I am shocked to learn that "aviation was once the exclusive domain of military and commercial pilots" from such an authoritative source and in such a deep and authoritative voice. I also thought that most planes today are carbonfibre or Fibreglass. I thought that most were aluminum. I guess you could even make one from steel tube and cloth or "Heaven forbid" Wood and cloth! I learn new things every day. For Oxy/Acetylene... I'm using RG-65 (N0. 32CMS). It is recommended for 4130 and is much cheaper that what you have found. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/mepages/oxweld.php -------- Mark Chouinard Wings, Center Section and Empannage and Fuse framed up - Working on Landing Gear Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=376012#376012

Mark, 4130 is best gas or TIG welded with mild steel rod. The additional thickness of filler makes up the difference in unit strength. A local welding shop will have 1/16 and 3/32 copper coated rod you need for 8$-$12 per pound. "True Pietenpolers" (those who've flown their airplanes already) can tell you how few pounds you need for the welding on a Piet. I was trained to use my oxy torch by some Canadian Recreational Aircraft Association folks who recommended mild steel welding rod for filler rod with 4130. My entire control system was welded with mild steel rod from Princess Auto (your Harbour Frieght I would guess). Mark, Thanks for the welcomed distraction from work! Gave me a chance to thumb thru ALL those receipts..but, anything for you, buddy! I am looking at a receipt from 2006, from a local welding supply, for 10 lbs of 3/32" 4130 welding rod.$8.832/lb!!! Curious, I just called them and was quoted $20.52/lb. I originally bought 10lbs, and have wood gear, and I think I may have used about 3lbs.
