I will be humiliated to know this has been under my nose all night, but I
don't know what the part the arrow is pointing to on the attached picture is
called. Therefore, I am having a hard time finding it online at ACS...
And I haven't been drinking.
Anyone? Anyone? :o
Thanks folks!

RG-60 was recommended to me by 2 AI's who have taught aircraft welding.
Works well with a little practice Copy and paste link below for a good

Mark find some roller chain, borrow a chain breaker and in a few minutes you can
pull enough links apart to connect everything that you will need. I used #50.

Mark,
Actually I found TIG to be much easier. The hand coordination is very simil
ar to gas welding. The advantage is no pre-heating needed, it is quicker, a
nd I believe easier to control the heat. Very clean- no soot/sparks etc. Al
so I can do some aluminum welding with TIG whereas as hard as I tried, I co
uld never gas weld aluminum. The disadvantage is the cost of the equipment
. After you start TIG you would never go back to gas.

I'll second what Dan says about TIG. Also WAY easier for really thin metals, like
a lot of the fittings on the Piet.
Rigbt now, it seems there's lots of TIG welders being sold via ebay, craigslist,
etc, for a really good deal.
Welding stainless is also really easy with TIG.
In all fairness though, gas welding is probably the most versatile. Not easy,
but you can weld aluminum, you can also heat things up to get them apart, braze
and cut steel with it.
Just don't not consider TIG because of it's "complexity". It's quite easy to pick
up I thought.
And by the way, you'll need er70s-2 filler rod for 4130.

Thanks Ryan.
Is there a specific kind of clevis, as I can't find one like it in the ACS
Catalog or online. I see bunches of clevis's but not this style... Looks like a
standard type for cable assembly but it is not listed with other parts called
'clevis'
Thanks again all.

I am just starting mock-up the geometry of the brake pedal and there are

The only other difficulty with TIG (so I've heard and read) is the fact that you'll
need to normalize after welding. I'm not saying that TIG is the wrong way
to go... heck, I'd like to try it sometime... but the heat effected zone is
so small compared to gas that much of the stress is concentrated in a small area,
requiring heat treating or normalizing to reduce or disburse the potential
for damage or failure. This could be as simple as breaking out the ol rosebud
and heating the cluster or part to a dark cherry red and letting it air cool...
but none the less, you are right back to your ol buddy, the oxy/acetylene
torch.
Not an expert, just relaying what I've been told.

Mark,
I took one of those SportAir workshops (TIG welding) sponsored by EAA. Acco
rding to the instructor (he was from Lincoln Welders) and all the written i
nfo that they provided, normalizing is not needed on the thinner metals suc
h as we use on aircraft. I would highly recommend attendance at any of the
Sportair workshops. Went to the fabric covering one also.
BTW I met Gary Bell there for the first time.

I designed my own heel brakes, which are mechanical, but I am sure you could
easily adapt cylinders for hydraulics. There are a few pics on

I know about using string to help seal the case halves of a Continental A-6
5 upon reassembly. My particular manual, (2011) does not mention this strin
g. It merely states to apply a thin coating of sealant to the mating surfac
es.- My concern is that my "thin coating" may squish out when the bolts a
re torqued and end up coming looses inside the engine.
Anyone NOT using the string and if so...any issues without it?

That's the key Mike-a thin coating of Titeseal will do the job. Thick an
d you'll get squeeze out which you don't want
for the reason you cited. The silk thread is an insurance policy to help
prevent oil leaks. I don't know of anyone who hasn't
used the string (in our local area at least) and it is recommended by the b
est-of-the best small Continental engine rebuilders
that I know of personally-Bill Klosz and Don Helmick and by the well-respec
ted Harry Fenton.
I don't know of anyone who hasn't used the string. You can be the first
and tell us if you get oil leaks or not but obviously
it is much easier to install it now than to wish you had it later. Again
, your choice-that's the beauty of homebuilding and
experimental aircraft building in the United States.

Michael,
This weekend I mounted a 5th bearing on my Corvair engine. The directions tell
you to apply enough sealant (Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker) so you squeeze
some out around the assembly, but try to not get any into the engine. A tall
order. I called Permatex tech support and he told me it will simply dissolve
into the oil. Another reason to change your oil often in the beginning.

Went to an antique show there a few years ago.
Just think how good we will look in a tight / loose formation at mach 0.00001 and

Subject: | Re: What welding rod did you use for 4130? |
I work with the guys at EAA's Week's hangar where they do all sorts of welding
on their aircraft with TIG and don't normalize either.
Furthermore, doing a LOT of reading on the matter, the process of normalizing is
rather complicated, requiring close temp control, times and cool down rates
for it to be effective, none which can be done without rather weird equipment
and know how.
Like usual, ask one question from three guys and get a dozen answers! It's the
kind of thing that keeps me awake at nights...
I'm finally firmly in the camp (mostly after having seen it in person a lot) that
TIG is fine, easier for me, no normalizing is required.
With that said, do some reading on the subject of brazing 4130... You'll get twice
the number of theories still! Something like two dozen ideas from three
guys.
Still, an oxy/acet rig is REALLY handy. If you can oxy/acet to aircraft standards,
going TIG later is going to be a piece of cake. I agree the sportair workshops
are great. Dr. Joe (can't remember his last name) who does a lot of teaching
of them is really a good instructor. I've sat through a lot of this lecturing
during Air Venture (Oshkosh). I also have sat through his gas welding
aluminum seminars, which are really really good.
There's a short video of his on oxy/acet and 4130 on the EAA website (or there's
a link). It's short and really really really (that's THREE reallys) a good
place to start. Explains a simple rule of thumb procedure (1/8", 45 degrees and
90 degrees) for oxy/acet of 4130.
This whole welding thing is very cumulative. It's a matter of burning some gas,
rods and metal. Like lead poisoning, your brain just collects the info and
one day it'll seem a lot easier than before, for no good reason.

The research that I've done on TIG welding 4130 indicates that post weld normalizing
is only needed for metal thicknesses over 1/8". Therefore, for the metal
parts on a Pietenpol, very few welds (if any) would require normalizing. Just
be sure to allow the welds to cool slowly, in still air.

Michael I used LOCTITE-515 on my Lycoming. They came out with a service bulletin
that says you can use this as well as General Electric Companys RTV-102. I only
have 3 hours on my O-235 but so far it is dusty dry.

Excellent John!
You know, I knew i had seen other ways of doing the same thing like this photo,
but just could not remember it.
This looks to be an excellent substitute for the $10.50 shackles. unless the whole
thing is $11.00! :o)
Thanks for posting this one!

Thanks Guys.
Lots of very good info here. A bit of history:
I purchased a set of Pober Jr Ace and Corbin Jr Ace plans just prior to settling
in on the Piet. I did this as I thought I would prefer a side by side seating
over the tandem seating in the Piet.
Then, I realized that I didn't understand welding and feel more comfortable with
wood.
I made the right choice, but still am a bit intimidated by the welding, even though
I am pretty good with stuff like this and have welded test stuff in the past
with a friend's coaching.
So, I think the unknown is the worst of this. I will be getting some practice material
to get up to speed, and i spoke to a friend that is a professional welder
last night, and he is up for helping me learn the Oxy set up, and if I buy
a TIG set up, he'll teach me that as well. I think the fear of the unknown is
the worst of my issues.
I will check out the TIG set before making up my mind. I bought the Tim Man's EAA
tapes on how to weld a few years ago, so I am re-watching them to get up to
speed.
Just knowing I have this much support on a question like this is very helpful to
my confidence (and my wife's too, as she has told me she wants to ride in a
SAFE airplane.... after the 40 hours get flown off and she still hasn't needed
to collect the life insurance money! Nice lady!)
Many Thanks!
Mark

The AN111 cable bushings are a better application here than the AN100
thimbles. The AN393 pin will have greater contact surface area. See attached
PDF.

Subject: Pietenpol-List: String Theory (Crankcase)
I know about using string to help seal the case halves of a Continental A-65
upon reassembly. My particular manual, (2011) does not mention this string.
It merely states to apply a thin coating of sealant to the mating surfaces.
My concern is that my "thin coating" may squish out when the bolts are
torqued and end up coming looses inside the engine.
Anyone NOT using the string and if so...any issues without it?

With the discussions of cable making over the past couple of weeks, I
thought I might pass along a tip that was passed along to me by some
of the old timers here at my local airport. Maybe everyone else knows
this tip, but it was news to me.
Attached is a photo of a connector that they recommended for me to use
when fabricating cables. I picked up this connector at Home Depot for
about 3 bucks or so. It works like a charm in sizing and holding
cable lengths with precision. It acts like a third hand, but without
any of the complaining.
Together with the set of cable cutters that I bought at the local
mountain bike repair station for about $20-$25, cable making has
shifted from a dreaded task to something that is simple and easy.
Cheers, Ken
