I also thought that most planes today are carbonfibre or Fibreglass. I thought that most were aluminum. I guess you could even make one from steel tube and cloth or "Heaven forbid" Wood and cloth! From: mike Hardaway Mark, 4130 is best gas or TIG welded with mild steel rod. The additional thickness of filler makes up the difference in unit strength. A local welding shop will have 1/16 and 3/32 copper coated rod you need for 8$-$12 per pound. "True Pietenpolers" (those who've flown their airplanes already) can tell you how few pounds you need for the welding on a Piet. I am looking at a receipt from 2006, from a local welding supply, for 10 lbs of 3/32" 4130 welding rod.$8.832/lb!!! Curious, I just called them and was quoted $20.52/lb. I originally bought 10lbs, and have wood gear, and I think I may have used about 3lbs.
