the evening lull. During some conversation about my nerves and other things I noticed the flag hanging limp. It was now or never. But on starting the engine I got no oil pressure. Uh oh, was this a sign? My nerves were acting up again. Jim Armstrong came out and offered some advice on getting the pump primed by adding an extra quart of oil and raising the tail while turning the prop. This trick worked like a charm. Drained the excess oil and off I went. I climbed to about 1000 feet and flew around for about half an hour over large expanses of farm land with young crops gradually relaxing and getting the feel of the piet. Then while heading west looking at the sparkle of the lowering sun on Lake Huron I became aware of a significant drift to the North in my track. I turned back to the the field and sure enough the flag was standing out indicating the onshore breeze from the SW had kicked up again. Hmmm. What to do? I decided to do a dry run on the approach so I could see how things might go with a light 90 deg cross on my preferred runway hoping that it was calm close to ground level. With a wing low I had no trouble tracking straight down the runway and sure enough the wind seemed to die off at tree top height and I could have continued on and landed but I don't like to deviate from a plan so I went around and did it again. I carried a little power till just over the threshold! and had a nice smooth landing and roll out. What a charming airplane was the first reaction I had to the question How was it? from the folks gathered at the hangar. And that is just how I felt when I flew her looking over the nose past those eyebrows on the horizon. Charmed. It's just like stepping back in time to an earlier era of aviation to fly one of these isn't it? I look forward to many more. From my experience, the starting drill has been: switch off, fuel on, throttle closed, pull through 4 leisurely blades, then make it hot and it will go. Alternately, do all as above, except when you hear it sucking on the intake stroke, rock the prop back and forth a few times to load the intake until it drips (not my favorite due to fire danger), then make it hot and it will go. Depending on the temperature, you might or might not need to crack the throttle after pulling it through. This has been the drill with NX311GP, another engine that my dad and I built 25 years ago, and as I recall, that was the way Allen Rudolf started N13691. NX311GP has a B carb, the engine from my childhood has an A carb, and Mr Rudolf used a B carb. I would imagine that the Tillotson would be similar. BTW, the B carbs are designed to run with the "Gas Adjusting Valve" (main mixture needle) closed after warm up, but the A carbs usually need to be opened a bit. Since these carbs are now 80 years old, this shouldn't be taken as gospel, but it might be useful as a guideline.
