I am shocked to learn that "aviation was once the exclusive domain of military
and commercial pilots" from such an authoritative source and in such a deep and
      authoritative voice.

I also thought that most planes today are carbonfibre or Fibreglass. I thought
that most were aluminum. I guess you could even make one from steel tube and cloth
or "Heaven forbid" Wood and cloth!

I learn new things every day.

      For Oxy/Acetylene... I'm using RG-65 (N0. 32CMS). It is recommended for 4130 and
is much cheaper that what you have found.

Mark, 4130 is best gas or TIG welded with mild steel rod. The additional
thickness of filler makes up the difference in unit strength.
A local welding shop will have 1/16 and 3/32 copper coated rod you need for
8$-$12 per pound. "True Pietenpolers" (those who've flown their airplanes
already) can tell you how few pounds you need for the welding on a Piet.

I was trained to use my oxy torch by some Canadian Recreational Aircraft Association
folks who recommended mild steel welding rod for filler rod with 4130.
My entire control system was welded with mild steel rod from Princess Auto (your
      Harbour Frieght I would guess).

      Mark,

There is an EAA Homebuilder Hints video on this subject and they say that mild
steel welding rod is acceptable for 4130. One of them is the RG-65 that Mark
      Chouinard mentioned.

      Mark,

Thanks for the welcomed distraction from work! Gave me a chance to thumb
thru ALL those receipts..but, anything for you, buddy!

I am looking at a receipt from 2006, from a local welding supply, for 10 lbs
of 3/32" 4130 welding rod.$8.832/lb!!! Curious, I just called them and was
quoted $20.52/lb. I originally bought 10lbs, and have wood gear, and I think
I may have used about 3lbs.

      Thank.you ALL!

Just what I needed. I was hoping to NOT have to buy $65 a pound rods to glue the
      metal together!

So now, on with placing the order for control mechanisms!

      Best to you all!

I will be humiliated to know this has been under my nose all night, but I don't
know what the part the arrow is pointing to on the attached picture is called.
Therefore, I am having a hard time finding it online at ACS...

      And I haven't been drinking.

      Anyone? Anyone? :o

      Thanks folks!

Mark, that looks to be an AN -115 cable shackle. I used them but many people
on here will be able to show you cheaper ways of doing the same thing. The archives
should be full of ideas for alternative shackles.

      Thanks Ryan.

Is there a specific kind of clevis, as I can't find one like it in the ACS Catalog
or online. I see bunches of clevis's but not this style... Looks like a standard
type for cable assembly but it is not listed with other parts called 'clevis'

      Thanks again all.

Thanks Mike. I will have a look for that. Looks like I was replying to Ryan when
      you were replying to me!

Thanks. Not sure what to search for in the archives but I'll try cable shackle
      and see what I find...

Oh yeah....! $10.50 a pop! Woo hoo!

A search of the archives sounds like time well spent to me!

Thanks again Mike. It was indeed what I was looking for. Dunno how I could literally
search so many places and not see them.
