A couple of us Ohioans are about to build our corvair engine mounts. Are there
any jigs out there that someone would be willing to lend us? Could pick up in
      Brodhead if that works.

      Thanks

      John,

Most generous! I certainly am not picky, and may take you up, but my flight
is not until 7pm. Hope you don't mind if wait to commit, to see if anyone is
      leaving a bit later...

Hello Jack.=C2- Here is the intell. I got from T.B's Firewall Forward, in
       so many words:
      =C2-
Fiberfrax withstands temps. of about 2,300 deg. F.=C2- and may be conside
red as effective a fire barrier as stainless.=C2-=C2- ...it saves 2-3 p
ounds over SS or galvanized sheet normally installed. (page 60)
      =C2-
      The technique for using it:
Attach Fiberfrax to wood or composite firewall, overlay with .016" 2024 T3
to protect it. Although aluminum is deficient when used alone, with Fiberfr
ax it is acceptable. (page 60)
I used .030"=C2-because I had it on hand.
      =C2-
Before firewall is attached on a wood or composite aircraft I recommend the
firewall be protected with asbestos, Zetex or Fiberfrax paper. (page 63)

      =C2-
Page=C2-58 figure1 and page 78=C2-Figure 2 shows Fiberfrax used on wood
       firewalls.
      =C2-
      ACS catalog, page 114:
...Fiberfrax withstands temps. up to 2,300 deg. F. excellent for aircraft f
      irewalls.

      =C2-
The intell. you provided is sound and from the same book. (Pages 56 and 57)
However, if you read further it gets into wood and composite aircraft and
      the above statements.
      =C2-
I do like the quote below from your reply:
      =C2-
"No useful purpose would be served by using a heavier firewall sheet than t
hat required to meet acceptable minimums. Never lose sight of the fact that
the addition of unnecessary weight, no matter how slight, degrades the air
craft=99s performance. The firewall metal for a two-seat aircraft wil
l probably weigh as much as 4-1/2 pounds anyway, so why make it seven?"
      =C2-
I=C2-like SS, but a sheet of it as a firewall seems a bit heavy, expensiv
      e=C2-and unnecessary.

As I understand the firewall is the Fiberfax not the metal thing I put in
front of it to hold it in place?...
If this is the case, we can use just a simple woven wire in front of the
      Fiberfax... can't we?

Just a quick piccie of what to expect when you get to the end of your proje
      ct!
In reality, some arty girlies from a local college had seen me wobbling aro
und and wanted to borrow my "Lovely Little Aeroplane" for a photo shoot.
My calculations show that if I had started building at the age of ten I wou
ld have been in with more of a chance!

Mario, the Fiberfrax is the fire resistive material and it is fragile. You
need a structure to attach it too, (plywood) and some type of protecting ba
rrier to keep it from abrasion. (Aluminum) I would only be guessing what ot
her material could be used as a "cover" for the Fiberfrax.

I neglected to note in which direction the holes on the connecting rod caps
should face while installed on the crank during disassembly. The manual st
ates to have all conn. rod numbers facing up, but depending on which way th
e crank is laying, that would have the oil holes squirting either forward o
r aft.- Should the holes face forward, aft, or does it matter?
